How very inclusive. English is spoken as a primary or secondary language by around 2bn people in the world and it became that way, by and large, via all the routes that modern "liberals" claim to despise so. Ironically, as they busy themselves trying to "decolonise" thought and teaching everywhere else, it never seems to occur to them that the very language they use to express their ideas in was the end result of some of the most pervasive examples of colonisation there has ever been.

The sheer racism when they accuse people who speak grammatically gendered languages of "sexism" should surprise me, but it doesn't.

Do as I say not as I do...

I don't think you'll ever find out.

The docs are a joke and fake-Gunnar doesn't know so you won't find out from him either.

Perhaps you could email the real Gunnar and ask?

I suspect a someone trolling, playing the Teutonic Deutschbag card pretty hard. Others seem more convinced though.

English lacks a term that covers lingua franca.

French was the lingua franca before English. As I recall, France used to be one of the most populous nations in Europe until they were involved in too many wars. Wars make countries poor while good economics make countries wealthy. Unfortunately, capitalism, free trade and fiscal conservativeness have become bad names in some of the same nations that became prosperous from them.

English has adopted many French words which are now English words with funny spellings that make it harder to learn English. English is still pretty easy to learn, despite some inconsistencies, and it is usually short to say and write. It could use another dose of simplification like was done during Teddy Roosevelt's administration as I recall. Much worse than English as the lingua franca is many of us English speakers not adopting the metric system which is clearly superior. There was an attempt when I was in school but then the U.S. back tracked.

You're getting there, slowly.

Scientists, military, and drug dealers are mostly metric.
And over the decades I've noticed the colloquial acceptance of mm and litres. If you converted your gas pumps to litres instead of gallons, then the price/litre might not seem that high

What would speed it up is if the the US started displaying dual values as standard.
- List both F and C during the weather reports
- As highway signs inevitably need replacing, have all new signs show miles and km
- Have all tape measures and rulers in inches and cm
- Have all scales and packaging display pounds and kg / oz and g
- List all properties in both square feet and square meters

Then in 10-15 years make the metric value the first/prominent value in dual displays.
Then 10-15 years after that remove the imperial value altogether.

And no matter what, for the sake of everything you hold dear, do not make it a political issue.

I know a lot of people seem have the idea that with the advent of increasingly powerful pocket computers, we don't need to change anything as the device will just covert everything on the fly.
It goes beyond that. It is about how we think, and conceive things in a collaborative environment.

The US does use the metric system, just not directly. The present imperial units for mass and length are actually defined in terms of the corresponding SI base units. Thus, so are all derived units.

No it doesn’t, it means the language of the Franks… that some Frankish tribes later gave name to the country we know as France with a langauge known as French doesn’t mean that Franks spoke French - they were Germannic tribes. Think Frankfurt, not France :)

At our current pace, the U.S will adopt the metric system in about 2100. The worst part is the transition as now we need to know the English conversions and the English to metric conversions. The sad part is we went part way to transitioning to the Metric system and then back tracked.

Thanks. You beat me to it and explained it well.

Any language can be a local lingua franca but the global lingua franca of politics/trade/technology is English, was French before it, and Italian/Latin before it.

As much as I love (and am often the cause of) long sojourns far from the topic at hand, does anyone know where the up to date instruction set documentation is for Apollo?

Well if you want to get that finicky, it's also worth pointing out to Matt that the "Norman French" that English gets so many words from (due to their colonisation of Blighty) isn't French either. ;)

@Bosanac

New features without documentation isn't a lot of use.

Indeed.

You know what’s worse though?

Documentation without an actual product. ;)
