Emulating an Amiga CD32 with AmigaForever (KXLight)

On a 2006 IBM Thinkpad laptop with a 20GB harddrive, Pentium 4 - 1.6 GHz, 2MB RAM, DVD and CD players. Also has a docking station for external keyboard, mouse, and monitor.

After installing Amiga Forever, I replaced the "hd_boot.uaerc" file which was installed automatically with the "CD32_31.uaerc" file from the installation DVD. The uearc needs to be renamed hd_boot.uaerc to work.

Then I modified the following lines as indicated:

unix.rom_path=/Amiga/rom

kickstart_rom_file=$(FILE_PATH)/amiga-os-310-cd32.rom
kickstart_key_file=$(FILE_PATH)/rom.key
kickstart_ext_rom_file=$(FILE_PATH)/amiga-os-310-cd32-ext.rom

chipmem_size=4
fastmem_size=8

cpu_type=68040

cpu_speed=max
cachesize=8192

kbd_lang=us
joyport0=mouse
joyport1=joy0

scsi=true
scsi_device=/dev/cdrom

It works pretty well with a joypad.

@Nonefornow: how fluid is it? Because I've a very old IBM ThinkPad R40, whose specs look like your one (I don't recall now if it has 512MB or 1GB memory).

@cdimauro

The video graphics look pretty smooth to me. Of course, it is emulating a 68040 with 8MB of fast ram.

I tested it with Doom and I did not notice any frame-skipping.

But reading the CD though it's very slow. The game does pause briefly when accessing the drive.

Also, unfortunately, I do not have a real CD32 to compare with.

@Nonefornow: maybe you can try making an image out of the CD, and use some software to mount it.

I see that you're using Linux. Which UAE version is using Amiga Forever there?

BTW, what's your ThinkPad model? I don't think that it has only 2MB of memory.

Just to try out, I downloaded few CD32 ISOs from the internet and burned them on CDs.

Amiga Forever uses Knoppix Light version 8.1 which boots E-UAE. I believe E-UAE is version 0.8.29WIP4. https://www.amigaforever.com/kxlight/

BTW I am using Amiga Forever 7 - so possibly does not contain the most updated E-UAE version.

It's an IBM Thinkpad A31. And yes you are right it's 2 GB.

@Nonefornow: 2GB is a lot of memory. You can emulate several retro platforms.

The only concern is about UAE: it's really too old. Many games (and demos) work, but it hasn't all compatibility fixes that WinUAE got over the years...

@Nonefornow

Are you sure this post belongs here on aw.net?
At time of writing there's not a single other thread on the front page that is approaching "normal".
This thread seems a mismatch. It's rational, and Amiga related.

@fishy_fis

Let me correct this in MEGA_ZORRAM_RJ_VIOLENT_KEN_FRANKO's absence:

Hypothetical Quote from a fake human screaming out for relevance:

Dear friend who I consider beneath me,

Emulation is class but it doesn't reach critical mass!!

The black hole of despair will engulf us all because the rich philanthropist / god-like emperor Trevor did not choose the correct ISA....ZZZOOOOORRRRRAAAMMM!

It's quite easy really! Maybe Franko is just a state of mind!

@cdimauro

Well yes. The Amiga Forever DVD already contains these pre-set configuration files - ".uaerc".

A500 + 2MB RAM (1.3 ROM, 68000, OCS)
A1200 + 8MB RAM (3.1 ROM, 68020, AGA)
A4000 (3.X ROM. 68020, JIT, TCP/IP, 10MB FAT Agnus OCS)
CDTV (1.3+CDTV ROMs, 68000, ECS, 1MB Chip, no floppy)
CD32 (CD32 ROMs, 68EC020, AGA, 2MB chip, no floppy)
AXXXX - general non specific machine

All those can be modified as needed.

I thought that if I were to take this laptop to CLASS (https://portcommodore.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=class:start), it would be interesting to have it emulating the CD32 with some CDs for people to try out and have fun with it.

I understand WinUAE is a much more mature product, but for the purpose I think this is OK.

And on that subject - and I posted this on another thread - I really wish Michele would try to improve E-UAE. I think it has potential to be a very good emulator if / when used under Linux.

@Nonefornow: the problem with E-UAE is that it should be rebased / synchronized with WinUAE, and that's a difficult task.

AROS has the same problem with Janus, AFAIR.
