So, I again ask nicely, what difference will a 4gb versus an 8gb version of the RPi 4 Model B make to 'real world' Amiga PiStorm performance?

None.

Thanks! Every little helps in this economy!

I assume that a RPi4 would create a better performing PiStorm32 than the other flavours of Pi available (3, 3A, Zero, etc) or is the bottleneck elsewhere other than the CPU?

So what RPi is recommended to get ready for this? Would a 4gb or 8gb RPi 4 Model B give better performance? Will the Ram of the model I choose make much difference for Amiga use?

I'm glad you asked as I wondered the same thing. Researching the differences between the models seems simply to come down what the rPi is used for and, when launched, the 8GB model was for 'Power' users running data intensive apps.

I have an rPi 4 8GB running Rasperry Pi OS (I'm using it right now to write this) and I've not come across anything in normal day-to-day desktop use which pushes the RAM limit so my conclusion is that the code (and underlying s/w) used to emulate the Amiga CPU isn't huge and it's the running apps which will usually fill the RAM up. Running the OS, this browser window (Chromium) and a 1080 display is using just over 900MiB according to Conky.

The 1GB rPi 4 seems to have been sold as being able to run dual 4K screens so it's not a limiting factor for the graphics processing / output.

In summary, I'm not expecting the amount of RAM to make much difference to performance.

@Thread

I'm glad we've cleared up that RAM is not an issue. How about relative speed the PiStorm32 emulation is achieving? Are we still at 040 equivalency or are things pushing towards 060/50 day on day? I would really like to run Napalm in High Res AGA on this thing!

It would be cool, albeit controversial, to allow something akin to WUP/PUP to allow native code execution. I'm not sure how well you could expose the vector extensions via a library, except for a set of standard algorithms, but the number of potential uses for vector code is, well, as good as limitless.

Perhaps one day we could have along side with 68k AROS, a an ARM one, running on it. :)

Doesn't Napalm support RTG?

@Karlos

Yes as well as AGA, but does the PiStorm32 support RTG? I thought it was just a CPU accelerator?

@Karlos

I stand corrected!!!

The open-source project also includes powerful RTG support allowing resolutions of up to 1920 x 1080 (PI3) or 4k (pi4), offering the A1200 high resolution and high-colour-depth capabilities. The video output from the Raspberry Pi’s HDMI port, makes it easy to connect your A1200 to modern monitors and TVs.

@Karlos or anyone that knows

So if the choice of Pi model affects the maximum resolution possible, does it also affect the speed of the Amiga emulation?

@BigD

The pistorm32 uses the CM4 not the Rpi4 and is a much more integrated design.

@BigD

It's 68K emulation and it certainly does as it's a cpu bound emulation.

Yep, it is the accelerator you could only have dreamt about back in the day.

If you remember my AmiWest presentation this is exactly something I want to avoid - a growing zoo of different binary targets for AmigaOS, therefore no, I would still prefer to go through a library approach.

So, given the assumption of potentially limitless use cases for vector units, maybe the solution to that is to define (or adopt an existing, e.g. wasm) bytecode definition that can be JIT compiled to native code and executable via a library call. One could implement the most basic scalar interpreter as a reference for testing against. Something like programming a shader, except intended specifically for SIMD data processing.

@BigD

Pi4 nearly doubles the performance as expected by changing from cortex a53 to a72, so pi4 or cm4 is definitely worth trying.

Haven’t you seen my previous reply with few links? Can you play 720p mpg video on 040? Or compute rc5/72 at over 1000mips? If not then the answer is yes - we are far far beyond 040 performance;)

@BigD

Since there's alreadyAROS versions running in both 68k and ARM, if instead of running arm code inside AOS wup/pup way perhaps we could have a native ARM AROS running instead.

What software would you run in that? AROS didn't lead anywhere interesting did it?

1000 mips from an open source project! Surely Gunnar must have cashed his shares in Apollo while he still could!

I scraped 1000 MIPS with the right workload on MC64K and that's an interpreter.

@Karlos

You're virtual 64-bit 68k chip right? I don't know if the comparison is good or not to be honest. Well done though. You know your 68k!
