Which/what web browsers to use on AOS4?

While trying to figure out how to get my SAM440EP to display on the monitor I want it to display the picture at, I am using another one to try to fix some things in place, mainly trying to get Hollywood Designer there.

My first problem is that all the browsers I have in there are old, and they don't seem to work very well.

When I try to go somewhere, It usually complains about SSL, preventing me from getting there.

Therefore my first step would be to hopefully update my web browser no to something that actually lets me go to these downloads pages to get stuff.

Right now it is very difficult, since when I use google to get search results, links don't work.

Another problem was that I was able to download from AOS4 depot Odyssey and Aweb.lha, but neither of them successfully unpacked, as it said they were both corrupt.

So first of all, which browser/browsers should I use?
and second, where can I download it without getting the SSL error thingy with my current browsers.

Well, funnily my thoughts were so stuck on actually downloading new browser with my SAM, that I didn't think the most obvious answer to the problem.

I simply downloaded them with another machine to a USB stick, and now going to transfer them that way.

However, which browser to use is still a valid question. I now downloaded Ibrowse and Odyssey, since they both had updates during this year and even specifically mentioned SSL.

@Bugala

before with sam460ex, i used netsurf for everything, i used its own window so it was super cool.
so i expected my return would be using it like last time.. but, i get ssl warnings from everyone juat mot oddessey..
the last week i have fall in love with oddesey. it works every where, never crashes, no ssl warnings (even when "dont show ssl warning" is disabled. and, it uses mui5 oh man its word diference from last time i used mui based browser.

and it dosent have its own screen, mui provides even cooler own screen util using mui.

youtube works apparently for me. youtube gui is not perfect, but if you just play its fine..

but, if you can live without everything that makes them great.. test ibrowser. very cool gui with links already added.. perfect startup browser. and the speed is insane.. 2-3 faster then the closest one

but full off ssl

@noXLar

Basically my plan is not to use that browser for leisure surfing, so no need for youtube or anything. I am simply needing it to download stuff that I need, and the current old ones that are there don't let me do even that, since when I google something I am looking to download, all the links complain of that SSL.

But these browsers are probably very old since they were installed by previous owner and I already bought this machine years ago from him.

Noticed as example that there is OWB stands for Orygin web browser still instead of the new name.

@Bugala

Over the years, I have installed several web browsers, AWeb, IBrowse, NetSurf, Odyssey Web Browser, Origyn Web Browser (OWB), and TimberWolf.

Origyn Web Browser became my main (goto) web browser.

Now, I use NetSurf or Odyssey Web Browser for web sites which use SSL.

I haven't installed the new version of IBrowse yet. I still have the version distributed with OS4.

OWB became Odyssey, you will find lots of reference to OWB in bookmarks file, font installer script and so on, that where not updated when it changed name. AmigaOS4 version Odyssey also has lots of references to MorphOS all over the place.

@Bugala

Whenever I want to download things quickly from OS4Depot or Aminet for example, IBrowse is great. Starts up right away and as noXLar wrote, it is very fast.

If you haven't done it, you can get the latest IBrowse for AmigaOS 4/PPC from here:

https://www.ibrowse-dev.net/2.5/download.php

And download AmiSSL as well from OS4Depot:

http://os4depot.net/?function=showfile&file=library/misc/amissl.lha

For more advanced usage, Netsurf is good. Don't know how Odyssey performs on SAM440EP.

My browser of choice was NetSurf but in the past year it has been showing too much error output due to unsupported stuff, so I switched to Odyssey beta 7.

No, sorry. I suppose Odyssey is your best bet.

As a side note (off topic in an OS4 context) you might be interested in what's happening in the web browser development field in the Amiga-universe at large? It's all happening on MorphOS today actually, in the shape of the yet to be released web browser "Wayfarer".

It has new groundbreaking stuff under the hood, based on latest code base, efficient and powerful, and supports many of the more difficult online services as of today. Work in progress and no public release as of yet. But if you are interested in what's happening (and with several screenshots from various stages of development, from very early on to current), then please read through this following linked to thread from the beginning:

Not answering any of the questions, but I just can't resist mentioning one of the greatest amiga related slogans ever: "When iBrowse AWeb I use Voyager"!

Thanks for all the replies, sounds like Ibrowse and Odyssey are the way to go.

On Sam440, Netsurf is your best option regarding speed and memory consumption (even if not all sites are supported).

From Sam460/AmigaOne G4/Pegasos G4 and faster hardware, you can go with Odyssey 1.23 r5_beta7

It actually supports more, just is more vocal now about the stuff it doesn't support

You can suppress that output, either redirect it to NIL: or set - I think - log_filter to level:CRITICAL (looks like the default is WARNING|cat:jserrors whatever that means). There is some documentation here: http://git.netsurf-browser.org/netsurf.git/tree/docs/logging.md (the command line stuff should but might not work in the Amiga version - better to set in the Choices file). I've never actually tried to do this, I just ignore the console output!

I use the latest IBrowse for hitting Amiga sites and downloading from OS4 depot and Aminet, because it is fast and does a great job.

Odyssey is a touch slow on my machine, but other than that it does a great job on most other sites. Works on Facebook, gmail, and just about everything. Youtube is a bit much for my setup, though.

Netsurf is fast and enough most of my needs. Rarely I need to start Odyssey. I have Sam 440ep flex.

You're right of course, but it can be done. Posting via Timberwolf 4.0.1 Beta.

I keep it around, but I rarely use it because it hogs too much RAM and croaks on exit.

Update ...

Today, I installed IBrowse 2.5.3 (demo) version to try out. Posting now.

Seems to work fine on Amigaworld.net and some other Amiga sites.

I will continue to use NetSurf or Origyn or Odyssey for Amiga.org forums,
because IBrowse doesn't format the webpage correctly.

Yesterday, I purchased IBrowse 2.5.3 and received my keyfile.

Nicely done, IBrowse 2.5.3 is very fast on Amigaworld.net
