Hello,

I have a plan to do clean installation of AmigaOS 4.1 FE + Update on X5000, then add some parts of Enhancer Software v2.1 as I do not mind overwriting any original system files.

Now I'm using SFS from Enhancer Software, is it worth to switch to NGFS ( I remember there were some issues with Odyssey web browser running from NGFS partition). However maybe things changed with last AmigaOS update?

Thank you

@jabirulo

So some changed from December?

NGFS is not bootable, as far is I know.

I’m thinking this is a mess, we don’t know what works and what does anymore, what is work with AmigaOS4.1 Hyperion installation or AEON Enhancement.

Hi, for bootpartitions you can ALWAYS still rely on FastFileSystem, i.e. FFS/7.
But it may then be very,very wise to keep these partitions clean of 3rd-parties enhancements. Come to think of it, this is always a good practice, no matter what filesystem you use.
For all other purposes you are free to choose from either NGFS or SFS. The choice is fully up to you, but, like others have mentioned already, SFS is not much in development anymore, maybe due to it being thought to be mature, I don't know. NGFS is still actively developed, which means it is not yet 100% stable, reliable or meeting it's full featureset. Again, I don't know. From the two I don't know whether any of them is suitable for booting. NGFS most certainly not an I myself have quite a bit of trouble trying to boot from SFS/2 partitions. Eagerly awaiting my Enhancer packet.

My system (X5k also) recently boots from an FFS-partition and so far it has not given me much headaches. FFS is rather reliable and stable, but contrary to what its name wants to suggest, it is not *THAT* fast, but perfectly suitable for loading and accessing OS-parts.

Thank you for responses.

SFS works without any issues for me, but seems like nobody is updating it. As I remember NGFS was booting fine for me on my two X5000 computers, but later I switched to SFS.

I will try to contact member tonyw for latest NGFS version...

Definitely NGFS. It's the best filesystem ever made for the Amiga, and as others have said, it is still in active development - unlike SFS.

I still use the old SFS for all my main X1000 partitions. I know SFS/2 is more popular but when the choice is between 32-bit with recovery tools and 64-bit with no floor under your feet, I'll go for 32-bit every time.

While I'd like to use NGFS I'd need to install a beta version for my X1000. That's fine for testing. Otherwise I'll just leave my partitions as they are.

@jabirulo

I think people have wrong idea about software development,

I have tee cup it works every day, the tee cup had no system updates in ages, yet it works.

Now imagine I had tee cup with a hole in it, you imagine I try to fix it, with glue or some gum or something. Now if did bad job, I need to fix it again, when hole opens up again.

But cup without hole does not need fixing.

Now your saying there is something wrong with cup without a hole, because no one has fixed it in while, that we should use one with a hole instead because gets fixed more often

Now good excuse for using a new cup, might be the old one made of led, and newer cup is made of lighter material, that is also less poisons, but unless that’s the case. There is no good argument for using the newer one.

I guess because it wouldn't make much sense. First, they already have SFS. Second, NGFS uses (= depends on) the new OS4 DOS vector-port API, so unless they control DOS as well, NGFS would be a risky investment. One clever change in the API and Trevor can spread the filesystem on his morning toast

If they bought ExecSG I suppose they can buy whatever is owned by the developer(s) if Mr Hermans didn’t do voodoo with their contracts.

That would turn out terribly expensive I think. Plus, buying out OS4 components one by one to create a parallel OS is a silly idea.

I just said SFS is OLD (nothing about bugs/known_bugs/...) and isn't beeing updated/developed/fixed. It works OK here too.

I use SFS on my SAM460ex (and as OS4 betatester I use NGFS) and FFS too.

Hi.
iirc ngfs was not updated with the latest os4 update so the version you have is very old and have problems with some certain programs.

I'm a beta tester and have the very latest version and it's great but if you have the version from a few years ago i would use ngfs for my bootpartition and go with sfs for the rest and be prepared to do an upgrade to ngfs in the future :)

The reason to stick with ngfs on the boot partition is that it works great there and if you ever screw up your bootpartition and use sfs on it you can not boot from the os4 installation cd and fix it so you would need to have a special bootmedia with the enhancer sfs version installed and when/if that day comes you would of course have lost your bootmedia with the enhancer sfs version installed :)

Especially when the are already in the process of replacing them one by one by paying someone to rewrite parallel components.

A bit like Workbench really.

A lot of stuff in OS4 is old. It would be nice if it was updated. But I don't expect a fancy new Workbench interface with multitasking coming out soon.

I don't think it's ever had a release for anything other than the X5000.

Pretty sure I've never seen it on my SAM. I used to use JXFS for a bit, then we were told not to use that, and with no alternative (except FFS which is also advised against, but for different reasons) am stuck with SFS.

I suppose it's good that NGFS isn't being released in a buggy data destroying state and then abandoned, but would be nice to actually use it after all this time.

If you have an X5000 then you have a bootable USB stick with SFS/02 capability on it.

@Trixie
Existing situation is also silly and sad, hope X5000 will not end with two separate OS, overwriting system components by ES is bad idea.

@Mobileconnect
Yes, I do have bootable flash with RadeonHD and SFS/02 support.

@smf
I have very early NGFS version this one from original OS 4.1 CD. I tried to contact Tony, but did not get any response from him. Lets hope latest NGFS can be accessible to regular users :)...

Thank you for all responses :)
