@QBit

Is this better than the Van Helsing project?

@DiscreetFX

Damn, you beat me to it!

"Has she finally slayed all the high-school Vampires?"

...and such!

Seriously though what's a Buffee? A new car waxing gadget?
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"

So it's been about a year since an update on Buffee. It was/? is a very nice project, in several ways (be a real shame if it goes nowhere). Anyone know if there's any progress at all?

@Tpod

Everyone involved is undoubtedly nervous about the products relevance post-PiStorm IMHO.

@BigD

Well it's offering something different from either the PiStorm or V4 so I hope not. I really like the idea of drop-in replacements (& upgrades) for individual chips e.g Willoe (Agnus). Its a very flexible approach, particularly nice if you already have (or want to get) some more old school upgrades & combine with some Buffee options.

anything that relays on 30 year old hardware is not for me, I love v4sa, all new and wont die because fat old Agnus just cant do it anymore, and same can be said for all the parts really.And has new chipset so its more then just an accelerator. For the cost of an ethernet card, video card, ram, hard drive of some type, and then fixing the failing hardware, I found the v4sa is a steel. Saves me tine and gives me peace of mind that I dont have to worry if tomorrow my computer will not turn on.

@roar

Well I'd probably go for a V4SA myself if I didn't already have several Amigas (or if they were glitchy). Its obviously all a matter of taste & cost combined with practicalities.

@Tpod

i spent so much time I mean months and months messing with so many issues, 2 a3000s wont boot, 1200 grey is a blue when playing games on my 1200, and my 500 wont boot now, i was screaming on a daily bases , getting upgrades like pistorm for 500 and 1200, and i always had to wiggle the pi to get it to boot half the time, just so many things sucked and v4sa just resolved all the issues. I wish i could get my old hardware fixed but its going to cost so much money if i can find anyone do fix it in the first place, and then gota cross my fingers nothing else goes wrong. I am in amiga heaven now and with the excitement of new stuff coming out using the maggie 3d cihp in the vampire. too tell you the truth i didntt realize it had the 3d chip and a lot of the cool new stuff like 16 channel audio , i just wanted to use my old amiga games and have a nice fast workbench on real hardware. Now all the games I want play run great and cannot wait for the robin hood to get ported, the preview is awesome. they are using the magie chip so like in great amiga style, using custom chips to run fast graphics on a slow cpu then required on pcs or macs.my end result is im a happy amiga user again, and not an angry retro hardware collector dealing with consent breakdowns.

I'm sorry you've had such problems. These machines are old and have been kept in a range of different environments. I'm lucky in that my second hand machines have only one previous owner and recapping has proved successful. Once the accelerator cards begin to fail then PiStorm/Vampire/Buffee/TF and Warp cards will be our only retro hardware options. In my view we are well covered with Vampire SA/MiSTer/UnAmiga/Minimig/THA500 Mini and A600GS to future proof this hobby. There's even reverse engineered motherboards but we'll run out of CSG/MOS chips eventually!

@ppcamiga1

If you are lucky enough to know how to fix old hardware, then good for you. I wish I could but just cannot do it. Im sure I am in the majority, I dont enjoy fixing old hardware, just using it. if you are in the situation that you can fix old hardware then keep using old hardware. You still wont get the new chipset from the v4sa. games are coming out that will require them like the new robin hood conversion. so it will be like when I had ecs and aga games were coming out.

Well its pretty reliable now, but my Frankenstein 1200T was a total nightmare to set up so I can relate to some degree. I haven't installed OS3.2 on it yet partly due not wanting to go through any more hassle (although it should be a lot less problematic as no physically cobbling the hardware together involved etc.).

The more Amigas you have the more potential issues & time spent updating etc. I certainly wouldn't want to take on another one … although thinking about it I'm sure I wouldn't turn down a nice 3000 or 4000 if it was offered free to a good home (no fear of that ever happening)!

@Tpod

ECS Denise's prices are getting crazy. ECS Denise is important for improving Paula's audio when there's a very fast 68K CPU and RTG.

@Hammer

Your certainly right about the average ECS Denise prices, although thankfully you can still find some that are more reasonable. This week I brought one for my only non ECS A500 board (got to get around to doing the 1mb chip, board mod, simple but Rev 5 so a little more to do). News to me about the OCS audio issue. I was going to wait for the Buffee version (Faith) but just in case that never happens I thought I'd get one before prices get more .

@roar

There's plenty I like about the V4 & there's a fair chance I'll buy a FireBird at some point but I'm enjoying my A2000 at the mo; I've finally, in every way perfected my setup & it only took me 30 years (certainly wouldn't be everyone's ideal A2000 set up, but it is for me).

Sounds like your as big a fan of the StandAlone as I am of OS3.2! I don't even like using OS3.1 now, there's just so many improvements you get with 3.2 (but you get to keep the 3.1 feel). The fact that it will work fine on a 2MB 68000 Amiga or a V4 is just one of the more major reasons I love it.
