Greg Nacu has released C64OS v1.0, his new, text-based operating system for the Commodore 64 with the minimum requirements of a SD2IEC card drive and joystick/mouse.

https://c64os.com/

You can use its full-featured File Manager or go into the App Launcher. Over 25 utilities are available! For more information on getting started with C64OS, see

https://c64os.com/c64os/gettingstarted/#requirements

You can purchase C64OS in two different packages (bundles). The starter bundle at $59 Canadian (not including postage and any taxes) or the standard bundle at $64 Canadian (not including postage and any taxes). See

https://c64os.com/c64os/#order

Whether you buy the starter bundle or the standard bundle, you get the pre-installed C64OS on a SD card and a very well-done, printed User's Guide Supplement, among other items.

For an up-to-date, comprehensive review of C64OS v1.0, go to Perifractic's Youtube video at

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVeW2ZlV2WU

Ooo, an optional Star Trek theme in C64OS !

@RobertB

Nice.

I just started writing a 6502 emulator because I was bored, so this'll do nicely for testing it at some point.

Once the CPU emulator is finished, i'll be emulating the Plus/4 first as it was my first ever computer but I plan on trying my hand at the C64 at some point too.

@RobertB

This is pretty awesome stuff. I really like how he went the extra mile and made a nice printed manual and put labels on the SDCARD.
Everything just screams enthusiasm and quality about this project.

That's it! I was looking for a word to describe it, and the word is "quality."

C64 OS v1.03 has been released and now has support for the scroll wheel on a mouse connected through a MicroMys/MouSTer and support for mounting .D64, .D71, and .D81 files. You can update the earlier version(s) of the OS by going to the download page at

https://c64os.com/c64os/softwareupdates/

Note: To update v1.0 to the latest update, you must first run the v1.01 update, then run the v1.02 update, and then run the last update.

@2iceaday

Of course, your joking, but let’s expand on your absurd idea.

The graphic on C64 is symbol/glyph based, at least some of modes, unless you plugged the PowerPC into C64 you won’t have that type of graphics. ARM based products do that already at lower price.

in case you don’t plug it into a C64, you need to emulate it, simulate it, or build new motherboard, and use old chips. It is too expensive, or stupid, who would buy it. What would be the appeal?

Yeah, it's pretty absurd to make a new OS for such an old computer anyway, certainly I wouldn't have any nostalgic feeling about it. And never used it, and I don't really have a C64 anyway, but at least installing an OS that’s free, costs me nothing.

The 6502 CPU is LE CPU, the PowerPC is BE based CPU, it’s not an ideal CPU for this, but it doesn't matter, only the program counter is 16 bit, all other registers are 8 bit, those old CPUs are so primitive there's hardly any byte swapping to worry about. Any modern CPU with emulates an old primitive CPUs equally good because of this.

Compared to the 68,000 range of Motorola CPU’s, the MC68000 is has 32bit registers, it's a BE CPU, and this why for MC68000 another BE CPU is ideal, PowerPC makes sense here, from technical point of view, this are more similar. sure, maybe not price point of view. But that has nothing to do with any of this. Sure ARM CPU looks more attractive now, back when we started with PowerPC, ARM was only used in slow mobile phones. Amiga community got screwed, by the marked/Apple.

There was talk about porting MorphOS to ARM, Bill Buck wanted it on Elfika II (ARM), I remember, MorphOS team instead decided to go full in on old PowerPC G5/G4 macs.

Switching CPU architecture is not a simple easy thing to do, while you can get that impression, with emulation solutions, that exists. Emulation is slow, and at some point, you want to remove the overhead of the emulation. But you want to have some kind support for old software, or else you end up as new OS without software. In that case you have no users.

I don't think this is C64 community, understand the Amiga community.
why would we need all the CPU power, Oh well compared to the C64, there is a lot of productivity software on amiga, like video players and ray tracing software, there are advanced 3D games. All of those would benefit from a faster CPU, this is 64 on the other hand, doesn't have software like that.

I think also the other, thing that's thrown at a Amiga community is why don’t you stick with the old classic amiga, I think there is a misconception, it's like telling people why don't you use some old Macintosh MacOS 7, instead of MacOS9 (or MacOSX on modern computer), yeh you can, but a lot things has improved.

@NutsAboutAmiga

PowerPC isn’t big-endian, it is bi-endian.

Well....

A proper bi-endian CPU, should have this problem.

I tell you its a major disappointing hand coding assembler and find out it gave no advantage over normal shift + or routines.

waste of time. 8 bit computers should stay as they are.

@ppcamiga1

Hardly a waste of time. There is still a very active retro scene for most old computers as well as new software and hardware being written for them all the time - usually in assembly language.

I have found myself spending more time developing things for my C64 in the last 2 years than anything else. There are a great number of challenges to making graphics and music for these systems that give a greater appreciation of what developers did back in the day with far less resources than we have available to us now.

I’m guessing this C64OS will work on the Mega65?

C64OS gets better and better! Version 1.04 has been released, the Multimedia Release. In this version, there is a new graphics file format called “Commodore Grafix” which has support for metadata, variable frame rate sizes, native/non-native video modes, multi-frame matrix images, including 3D models, panoramas, and animation sequences. There are the new and/or improved Creator Tool and C64 Archiver, and the new SID Preview Utility with a SID Search Service. Finally, the gfx.lib supports character-mode graphics. (Some new features only available with the use of a RAM expander) Whew!

Check out the more complete descriptions of C64OS v1.04 and short videos of the Multimedia Release at

https://c64os.com

P.S. Remember… to upgrade to v1.04, you must have upgraded to the previous versions, v1.00 to v1.03, in order. See https://c64os.com/c64os/softwareupdates

That is very cool. Immensely impressive. Love the multitasking style draggable screens! Looks like the ideal thing for my Ultimate64.
