This video shows some example program combinations to enable Japanese text display, input and OS localization on the Amiga. It covers WB1.3 to WB3.9

@Spyros
All of the programs are 3rd party? What happened to the "official" C= Japanese support for AmigaOS 3.x that looked nearly complete?

I would expect the x68000 would be the nostalgia/retro computer (NeoGeo for consoles) for 68000 fans in Japan.

Yes, it's all free software.
Regarding the official support by Commodore, I've only heard that it was planned. I don't know if it was it ever completed and released.
Anyway, commercial and free software for this task has been available since the early 90s as far I'm aware.

Localizing Software for Japan
by Darren M. Greenwald

Introduction

Commodore is actively working on a Japanese localized version of the 3.0 Operating System. Keeping in mind this is preliminary information, we plan on having this version of the OS release ready by late spring of 1993, or early summer. In this session we will cover many of the technical issues that you will need to be aware of when localizing software for Japan.

The goal of the Japanese OS release is to provide a release that supports Japanese text output, text entry and storage in third party applications, Intuition objects and Shell windows. Whenever possible, compatibility and consistency with our existing 3.0 release of the Amiga will be maintained.

Some of you will be able to quickly port your software for use in Japan. If your application is already localized using locale.library, it is probable that non-text oriented applications can be used in Japan as-is or with a little modification. Text oriented applications (e.g. a DTP program or word processor) will require a significant rewrite.
---

It looks like the support is based on EUC (with translation from other Japanese codesets), includes self rendering font variants with and without space, includes a new filesystem with better locale support (FFS-INTL?), etc. It looks like extensive and professional Japanese support was planned.

The Japanese support was supposedly shown at a Devcon.

"We showed use of the Japanese fonts at Devcon, and all our Japanese visitors agreed that despite the occasional disk access, our fonts were rendered faster than any other PC they had seen."

Support was working but probably needed more testing and debugging. Full professional support needs extensive changes to the OS without SetFunction() everywhere. Unfortunately, budget problems led to the demise of most development at C= before they declared bankruptcy in 1994.

Thanks for the info. It would have been nice.
Fortunately, Amiga devs came to the rescue, as the available solutions worked quite well.
With Daigokai, which was sold commercially until running out of print, you can write directly on the Shell. For programs where that's not possible you can use the clipboard in a similar way to Kezaco.
The available Japanese Localization works well too.
