Hi,

I just retired and thought that I'd see what I could do about getting my AmigaOne XE running again. It died sometime in 2003 so I've been away a while. I'm embarrassed (and mad at myself) to say that it booted just fine after simply replacing the battery. Aargh, I could have been using it all of this time. Anyway, I'm back on OS4.

The latest CD I have for it says OS4 Final Release in my handwriting. Is that it? Are there upgrades still; maybe to 4.1? Anyway, I've got a lot of forum reading to do to catch up on what I've missed all these years.

Just wanted to say hi.

NathanH

They should just name it “FinalOS”.

@NathanH

Make sure you visit Amigans.net - it's much more OS4-focused compared to this site. We'll be happy to bring you up to speed again.

Congratulations. I remember the day mine died. I replaced the battery, no joy. I stripped it down and reassembled. No joy. Put in a serial port probe. No joy.

I still have it, maybe I'll try my luck again at some point.

Great! Oo-rah or whatever

What do you think you'll actually USE it for? Do you have any applications on your radar? May I suggest Hollywood if you want to develop/code anything. Fun though messing around with the AmigaOS NG 'Show All Files/Clean Up/Snapshot All' Workbench 'killer-app' is IT'S THE SOFTWARE STUPID!

@BigD

It appears that during the long years of your whining and explaing why you can't buy an OS4 system you didn't even have the decency to find out what software the platform offers. I suggest that you go and finally do your research, or stop posting nonsense about a platform you know zilch about.

My XE has been running for all this time; I have to say it's one of my favorite pieces of Amiga hardware. While waiting for the first release of AmigaOS 4.0 I spent a lot of time on it learning Linux. Even though it's somewhat slower than the newer machines it still runs everything that they do. In fact, right now I'm got AmigaAmp3 playing Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in honor of its 50th anniversary.

Have fun getting to know the XE again!

@NathanH

I am posting on my MicroA1 using IBrowse 2.5.8.

I purchased my MicroA1 in 2004, and have been using it regularly since that time. I have updated OS4 many times throughout the years as updates were released. I am a regular user, not a beta tester.

I use my system mainly for tinkering with ARexx and surfing Amiga websites.

My main applications are NotePad, MultiView, Final Writer 97, IgnitionOS4 spreadsheet software, AOrganiser, AmiPDF, WarpView, DvPlayer, AmigaAMP3, AWeb, IBrowse, NetSurf, Odyssey Web Browser, Origyn Web Browser, PPaint and TVPaint

For backups, I use AmiDVD by Jörg Strohmayer and BackUp by Daniel Westerberg.

I also use a fine program called Rave by Daniel Jedlicka (Trixie).

I also use AmigaOS 3.2.1 on E-UAE on OS4 for emulation to use some very old favourite software.

I use many other programs, but not as often as the ones mentioned above.

@Trixie

Whether I know much about it relative to you is a mute point because hardware is never available and when it is it's overpriced. There is no de facto 'killer app', only the chance to run the fabled AmigaOS 4.x it seems?! If there WAS a clear reason to buy it (apart from Spencer obviously ) we'd know what it was by now! I'm interested in the A1222 Plus but I played Tower57 on a Mac over 6 years ago now! Wings Remastered I bought for less than £5 for the PC! What exactly am I missing? Seriously! Everything 'fun' is already on 68k!

Back to to the 68k bunker I go!

Each to their own though and I'm glad an AmigaOne XE has been saved from landfill due NathanH having the sense to carry out a battery replacement! Here's to Alan Redhouse!

@Trixie

I’m sorry @Trixie, but there’s no polishing that turd.

Let me have a go at it.
With AmigaOS 4 one can:
- run apps and games written and released for the 68k Amiga’s
- run a bunch of ports of ancient games that have been released on most other platforms 10+ years ago
- run a few basic ports of some simple open source projects
- run a veritable swarm of “one trick pony” utilities which creates a very disjointed workflow resulting in hundreds of mouse clicks to accomplish anything meaningful
- a range of out-of-date web browsers, and a few barely contemporary ones
- play mp3 files like they did in the ‘90s
- watch lower res videos, mostly offline
- make Workbench look prettier with the Enhancer Software

How am I doing?

As @BigD said, there is no killer app. None that justifies the price of admission.

I read the AmigaOS 4 Monthly Roundups. Each month a sadder parade of barely noteworthy items than the last.

@agami

No mention of running an FTP server on AmigaOS 4. Agami, you disappoint me with your lack of knowledge.

Does any OS/platform have a "killer app" any more? It's hard to do when all major software are multi-platform. The biggest reason to choose one platform over another seems to be preference, which is then justified with some kind of logic...

EDIT: Oh, and smooth HD video playback is possible, and even some 4K/UHD video (more work needed to support hardware accelerated HEVC, though). You're seriously out-of-date.

Hans

HD video playback on a Sam?! That's hard to believe and yes, I count it as the ONLY recently available AmigaOne unless you imclude the X5000/40 with its stealth launch for those in the know (which I don't)!

Have you seen the PiStorm32 playing 720p video on an A1200 without any hardware acceleration?

I expect support for the built in hardware decode will emerge once it's in the hands of more developers.

At the risk of sounding like a hater (I'm really not), OS4 has basically failed to evolve.

It is still 32-bit and unable to make use of multiple cores. As such it offers no real advancement that requires the hardware it actually runs on. The graphical subsystem overhaul is cool and there are some other nice features. Absolutely none of which require it to be on a PPC.

A storm is coming. You could say an irrational storm. One that transcends the zero sum. Bisecting the perimeter of my terrible math puns, I am of course talking about PiStorm.

What I am really saying is, "next gen" 68K performance is here. Soon it will run on hardware that while not as cheap as the Pi originally promised, is still much less expensive than PPC and can run as part of the original commodore silicon or standalone.

With a tightly constrained set of documented hardware (RTG, USB, NIC work already) squeezing the most out of it shouldn't be as hard as having to support tons of third party expansions.

OS4 was ported to PPC, much of the effort of which was porting or to C for portability sake. Porting it back should be much easier. I can see no obstacles except for the usual sh!tshow of legal wranglings.

Yes, when paired with the right graphics card (e.g., Radeon RX 550).

No, I haven't.

I don't know of any OS features that would require any OS to use any specific CPU architecture.
