| 2006 was a productive time for Amiga OS4. The AmigaOne had been established as the Amiga OS4 platform of choice. OS4 was maturing. And we saw lots of ports and other software being produced.
It was also a year we saw lots of port OS4 to x86 threads. So much talk about OS4 on x86. It became: 2006. The year of the x86!
So, since it's been a while, is it time for another port AmigaOS 4 to x86 thread? |

| Forget it. You can't preview a poll or edit one. And it's all messed up. |

Yeah, Amigaworld polls are like that. But it's still illuminating: results are all over the place; i.e. there's no consensus.
BTW, when I first read this I thought you meant OS threads.

Implementing at a bare minimum a timer driven interrupt would allow a simplistic kernel to be written for it, but there's no point. If would be simpler to use the host to expose threads to the interpreter and that in turn would allow for the interpreted code to scale horizontally. One change I would need to make if I was interested in doing that would be to make the interpreter state (which is currently singular) into instance data. This creates one layer of indirection so that each thread has it's own overall register/stack state. It would in all probability also mean I can no longer use a fixed register allocation for the VM's program counter, which would cost some performance.
None of which would matter if it was a JIT. _________________ Doing stupid things for fun... |

It's telling that as many people want it porting to pancakes for eating as want it to remain PPC forever. _________________ Doing stupid things for fun... |

I did a preview but should have pressed post. I ended up with a deleted poll. And when I tried again I ended up posting twice with one having a corrupted version of the poll.

LOL. It had come to mind. I was thinking of making an option about threads. |

That's interesting. I kinda twisted the pancakes on the bottom by adopting it to my theme. MJ pop corn on Facebook watchers, eating pancakes while browsing AW.net. |

Port it back to 680x0! And then run it in Amithlon or UAE or run it on Vampires if they're fast enough! |

Agreed. As much as I enjoyed the ride, PPC is over. There are already many more capable operating systems available for x64. We have a resurgent interest in 68K and we have mature emulation for it too. Why be obsolete on expensive niche hardware that will become irreplaceable when you can be gloriously obsolete on hardware you can buy anywhere (aside from global chip shortages lol)

It seems to be the consensus to run in some kind of VM. I tend to think native or bust. Other ideas like sit it on top of Linux or turn it into a Window skin don't really work for me. But that's what happened to the Mac which was in a similar position. They ended abandoning both the OS and hardware in the end. While Windows is still Windows and still running on the same updated ISA. |

There is no need for a port, you can play different flavors of AmigaOS on x86!
1. Amiga OS4 on UAE 2. Amiga OS3 on UAE 3. AROS without UAE.
There is no need for another port. |

| AROS isn't AmigaOS. Or AmigaOS 4 in this case. But the point is to ask about making a thread about the subject, not to discuss the subject. |
