Hi there!

O.k., it's been a while since I last posted here as I was merely just a lurker, due to having my X5000 boxed and stored. A lot has happened in the past couple of years. I got pensioned due to reaching the required age of 67 years and 4 months in 2019. Since then I often work 40hrs a week at building sites, weeks on end.
But now, as X-mas is aprproaching (and 'Sinterklaas' has just left the country again), I'm stuck for some time to come at one address and I have some time again to tinker a bit with my toy-of-toys and joy-of-joys.

But hey, it won't boot! Changed battery, reseated the SD-card, shook it, held it upside down, sighed in derision, took swag of 13yrs old GlenCadam and one more just to be sure, but all to no avail. Nothing shows up at the monitor, not in VGA, nor in HDMI.

Am I overlooking something? Any tips?

Thanks in advance,
OldFart

@OldFart

Sadly, you will probably need a serial connection to another machine to get it going, but there are a couple of things you could try "in the dark", so to speak:

Try removing the memory card(s), cleaning the edge connectors with a plastic eraser, brushing out the board connectors with a small stiff brush before replacing the memory DIMM. Use the brush to make sure there is no remaining eraser dust on the connectors before replacement.

Remove any PCI cards and repeat the cleaning procedure. Leave out all cards except the graphics card at first, then replace cards one at a time if it starts up.

Observe the red LEDs when you switch on the machine. If they come on at first, then go out and leave one flashing, then the SD card is not seated properly. Perform the cleaning procedure on that as well.

Good luck!

@OldFart

Try replacing the PSU, they break often.

@OldFart

Did you check your new battery before installing it?
I have had plenty of coin batterys that was already flat even if they never had been used.
I don't know if the X5000 will boot with a flat battery but i do know that it will not boot up with a badly seated sd-card.
If the card was badly seated it would shut down itself within seconds so you can probably concentrate on other stuff.

I would check the graphics card, if it has connectors for PCI-e power cords try to reseat them and maybe reinsert the card also.

If that fails you better get that serial cable...

Yes I did! The meter noted 3.3V, whereas the old one rated only 2.8V.

I am well aware of this unlucky happenstance.

The graphics card is a fairly simple thingy with VGA, HDMI and DVI-D connection. It sports no power connector. (It's this one: https://img.informatique.nl/750/64500103.jpg)

Sigh... I may just dig that one out from somewhere...

Thanks!

It's a 450W semi-modular CoolerMaster affair. I think they're pretty good and expect them to sustain a few years of storage.

Thanks!

@tonyw

Well, that did the trick! I mean taking the videocard out and reinserting it, followed suit with applying the same procedure to the memorystick. Switched the machine back on and lo' and behold! it came back to life. Great!
Now see where I had left my list-with-great-and-irresistable-ideas to work on.

Thanks, mate!

A happy OldFart

@All

And then I encountered a weird phenomenon when opening drawers in textmode: all dates listed as 'future', so changing a sourcefile and then touching 'makefile' off just left me with the curious message of 'Target up to date'.
?
?
?
?

And then it dawned: I had replaced the battery, thereby setting the clock to its default starting point, some 20 years ago...

Problem solved.

And I'm amazed about how quick I adapted back to the Amiga-way of doin' things, after years of Windows and a tiny little bit of Linux on a Pi and my conclusion is simple: the Amiga-way is darn intuitive!

Wanted you all to know.

Have a nice day
OldFart
