Graphics card for X1000

I’ve got a Radeon HD5450 in my X1000. It works, and can display the resolution I want (3840x2160). But I kind of want to make an update, and it seems a bit sluggish at times (like scrolling in Odyssey) and sometimes after some usage I get some strange corruption.

Will ordinary workbench usage benefit from a newer graphics card, and the Radeon 3.x-drivers (I have 2.x now)?

And what card should I get? I saw the other thread with compatible cards, but none of the cards seems to be for sale anymore. And, yes, I’ve read what chipsets are supported. But when looking at actual cards, I don’t understand which chipset/version/whatnot they have.

For instance, will this RX550 work: https://www.powercolor.com/product?id=1585713590#spe ? Will it fall under “ Support for "R520" (X1300-X1950 series)”?

@jaokim

I've bought XFX Radeon Black Double D R9 280X 3GB DDR5 and installed it on my AmigaOne X1000 - Video

It works fine, but my graphics driver is old, so I wasn't able to use the 4K resolutions.

@drHirudo

That card is like 7 years old!
Is it not possible to buy a new card that works? This is not critique or whining, I’m just wondering. Do they change their graphics card that much, that they’re completely incompatible to the v3 Radeon-drivers?

X1000 is limited to Radeon R7/R9 cards whereas X5000 ca make use of more recent RX Radeon cards.

We are all awaiting a U-Boot update for the X1000 to have support for RX cards (an update which could never happen by the way).

But, honestly, RX 280 is top notch for the X1000.

X1000 uses CFE as it's firmware.

I do have a almost-new Red Sapphire Radeon 7970 if you are interested. I used it for just two days and upgraded my X1000 right away to a R9. I'm keeping it as a spare. But a lower-end card could do.

@Rob

True indeed, I meant CFE not U-Boot which is used by Sam440/460 and X5000.

I upgraded mine to a Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7970 3Gb card a few years ago, and it runs everything just fine. However even though it can run 4K I personally dont as it does slow down some apps and have some issue, 1080p looks great and smooth to me.

And that is one huge graphics card! Thanks for the video!

Is there any noticeable difference to the HD5450 with regards to overall snappiness?

Wow. I didn't know a humble 5450 card could do that. I had a HD5450 and replaced it with an R7 250.

There's some extra support in the v3 driver. Has some faster operations. 64 bit memory support.

Will it fall under ? Support for "R520" (X1300-X1950 series)??

LOL. No. It falls under the "unsupported" RX 520 series from the X1000. Unfortunately the X1000 support ends at the R9 280X. Old but expensive. Unless they are old but cheap now.

I can't comment from experience on what difference you'll see from upgrading but here's the 2D benchmarks for a Radeon HD5450 and a Radeon R9 270X on the X1000.

HD5450

R9 270X

The 270 and 270X cards tend to feature clocks speeds than their 280 counterparts and on Amiga OS4 the 270X cards always have the highest scores in 3D benchmarks which is likely due to Amiga OS4 software not taking advantage of the massively parallel capability of these cards. In light of this I'd probaby recommend a 270X over any 280 or 280X card. Used tested and working 270X cards can be found on Ebay for around £50 + p&p.

I am using HDMI and I didn't notice any difference in refresh/updates. It is either because I use old graphics driver, or because I don't use 3D apps/games yet. For me in daily AmigaOS use the built-in card is better, because it produces less noise and heat.

That is a scary video!

I was afraid you were going to damage your X1000 motherboard while trying to install your new video card only using one hand. Specially when it became apparent that you maybe had never removed and replaced a video card before, since you did not at first realize that you needed to remove a 2nd slot blank cover, to allow you to install the double wide R9 video card. But all turned out well, and it worked on your first boot-up after installation, so my fears were unfounded.

Thanks for your info about what video cards work in the X1000. I'm going to try a Radeon HD 7850 in mine, but it appears that some people have reported that their HD 7850 did not work, according to a list on the AmigaOS4 video card driver author's website.

Your comment about not being able to notice any difference between your original HD 5450, and the newer R9 video card you installed is interesting. It makes me wonder if having these improved video card drivers so that new, or nearly new video cards can be used on the X1000, SAM460 and X5000 AmigaOne computers is that important. Perhaps there are other bottle-necks in the motherboard, or just the OS itself, that make having a new, or newer video card sort of pointless, when the older video cards provide the same perceived performance?

@amigadave

I've been using a 7750 (R7 250) since years now and I never encounter any bottleneck (but the card if far from being used at its full potential since the driver may still be in development hopefully).

Maybe one day, before 2030/2040, we'll see the enhanced driver which will allow us to decode video using our graphic card (I think the driver is already working but as for anything related to AmigaOS 4.1, only betatesters have it and can play with it).

when I changed my HD 6450 for an R7 250X the differencies in performances was huge,
I cannot remember which version the drivers I had at the time.
