My treasured friends of Amigaworld,

In reading your highly technical digressions, I have been recently growing more and more curious about what keeps you busy out there, in this cruel real world of ours.

I ask you, then, what is, or was, your profession?

For soon 20 years, I’m one of the system and network administrator of the national research and educational networks here, from arctic to antarctic. At least that’s the papers say. In practice I feel more like a “digital janitor”, tidying up mess others create and leave behind, pragmatically fixing mistakes and errors, keeping the wheels spinning and kogs turning. If you have kids or other relatives in university using a wifi network named eduroam, I was somewhat involved in its infancy as code tester and trouble maker/shooter, and I still have responsibilities on national level. You can throw any operating system at me, but if it’s microsoft owned, I’ll throw it back to you as a hot potato.

My profession? Substitute horror (well, rather a little spook) on a castle in Central Europe (daily shift, nightly shift is in the care of our White Lady).

I guess one way to describe what keeps me busy, is that I am a parallel/serial/token-ring entrepreneur.
I am an angel investor and co-founder of several concurrent businesses: Crystal Delta, Formilab/Semblie, TillBilly, Get Worm.

Most of my attention is at Crystal Delta where I'm managing products for the education industry, and banking & finance industry.

My job is resolving problems people are unaware of, before they even notice.

In other words, I am now an IT technician (VMware infrastructures system administrator) working for a very large company focused into electronic payments market.

Before that, I've been (and I am still, although for passion and not for main job anymore) a journalist, editor and reviewer for gaming and computer magazines from may 1990.

Was working for a while in the technical side of theatre operations (lighting/sound). After dropping out of uni, I took a few bar/retail jobs before taking the plunge into doing my own computer business - custom builds that kinda shit - hey it was the late 90s people loved custom builds! As I was based on an industrial estate I started taking on more business IT jobs and found myself switching from self employed to working for a customer who had a department store and plumbing trade business in the town.

After settling in, I proceeded to get them trading online working with the MD's son and we quite quickly built up the business. Being on here, David Doyle did some design work for us at some point as did Bobson and we got introduced to DaveP and formed a lasting friendship and even went into business doing software for businesses, eCommerce websites and that sort of thing. When that was put out to pasture, years later David and I would be co directors of the online retail business which by this point was now running as a new entity. David has since moved onto bigger and better things but I am still plugging away at it.

Website is Buyaparcel.com - we sell Tools, Plumbing and Garden supplies to all over Europe and worldwide via our eBay store (we also trade on Amazon).

I am retired now, after working almost 40 years in the telecom industry, mostly in data communications. Over the years, I have worked with a wide variety of equipment, technologies and networks. Design, installation, activation, troubleshooting and maintenance. Networks and services for large business customers and government.

When I started, it was 110 BAUD and 300 BAUD.
At the end, I was designing 100 Gbps services.

I was a television news audio engineer, videoeditor then cameraman for 14 years. Then my wife got ill and passed away, now I'm fulltime dad, and work as tech person at the National Videogame Museum in the Netherlands and I repair (classic) arcade machines. Or at least I try to...

@MrFrench

Friend MrFrench,
I believe my profession is already known to the general public:

I am currently retired, endlessly but never aimlessly roaming the sprawling corridors and foyers and archways of my mansion, like a restless specter.

Formerly, I engineered those very platforms that are now bent by wicked land sharks and crooked developers, repeatedly raping their vintage architectures by forceful penetration of "modern" stacks, alleged memory protection, faked SMP and so forth.

I am thoroughly enjoying reading about the lives and times of you all!
Please keep it coming.

Where's for instance, our most treasured friend BigD?
I'd love to know more about what keeps him busy between a morning act of contrition and a night prayer to the almighty.

MEGA RJ
