I am leaving

From: Behind dikes, on seabottom. Netherlands, that is. More exact: Flevoland.

Tomorrow I am going to bring my X1000 to it's new owner. That pretty much means that I am leaving the Amiga-scene.

Over the years I have gotten the feeling that Amiga is not developing fast enough, and not into my direction. I am not a coder, nor a developer. I am just a normal end-user who uses his computer for normal day-to-day work. I no longer can do with an Amiga what I want to or need to do. And having this beautiful machine standing there, doing nothing (apart from the occasional translation) is not a good idea.

I therefor sold it to a true Amigan and he is very happy with it.

My departure is an appeal to all Dutch and Flemish users, because with me the only Dutch translator walks out of the door. I have not (yet) found a new translator.

One of these days I will inform the betatest-team and then, after 30 years, it all comes to an end.

I wish you all well. And I thank you all very much indeed for being a true Amigan.
It's been an immense pleasure, tomorrow will be a sad day.

sincerely,

Johan Banis

@Johan

just because you sold your Amiga, you dont have to leave the community.

OS4 market is in a funny place I feel, on the one hand recently with opengl / graphics work going on and a lot of 3d games being ported it quite nice to see, Hollywood 8 / Designer 5 getting better, finally new beta of Odyssey web browser it feel like things are still getting better and there hope.

But OS4 development news is just none existing, I be kinda of amazed to see OS4.2 come out now, OS4.1 for Tabor/A1222 seem to have gone trough development hell for how long it taken. there seem to be little direction on the OS4 front plus with so much of the addon apps now part of A-eon any way. So the who knows what the future is of this part of the Amiga market.

Away from that however OS3.2 really does sound like the best classic OS update it can be, Vampire has shown how you can push the classic systems to be the best, there are a lot of other nice little project in the community as well for the classic computers.

No need to leave. See you back soon.

There's always a little virtual machine you can use, for your Amiga needs.

Consider looking back at the 68K/Classic community. We may not have all the latest software, but we are very vibrant and active, and we have a ton of fun with our old equipment!

Maybe you don't know no one can leave Amiga because Amiga isn't more a home computer but rather a philosophy. More in general it's a simple and efficient way to do things.
After so many years all this is part of your soul and it can't be separated, even if you want it.

So I'm quite sue you isn't a goodbye but rather a see you later.

Sorry you're going. Thanks for all your translations. I'll have a 'smoke and a pancake' in honour of your contributions!

May we also take the time to reflect on the contributions of the Amsterdam Police!

I can understand users getting frustrated, from users point view, it most be like looking at paint dry, it takes a lot time write good software, this partly fault of lack of good shared libraries. Its also partly because not easy to use for beginners for AmigaOS. With exception of Hollywood.

I hope that with faster 680x0 systems like Vampire and Warp060, there might be more people interesting making good application, also on 680x0 system, not just playing games.

I really hope you change your mind about leaving.

Don't let the silence of the companies and developers backfire on them.
They are just different kind of beast than the normal users are.
They are all working despite some being sad during corona times..

We don't really need a new amiga model every 6 months and an OS update every 4 weeks!

Look, the AmigaOS timeline is consistent:

1985 Workbench 1.0
...Workbench 1.1
1987 Workbench 1.2
1988 Workbench 1.3
waiting 2 years...
1990 AmigaOS 2.0
two more years
1992 AmigaOS 3.0
two more years
1994 AmigaOS 3.1
now 5 years
1999 AmigaOS 3.5
2000 AmigaOS 3.9
now 6 years
AmigaOS 4.0 2006
two more years
AmigaOS 4.1 2008
now 6 years again
AmigaOS 4.1 FE 2014
2018 AmigaOS 3.1.4 (18 years from 3.9!!!)
2019 AmigaOs 3.1.4.1 (only one year, almost record time!! :))
two more weeks
two more weeks
21 times one more week....
...
AmigaOS 4.2 / AmigaOS 3.2!!
... (secret*)
AmigaOS 4.3
AmigaOS 3.3
AmigaOS 4.4
AmigaOS 3.3.5.9.8.8
AmigaOS 3.4
AmigaOS 4.6.6.9.2.0 (aka Réunion)
AmigaOS 4.8
...
AmigaOS 4.9
...
...
AmigaOS 5.0
...
AmigaOS 8 (infinity)

(*It will not take another 30 years!)

You've done well to make it this far. You've fought the good fight, you've finished your race, you've kept the faith. But, I can see, there comes a time when you just need to give it away.

I suppose I haven't expected much from the system other than it already gives me, or I gave up expecting more, when there was no more to come. But I still like to use an AmigaOS system. Linux can be a backup, but on the X1000 it's a pain to maintain, and if you already have it at the touch of a laptop you don't really need it around.

I wish you well in your travels. Hope you consider sticking around for just a chat. And that you read all these messages if you do decide to just leave.

Yeah about the time they was losing it. There is so little difference between 3.0 and 3.1. I would have expected more in two years.

AmigaOS 4.0 2006

Well given 4.0 is built off 3.1 you could say 12 years...

Quote:
2018 AmigaOS 3.1.4 (18 years from 3.9!!!)

Technically, 3.1.4 is built from 3.1, so really 24 years and a pattern emerges...

When it's released by no one!

@Johan

Thanks for selling your X1000 to an amigan & not just the highest bidder

I tried 'leaving' when the upset of Commodore folding was too much to bear and the fact that Apple made it through and we didn't still is a joke in itself BUT after a fee years I regretted selling some of Amiga gear and luckily kept my original A1000 and other bits as I just couldn't sell them for any price and today I have way too much fun with my miggies always messing with Workbenches and fiddling with hardware is a big hobby for me and fun and of course the Amiga community has always been the most helpful and die hard fans of any computer hand down

I guess if you add boing bag updates, and all OS updates for AmigaOS4.x as well, its look a lot more active, not to forget game releases
