OS4/Win10: File sharing via network

Is there any easy way, how to setup file sharing between OS4 computer and Win10 PC? I mean mount some shared Win10 directory in WB and copy files between both machines. Now, I´m using 8 GB FAT32 USB flashdisk, but that seems to be somewhat old fashioned (floppy disk style ).

My setup:
Win10 side: laptop connected to interent via WiFi
OS4 side: Pegasos 2 connected to internet via LAN cable connected to AccessPoint (cheap router) and then to the same WiFi network as the above mentioned laptop

Thanks for help!

@pavlor

Of course you can. With either Samba or ftp. Personally, I think Samba is the way to go. Faster and more straight-forward.

SMBFS is the way to go. No need to install full Samba (bloat), but you can mount Win10 shares.

Here are few tips to set Win10 options to be more compatible with older protocols our SMBFS versions use.

Thanks for all advices/tips

I tried SMBFS and Smbmounter from OS4depot, but I was not able to mount my PC drive/share. Both computers (Win10 and OS4 use DHCP to connect to internet) - could this be an issue?

Win10 has enabled SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support (per guide in jPV's link).
A directory in Win10 is set to share (and visible under Networks).

Buy a SMB 1.0 capable NAS Server. That`s how I managed to use Shares in AROS!

But to access the NAS Server from all Windows Computers then all Computers in the Windows Network must be set to SMB 1.0!

One Problem.. Linux does not support SMB 1.0 by default anymore!

One Problem then in my Expirence is the Windows Side Network works then somehow as it likes! lol

The trouble with samba, SMBFS, etc., is one of the reasons why I wrote ZitaFTP Server. I currently use ZitaFTP on my AmigaOS machines, and FileZilla on the PC. Others have fancier FTP clients, including ones that mount FTP as a drive.

EDIT: I also use CURL in my makefile scripts, so I can cross-compile on my laptop and copy it straight across to an Amiga for testing.

Doing things the other way round is a bit more difficult. ZitaFTP runs on Windows, and RNOXfer worked when it was first released. However, it failed last time I tried it. Possibly an AmiSSL update killed it. I am planning to write an FTP client as companion to ZitaFTP, but haven't started yet.

There are several “native” amiga filesystem sharing protocols for Amiga, like AmigaNetFS and Envoy. Sadly, the owners of these have all decided to keep them closed source, so one cannot just build a file server for Linux or Windows. Instead years and years has been spent tinkering with smbfs, to the point that it is no longer relevant, since the protocol it supports is no longer supported on relevant operating systems. This is what makes Amiga such a great platform…

Yeah, I will postpone this task until I change some router prefs (I guess my issue is DHCP). Networks are always some kind of magic for me.

@tekmage

Sounds good!

@pavlor

It should be ok to have DHCP on. I know static is usually recommended. But if you can assign a hostname to MAC that can make it easier. You can also assign MAC to IP so your machines have a set static address but still use DHCP. Roadshow has some hostname settings for assigning names. But I would prefer the router to sort it out so any machine can be called by name. Having said that I don't have much of a network setup. I tend to use FTP if not USB. Then for small things email myself. But that SimpleTransfer sounds good,

@Hypex

I was camping when I posted that :)

I stumbled across simple transfer a few months ago. I use it for OS 4 to OS 4 xfers but it supports Windows and is very easy to use. It's not perfect but works well.

Personally, I use zitaftp to move files between my x5k and PC. While it's fast it is not cheap.

Cheers,

I've used Claunto's Amiga Explorer for many years to transfer files via LAN between OS4 and Windows 7 & 10. It works great.
You can get it Here!

Oh, I'll have to try to test it a bit then... should both OS4 and Windows versions work (bug) in the same way? Do you know if I can run the OS4 version under WinUAE and to get the ports open/forwarded to the world?

Friend ktadd,
you just unwillingly coined the best new moniker for that tragic carousel of buffoons:

Yes, RNOXfer has the same problem with both the OS4 & Windows versions.

Theoretically, ZitaFTP should work on WinUAE, but I've never tried it. It makes much more sense to run the native Windows version. I assume that RNOXfer works on WinUAE too.

Thanks for the reminder about IP addresses changing. I plan to add server discovery to the future FTP client, so you won't need static addresses, or even need to know the IP address.

That task would be a easier if someone ported Bonjour to AmigaOS.

For anyone interested, I solved this small problem. There was a bad configuration on the Win10 side and some weird incompatibility of the GUI I used over SMBFS on the OS4 side. Now I'm mounting smbfs from CLI and all works as it should (I copied few files between both machines without any issue).

Some of this filesystem has critical issue, where network is halted, or some connection issue, complete workbench can be frozen, this why I don’t use this, filesharing filesystems like smbfs and ftpfs.

It be nice they changed that, so list files and did not require network, if was multi thread, and with cache system that be cool.

It seems like every version of Windows has more security features. I've battled with Windows 10 security before and lost. Sometime I may try it again. Instead of battling with Windows security, I like to go back to an earlier version of Windows, XP, which had only rudimentary security. Luckily older computers are more compatible with XP. I got an old laptop from a thrift store and installed XP. Then it is much simpler to network with Amiga OS 4.X. This probably doesn't help you with Win 10. I'm just saying maybe try something else.

In fact, when Windows went from XP to Windows 7, a lot of older software broke. I don't know why, I'm just a Windows user. I don't want to worry about what's going on inside. So it's a good idea to keep XP around anyway.
