I've had my X5000 working great for quite a while now. After being turned off for several weeks it no longer boots anything. It will power up and show the initial X5000 screen, the boing ball will spin and it will then turn to a gray screen and sit. If I do nothing it will reset itself and repeat back to the X5000 logo. I can interrupt the boing ball and get into u-boot and interact just fine. If I load OS4 from u-boot menu It shows "Loading finished ######################### 100%" message comes up after a short time. The next Line reads: "About to call loader entry at 0x7BD02020" at which point it just hangs there.

NO media will boot into OS4. The original CD, my recovery USB stick, or the SSD in it with OD4 installed. The last time I used my system it was fine. I didn't make any changes to it. It's sat and now doesn't work.

The odd thing, if I put in the other GPU I have that supports MorphOS and connect the 2nd SSD I have with a clean install of MorphOS on it, it boots fine into that. SO... This is something OS4 related it seems that came up from nowhere. I now have my system back to stock and am still trying to get it to boot into OS4.

@Acill

What type graphic card do you have?

Hyperion updates do not have RX drivers, they have HD driver, but its only cut down version for booting.

Have you tried booting from a CDROM?

@NutsAboutAmiga

As i mentioned it was working perfectly a couple weeks ago, tried to boot up the day the update 2 came out and it wouldn't.

I have tried all the cards I can. The stock R7 250X it came with is in now, I put in the HD6750 card that boots MorphOS just fine to see if that worked and the Polaris 550 I was using before this all started also isn't working. I know the 550 needs Enhancer, its installed and was working perfectly with the latest drivers before I shut it down last.

Even trying to boot from the OS4.1FE CD and just the 6750 doesn't start the system. It hangs at that gray screen just after the boing ball spins.

USB devices that are not detected or not support can also cause problems, dis connect anything you absolutely do not need to boot the system.

Be as minimalistic as you possibly can, if get the system working, connect one item at time, until system stops booting again.

Next logical step is connecting a RS232 null modem cable, and see what putty says.

There are some uboot variables that can be messed up, there also some IRQ setting in UBOOT, edge trigging or level trigging, fabric reset, or check installation guide from AEON.

There is also few setting for PIO or DMA mode, if system can’t detect hard-drive, its not uncommon for kickstart to hang for a long time.

There is also there are some env variables that defines if a port is CDROM or HD, if you have plugin in and out hd’s, it is possible that the SATA port the HD is plugged into is not configured as HD, it might even be disabled. (Morphos probably do not use this.)

It be also interesting to see uboot variables, so we can compare this with some who as a working system.

Printenv is command list variables.

list can be long, setting console output to rs232 might be good idea.
(check uboot docs use google, or find the uboot guide from AEON.)

I suggest different PSU, and check if everything is plugged in correct like RAM,
there are some tests you run in uboot.

Saw the DDR sticks showing as not the same, which isn't accurate so I replaced them with another set. The original set was in first, then the newer set. Same issue with loading, but they both reported the same. Tried with just one stick and no change.

Yes you have some interesting errors in your log.

Quote:
DDR: failed to read SPD from address 81

Do you have non-SPD memory?

Quote:
SN: 116330024
UID: 4429431001910050e4d4a080a0800000
Errata: ÿÿÿÿÿBGÿ

Errata looks cryptic, should it be this, is this a bug in uboot or hw problem.
is this SN the SN on ram?

Quote:
8 GiB (DDR3, 64-bit, CL=9, ECC off)

Looks like do not have ECC memory, something is not like it should be.

Quote:

PCIe4: disabled

hemm should they be disabled?

Can you do “printenv” from uboot shell, might be some use full info there too.

Yes looks like some thing bad about the ram, maybe wrong type of ram, or a issue that you get because of something else.

If have a different PSU try replacing it, also try different backup battery, odd things happen if PSU or Backup battery is bad.

Way you can boot morphos and not amigaos might be just pure luck.

@Acill

It does not appear to be loading the kickstart modules .
So something maybe messed up with your AmigaOS 4.1 installation .

