Wayfarer, the most feature rich Web Browser that the Amiga has ever seen so far, is apparently closing in on its 3.0 release. It will be based on the current stable WebKitGTK release!

Quote:
Work on Wayfarer 3 is progressing steadily. As with the change from v1 to v2, this implies moving to a more recent WebKit. In this case, this would be the current stable WebKitGTK, meaning the engine would be about half a year newer than in Wayfarer 2. That puts it at September last year for last feature changes from main.

Jumping forward or backward (by mouseclick on timeline) in YT-video does'nt work anymore.......

Some extra detail would be in order here: are you using iOS spoofing or MediaSource playback? Unfortunately I don't really have the time to look into this right now, so it'll likely be addressed in Wayfarer 3, once that's ready.

Version 3 already? And now it's on the Amiga? This is unheard of!

Well, only if you're running MorphOS on it

@Mobileconnect

From one of the jacadcaps summary:

- A very recent WebKit with a standard JS interpreter with several big endian fixes. Compatibility with most websites is pretty good.

You have to solve endian issues with jit or without it.

OK, so I'm writing this using Wayfarer 3... Generally more things work than I've expected. Had to fix pixel format conversions for example, but it seems that most of the JavaScript is fine - Void Linux JS patches are still there and working. I got OffscreenCanvas to work, which I couldn't get working with Wayfarer 2. Surprisingly, Cloudflare browser check appears to pass now (don't hold your breath, they may break it at will). One thing that so far refuses to work is Google Street View (renders all black). Media playback appears to work, and I was indeed able to repro the same issues with seeking in iOS mode as was reported here. Will take a look at that next I suppose...

Wayfarer 3.0, based on the WebKitGTK 2.34.6 is now available for download from wayfarer.icu.

In addition to updating the WebKit core, this version includes the following changes:

- Added a Media menu with playback controls hotkeys
- Added cookie/cache cleaning menu options
- Password save requester pops up on more sites now
- No longer writes partial files into the Curl cache
- Launcher removes PROGDIR:ICU since it is no longer required
- Fixed downloads from itch.io
- Improved network error handling in the media player
- Cleaned up console log output into dprintf
- Fixed the base URL for HLS media chunks (fixes cnn.com, etc)

@Hypex

Going a bit off topic, on version numbers.

When you generate new library skeleton, it typical starts on version 40 on AmigaOS3 and version 50 on AmigaOS4, and that’s even before you starting making changes. Versions are completely made-up numbers, Apple tried to use names of animals, that was not a good idea, but it illustrates the point. Well, it worked, in the sense Apple got some attention, a marketing trick. Better to read change logs, then guess what is done by reading the version number, sometimes large parts of code is replaced without any practically reason beside someone did not like the code, changes like that does not always add to the user experience. I’m sure there is guide lines for versions numbers, but is not always followed.

@NutsAboutAmiga

Version numbers for libraries may be made up, but that doesn't mean they are meaningless. You normally bump the version number when you introduce API changes like new LVOs (calls) and you want apps to be able to demand that version (or newer) at OpenLibrary time.

In case of Wayfarer, a version bump happens whenever I update to a more recent WebKit.

@amigang

You can see the endian patches in the Void linux diffs here. They are a result of my collaboration with the Void package maintainer.

Btw some of the BE patches have made it into the WebKit repository already.

@t0lkien

This version is pretty powerful. The only limit is lack of cpu grunt.
This on an x64 would be awsome.

@Zylesea

Or some kind of JIT on PowerPC could do the trick.

Wayfarer 3.3 is now available!

- HTTP HEAD requests to resources would poison the Curl disk cache with 0-byte files, leading to websites failing to load/work correctly
- Minor speed improvements in JavaScriptCore and timing code
- Improved refresh speeds when typing text on websites showing animated contents as you type
- The HLS player will iterate through all streams of the master playlist now if a selected sub playlist fails to play
- Re-worked post-seeking playback restart to avoid auto-start of streams that start playback from non-0 position
- Fixed audio buffer under-run handling
- Invisible video streams fixed not to enable overlay
- Improved invalid certificate error handling UI flows
- Disabled touch events support

Big thanks to Michael Rupp of taws.ch for helping me getting TAWS to work in Wayfarer.
