How realistic would it be to update the Amithlon kernels to support "modern" hardware?

It would be awesome indeed, if possible

I'd happily fund such a project.

@racer_hex

My understanding is that based on previous updates - not easy at all. Of course it could be done, but it would require a very knowledgable and dedicated programmer who knows linux kernel inside and out, and the amiga-side inside and out.

Probably better to go down the PiStorm/Emu68 route.

@Bosanac

How will this be better than AROS/Amiberry etc? Flogging a very dead horse much?!

@BigD

You genuinely don’t know why Amithlon is better than any of the other choices?

There was a huge thread on it recently.

@Bosanac

Well it is H&P abandonware so I guess it is suggested this be reverse engineered or is there an Olaf type guardian of the codebase for Amithlon like Olaf was for 3.1 sources?

To answer your question; no, I guess the fun of THEA500 Mini swamped any interest I had decades ago for a system I bypassed to buy 'real' 68k AmigaOS 3.5 and 3.9! Seriously? What is fun about buying a PC to run Amiga software! It is barely any fun to buy a PC to run MacOS! Why not buy a fun Amiga to run Amiga stuff?

Tell us you have absolutely no idea about Amithlon without telling us you have absolutely no idea about Amithlon.

Every single thing you've said in your responses here is facepalm worthy.

@Thread

So glad the inclusive spirit of the Amiga community is live and well! I am still allowed to post even if I'm not a fully signed up Amithlon fanboy! You expect me to know all about it already when this thread is about funding yet another Amiga fork that presumably needs support from people on the fence like me! In my view it's not even clear that we can sustain 68k never mind PPC and then this non-custom chip x86 OS3.9 distro (sounds like CoffinOS but without the hardware 68k compatibility emulation and the SAGA custom chip reimplementation when you say it out loud).

Here's an opinion then: the narrow little niche of Amithlon fanboys that think it still is the future despite being dead for two decades would not be able to support further development all on their own. However, since we expect everyone to work for free in their spare time then yes please would someone other than me bring this up to date (despite the majority likely ignoring it like the first time it was released however briefly).

Is that the acceptable position you were after or is it just a case of, "get lost unless you understand the inner workings of this pinnacle of Amiga achievement?"

Yeah, I know the existing kernel 3&4 sources are out there I was just curious how hard it would be to bring kernel 4 forward. From your reply it sounds like there's a LOT of domain knowledge baked into those kernel sources.

@BigD

I don't think kernel 4 is dead for two decades, maybe a decade now. But in theory an updated kernel could make Amiga installable on newish hardware. For those not concerned with gaming it seems like a decent alternative.

@racer_hex

Using GraFX2 on the PC/Mac rather than Deluxe Paint isn't such a chore and for most things there is now AMiniMiga on THEA500 Mini. I just think using a PC to be an Amiga cheapens and dulls the experience personally and I actually like Windows 7 at least.

What I would use would be a Rabbit Hole enabled system with invisible Linux/Amiga interoperability! I don't think we need further Amithlon development for that do we?

Why would anyone create such a thing?

Because they can.

The Linux Kernel is GPL2.0.

Why would any of us that are capable of doing this ask for money?

We are all highly paid professionals who do these kind of projects for fun. I doubt the “Amiga Community” could raise enough to cover what we earn in a week.

Oooòo hark at you Missus! "You couldn't afford me anyway Mere mortals, I'm a coding god and nothing less ahahahaaaaaal!" Is what I take from your comment!

Well as long as you're having fun coding and meddling who really cares what it's for or if it is likely to prove useful to anyone other than you I guess! Have fun coding gods!

@Bosanac

Hard to say without knowing what is coming out the other side, but lets say $100k AUD.

The more important question for me is: What will it take to get it done?
- MVP/MMP
- Retail facsimile of Amithlon
- Retail + AGA emulation
- Retail + SDK

And you’re already creeping out of scope.