Also you can't boot a Radeon RX from current AmigaOS 4.1FE CD or the rescue media unless the Radeon RX driver is on those . You could try booting from the AmigaOS4.1 CD with the video card that works for Morphos.

This is what you should see for the loading of the kickstart modules :

@Spectre660

It does do most of that, it shows it reading the modules from the hard drive, and once at 100% it stops.

My RAM installed is the RAM it shipped with from Amiga on the Lake, I also have RAM that I used to rule out the original RAM from the list of approved RAM from them as well installed with no changes.

The video card that's in now is a Radeon 250X that shipped with it. It should be the same as a 7700 I think but I have also tried it with a HD6950, and in the past I have restored my system by booting from the CD and never had an issue. It does the same thing trying to boot from CD, hard drive or USB. It doesn't matter.

@Acill

Disconnect your AmigaOS 4.1 hard drive and try booting with the Radeon R7-250x from the AmigaOS 4.1 CD .

It is possible that a scambled file system on the harddrive is causing the problem at boot time .

@Spectre660

I have done that. I've mentioned that it doesn't matter what I try to boot from, the same result happens. I have the HDD out of the system and no changes.

Its got to be something OS4 related. If I put in a MorphOS HDD with a compatible GPU it boots fine, it boots from the MorphOS install CD fine as well.

For now its packed up. I am tired of it. I may sell it off now.

@Acill

I mentioned battery also over on Amigans. I do not have an X5000, but a few weeks/months ago my X1000 was stuck at the splash screen and the hard drive was not showing up. Changing the 2032 battery on the motherboard for a new one solved the problem.

No idea if that might work, but maybe worth a shot.

EDIT: Now learned that on Amiga.org someone suggested the battery and that you had tried a new one to no avail. Sorry that did not work.

http://lifeofliveforit.blogspot.com/2015/01/amigaos4.html

I wrote something about this in 2015, the information might out of date,
but for slb2 boot to load the modules, it needs to know what is cdrom and what id hd, there
or at least it used to require a uboot variable on AmigaONE-XE/Se called a1ide_conf and a1ide_xfer.
the a1ide_conf defined what connectors on ATA was cdrom, and what was hard drives,
a1ide_xfer defined the speed of ATA if was PIO mode or DMA mode. It can be something similar on X5000.

@NutsAboutAmiga

That changed on the newer versions of u-boot and it shouldn't be required any more.

I am done with this damn thing now. Its packed up and put in the closet. I know it works since MorphOS will install perfectly, and boot. So I plan to just pull out my G5 and use it with MorphOS since its quite a bit faster running it.

How in the hell a machine that worked perfectly and stable the last time it was used, and then a couple of weeks later doesn't is just beyond me. This is just ridiculous. I plan to sell it off here soon I think. I have a trip to Australia to get ready for and will be gone on this job a month, so out of time now.

So once again, by pure magic, it works again. I did nothing other than had it off for a couple of days. I just got my Radeon 5450 in and tried it, booted right up. Put my Polaris 11 card in again, booted right up. I just don't understand this machine sometimes?!

I am not joking, I did nothing other than power it off a couple of days, swap cards (keeping in mind I had been swapping cards before the 5450 came in), and Poof, it works.

@Acill

After booting it up with the 5450, did you save any prefs or make other configuration stuff before switching back to the Polaris card?

Only thing I can think of as explanation.

Or maybe you simply had switched cards a sufficient number of times to clean the contacts in the slot to make good contact again?

[shrug][scratch head]

Anyway, congrats - be sure to enjoy it!

Best regards,

Niels

>> it works again"

Really good to hear that. The fact is worked OK with MorphOS but would not boot AmigaOS 4 from any medium was very strange. Anyway pleased you are up and running again.

Don't know about the X5000 but the general thing I do when systems seems not to start without a clear reason why is unplug it from power (simply pull the plug from the wall socket) then push the power button for 10 to 20 seconds and try again. It saved me quite a lot of times from running for the toolbox and start disassembling.
