Resurrecting the A1-SE. It's Alive!

So I've been using a Sam440 and then a Sam460 as my main Amigas for the past 8 years, but have finally got round to dusting off (literally) my original Eyetech AmigaOne SE -yes, the supposedly crappy one.

After a bit of a clean, a change of coin battery and fixing the case power switch, it booted up beautifully. It's clearly an earlier version of OS4.1, but everything seems to be fine considering it's been untouched for several years.

So the big question is what to do with it? I really don't need 3 NG machines, but is there much call for this AGP only, dodgy USB board?

@yoodoo2

I don’t know how possible or useful it might be, but distributed computing experiments, or figuring out how to make VPN tunnel between Amiga computers, lot small project to do with networked Amiga systems.

@yoodoo2

You could try installing AmigaOne Linux on it.

Cool that your SE is up and running!

I saw an AmigaOne Micro go for £455 recently, so there is demand for the old A1's. :)

It would be interesting to see how a recentish Linux fares on the machine. While waiting for OS4 to turn up, a became an avid Linux user (suse 6?) and haven't ever felt the need to use Windows since.

@AmigaOldskooler
Hmm. I might put it up for sale at tend of summer, but I doubt the SE will fetch as much as the MicroA1.

If anyone's interested in acquiring an SE- dm me

It would run slightly slowly. Compared to how a modern PC runs it. But I spent time making the install process as easy as possible. USB install might not be best for the SE given it's track record. But it's real slow to boot anyway.

The µA1 is a good little machine from what I can see. A prelude to the modern Tabor µA1. Except it came out. The SE was a developer machine anyway so not expected to be perfect. It has a bad name but it simply wasn't designed for the public. Unfortunately people sold it to the public. Especially on the second hand market where it was sold as the actual A1 or claimed to be an XE where it clearly is not.

I've been thinking the same what to do with my SE. SE's are a little bit too demanding to make them stable or useful. Trying to use the motherboards network or IDE locks up the machine in seconds. Addon cards are hard to find nowadays which are compatible with AmigaOS. Also you'll have to make your own installer CD because newer drivers doesn't work with it. I think it's best to chop them all with an axe and throw away.

I think it's cool that your SE still works.

A long time ago, I considered purchasing an SE, but my son needed a laptop for school. Eventually, I purchased my MicroA1 near the end of 2004.

I remember when I got mine back in Christmas 2002, and the flames i received when I basically told people how crappy they were. I am glad so many years later people have seen the light.

If you have managed to make yours stable then may as well sell it before it breaks again.

I think some of the A1SEs are better than others. I use mine as my main OS4 development machine, and it rarely gives me trouble.

@ncafferkey

The S in Artica-S has to stand for something, maybe "Sometimes_They_Work", or "SH*T_Don't_Work".

Who knows?

Bill Buck, maybe?

Then again, bPlan used it on the Pegasos 1 (with about the same results).

That's why the Peg2 is still the only early AGP system for AmigaNG that's worth bothering with.
