Another little update from AmigaOS4 devs, fire up your amiupdates! This time this is C:Date and Prefs/Time which were updated.

Remember, you need previous amiupdate updates to be installed as well, and i.e version.library should be 53.18+ as before.

In C:Date there were removed the obsolete timesync.library RS_ERRSTR tag for the RemoteSync() call and replaced it with the new tags; RS_ERRBUFFER and RS_ERRBUFFERLEN.

For Prefs/Time, were added RS_ERRBUFFER & RS_ERRBUFFERLEN tags to time.c RemoteSync() call and removed the obsolete RS_ERRSTR tag.

The update is necessary to avoid crashes and bad behaviors in those commands.

Thanks to Colin and Simon for!

@Skateman

Should be fixed now according to a post by Rigo over on Amigans.net.

Please try again.

Niels

Rigo? Is that guy still involved in Amiga? Wow! Met Simon at the Big Bash events - true legend.

Looks like another Amigaism to me. Is there ever an OS4 changelog that has some useful info to present to average OS4 users? The changes are only useful to programmers and would be complete gibberish to the average user.

@Hypex

For me your asking for NOT giving changelog looks like another amigaism for me too. More of it looks like facepalm.

If you want only "dumb users specific changes", then skip progammers ones, and keep your self with just "The update is necessary to avoid crashes and bad behaviors in those commands.". That should be enough for you then :)

More of it, i hope there never will anymore those "average users", who dumb enough to understand nothing from changelogs. At least me have no interest in OS4 if i was "average users", for being "average user" there is win10, android and all that shit, where they will leak your ass and wrote you all that buble crap which have no real needs in end.

This specific update is following up on a change to timesync.library which was released earlier.

The problem it solved was that if you couldn't establish a connection to a time server when trying to sync (either using C:Date or Time prefs), you could crash or at least get strange errors.

It should be fairly obvious that when the problem is solved by means of new API/code in the library, the clients using the library also have to be changed to benefit from the change, and this was what was done this time.

So the changes released this time are very much user beneficial, at least for those users who have experienced the problem. There was a thread on the Hyperion forum back when the issue was reported, go find it for more info. (can't look it up right now, sorry).

Best regards,

Niels

No what I'm asking is for it to be understandble by everyone. A lot of people would have entered the Amiga scene because it was fairly easy to use while also giving more direct control to the user. But over time methods that were acceptable in the past due to their technical nature haven't changed much at all. And AmigaOS has a lot of old cruft left in it that frankly makes it hard to use. Perhaps there are only programmers left soon enough because they will be the only ones able to work the system. Take the last major update, that asked you to edit a major system file. Previously a major file was replaced with a new version if it really needed an update, that advanced users could edit again later. It would have been more work programming the installer to ask the user to edit a file than to simply program the installer to replace it. And editing a system file, even when you understand it, doesn't stop mistakes from entering.

Aside from that, I find it both insulting and inaccurate to call people dumb just because they aren't highly technical. A lot of people that aren't technically minded are interested in the Amiga and OS4. You shouldn't need to be a tech head just to use an OS4 machine. But AmigaOne boards and OS4 have confused a lot of Amiga people so they left. Because it didn't act like the Amiga they know. And was just too technical to use.

@nbache

Thanks for the extra info. I actually used Time Prefs recently with a server. I didn't see any crash but had to test a few servers before finding one that would load. Be good to have a default list. I find every time I look for a time server I get all these sites talking about it but no direct result with a simple server. If I could plug in time.com (or time.com.au) in my case and it just worked it would be easier to use.

Why do you continue to state erronous statements...
1) version.library in update 2 is NOT 53.18+ it is 53.17 not some
Beta tester have got 53.18+ in some other private update

Please stop peddling with beta tester upgrade to average Joes
Mark these as beta tester upgrades
Not some kind of enhancer 3.0 upgrade or FE update 3

Wrong.

53.18 is the version installed with updated 2 in its hotfixed state, or when applying the hotfix to the first, non-hotfixed Update 2.

So if you have version.library 53.17, you need to install the hotfix as well. AmiUpdate should offer it to you, or you can get it at the Hyperion site when you log in.

Niels

Thanks. That one works as well. I used the server 0.au.pool.ntp.org listed there as well but info to me looked confusing. I just wanted a basic server like you listed and not choices of servers. Kinda like Marty just wanting a Pepsi. I just wanted a time server.

The only Amiga makes it possible.
And there I have a video for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS9OO0S5w2k

Yes, it's not a server, it's a pool of servers. It's better for load distribution.
