@tonyw

The metre is already defined in terms of the speed of light in vacuum (a universal constant) and the second.
The second in turn is defined in terms of the frequency of "light" emitted from a particular transition on caesium (I think) atoms.

Combine the two, and the metre is defined in terms of the wavelength of that particular "light".

So right now the metre is defined in terms which are (a) universal and (b) unrelated to Earth. And are much more well-defined than a electron radius --- which is something which doesn't really exist in the first place.

Not sure how likely it is that New Zealand will drop its quarantine requirements, but if they do, it looks like Trevor will be at AmiWest 2020! From the AmiWest blog:

Quote:
We just received word that A-EON is sponsoring AmiWest 2020! One of our long-term sponsors, A-EON is supporting our show for 2020 at the Gold Level. We hear from Trevor that he will be here in person if travel restrictions are lifted! Thanks again to A-EON for this tremendous support for our Amiga community efforts.

The show is still on for now, so if you're up for a trip out to Sacramento in a couple of months, I hope to see you there!

@eliyahu

I hate to give advice and even moreso hate to offer an interpretation of legal documentation,
however, August 31, 2020 new guidelines were released.
In my "opinion" the only guidelines that matter are those issued by Sacramento County, as they apply specifically to the county in which the show is held.

Sacramento is now in "tier1 (widespread)".

Please read the accompanying .pdf order linked to in the link below in the "latest news" section. My reading of this tells me the county is back to "essential businesses" -only- regarding "indoors" plus a few other categories listed in section 5.

If you read this differently, please let me know.

Perhaps it's not too late to move the event to another city. Or even another state. Somewhere with a low positivity rate.

It seems ppl don't know or forget that a local club puts on the show every yr, its there Oct club meeting basically. Move the show & another group would need to organize everything, not likely to happen.

I knew it was a local club, but I didn't know that it's basically their October meeting. I hope they are able to hold the event, despite the difficult circumstances. Trevor's annual Tabor speech has become a tradition of sorts.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe moving anything would affect the mandatory quarantine for those entering or exiting the United States. That's the problem.

In France, we (Triple A association) have decided to cancel the physical edition (1st time in 20 years) of the MicroAlchimie.

We cannot assume to gather 60 to 80 people in the same room with the actual situation.

We are looking into a way to use our Jitsi servers to hold a sort of virtual MicroAlchimie where everyone could connect in different chatrooms to chat and show their hardware to everyone for example.

I was thinking more of state and county public health orders. But yes, the prohibition on entering the US is a problem as well.

This is our 23rd AmiWest show celebrating 35 years of Amiga! Many creative people have attended AmiWest over these many years of annual gathering. This creativity of the group continues to be a major feature of our show.

Our attendees run the gamut from computer designers and other IT pros to Amiga users who just enjoy the platform. Whether it's game play, productivity elegance, system configurability, or just doing things differently, the people who attend AmiWest are in a very relaxed mood. Indeed, one of our attendees says it's the best annual event on his entire social calendar.

So come to AmiWest and get acquainted with a very creative group of people. Everyone is willing to share their Amiga experience and listen to yours as well. Whomever attends, we extend a relaxed AmiWest welcome to one and all.

So remember: AmiWest 2020 and associated events will be October 24 & 25, 2020 at the Holiday Inn Express, 2224 Auburn Blvd., Sacramento, CA. Make your plans to attend now. If you've attended before, bring one other person who is new to the show. If this will be your first time, welcome to the show! See our website at amiwest.net for the latest information and watch this blog for breaking news about the show. See you in three weeks!

Our venue is equipped with the latest in participant health measures. We do understand that some have concerns about attending an on-site event. Our venue is conducting business daily with all required safety measures in place. We will even be providing a safety measure of our own that only on-site attendees will receive. (More on that later)

So from now on, our blog posts will be identified as "On-Site" and "Online". We hope to avoid confusion with this designation. Hopefully this will help everyone stay informed about both phases of our show this year.
