Saw the news earlier on yesterday about update #2 for OS 3.2. To be honest I didn't even get around to installing 3.2 when it came out and I bought it (lack of time). I'm more interested in your experiences with it, living vicariously so to speak. Is the update worth the time? Got any cool screenshots? Experiences to share? Many thanks.

EDIT: for those who didn't see the news

New Update 2 of AmigaOS 3.2 available for download NOW
Brussels – March 3, 2023

Hyperion Entertainment CVBA is proud to provide the second free update of AmigaOS 3.2.

This new update demonstrates the developers' continued dedication to ensure that AmigaOS 3.2 is the most capable and most stable operating system ever for 68K based Amigas.

If you do not already own a copy of AmigaOS 3.2, there is now even more reason to get one from your favourite dealer!

The team of developers and testers have worked tirelessly ever since the release of AmigaOS 3.2.1 on fixing bugs and implementing a number of new features.

The highlights of the new features and fixes of AmigaOS 3.2.2 are as follows:

TextEdit has seen several improvements to its extension interface, and has gained an "About" menu item;
“Showconfig” now shows 68060 revision;
“IconEdit” now notifies the user if someone else modifies the icon file that is being edited. And pressing the help key brings up help. The whole color handling of colorful icons has been improved so icons can no longer degrade. Users may end up in a situation wherein it will look worse than on a perfect display, but it will not degrade the icon. As such the dreaded "downgrade" dialog doesn't happen anymore, but in some cases “IconEdit” will open on a separate screen;
“Kickstart” can now boot with earlier Workbench and icon library versions if they are present on the boot volume. This allows for installation of the ROM whilst retaining the ability to boot any AmigaOS version from 3.1 to 3.9, before installation of AmigaOS 3.2 on a volume;
The sketchboard.gadget has seen some speed improvements, that should be noticeable when using IconEdit;
The listbrowser.gadget has had a complete overhaul, making the file much smaller, and a bit faster;
The layout.gadget has had a complete overhaul;
The window.class has had a complete overhaul;
The RAM disk has had a complete overhaul so it is much less likely to cause issues;
Improved “Locale “support
Updated version of boards.library
You can download Update 2 for AmigaOS 3.2 here

Hyperion wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the AmigaOS 3.x development team as well as the beta-testers for their ceaseless efforts.

@mac6

There's no news in the news section here and I doubt many are party to the news about AmigaOS 3.2.2 never mind had chance to try it out!

Why not post a link to the news itself so we can all see what you have seen rather than making us Google it?

@BigD

I didn't know if I can post links, I'm mostly a lurker, and you know how some sites are very anti-hyperion. I was just wondering if someone has tried it, what does TextEdit now look like, what are those 'overhauls' about. Etcetera.

Upgrade completed. So far, so good ...

Please note, the following is not a review. It is a summary of my experience with AmigaOS 3.2 and upgrades. Other people may have a different experience or different impressions.

Originally, when I purchased AmigaOS 3.2, I was planning to upgrade my ancient A2000HD computer. So, I purchased the A2000 ROM as well as the CD.

When I actually received my package, I decided to try it out in emulation first before taking apart my A2000HD system.

Basically, I created two emulations:
- one using A2000 ROM, OCS, NTSC and boring non-coloured icons.
- one using A1200 ROM, AGA, Picasso96, uaegfx and beautiful coloured icons.

The A2000 emulation is the one I use the most.
The A1200 emulation uses alot of memory on my "host" system.

Sometime later, I updated to AmigaOS 3.2.1 and now AmigaOS 3.2.2.

For me, the updates were a bit easier because I used my "host" operating system to download and extract the files and move them to the correct place on my "host" system.

The Update3.2.2 drawer contains all the files needed to do the upgrade.

For me, the actual upgade consisted of:
- moving the Update3.2.2 drawer into my AmigaOS 3.2 Workbench drawer,
- replacing the old ROM file with the new ROM file from Update3.2.2,
- updating my uaerc config file to use the new ROM file,
- launching e-uae and doing the rest of the install from AmigaOS 3.2.

When I launched AmigaOS 3.2.1 (with the new 3.2.2 ROM already installed), the rest of the upgrade was very easy.
- opened the Update3.2.2 drawer,
- followed the instructions in the "HowToInstall" file,
- opened the ADFs drawer,
- double clicked on Update3.2.2.adf.

This created a "floppy disk" on the Workbench and the installer was inside that floppy disk.
- opened the Update3.2.2 floppy disk,
- opened the Install drawer,
- chose the language I wanted to use.

This launched the actual installer in the language I chose. All sweet and automatic from this point onwards until it was finished. The installer asked a few questions along the way, but it was all very straight forward. As the install proceded, other "floppy disks" popped up automatically on the Workbench as needed by the installer program, and all these other "floppy disks" disappeared when no longer required.

The installer replaced a bunch of system related files, but did not touch any of my other stuff. It also backed up the previous startup-sequence file before replacing it with the new one.

---------

As a user, I do not see any huge change at first glance. All looks the same as before the update, except the title at the top of the screen shows AmigaOS 3.2.2 instead of AmigaOS 3.2.1.

However, the new version of TextEdit is improved over the previous version.

And all my other software appears to work as before the upgrade.

I won't comment on the other changes shown in the change log.

AmigaOS 3.2.1 was very stable for me.

And I hope that AmigaOS 3.2.2 will be stable as well.

---------

Please remember that I am using emulation, not a real Amiga.

My "host" system is a MicroA1 running AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition Update 2.

My emulator of choice is a very old version of E-UAE called uae-sdl.

As I indicated above, I like my A2000 emulation the best, simple and clean.

My A1200 emulation is very beautiful, but uses alot of memory on my "host" system.
1024x768 at 32 bit is very beautiful, but I usually use 800x600.

It’s worth it for those who spend time tinkering with the OS and its components, if all you use the os for is launching games, then… not really.

A challenge is that there are so many incarnations of AmigaOS 3 in use, and software with varying degrees of compatibility, old tricks no longer works, new tricks have been added that don’t work on older releases etc. And all development seems rather ad-hoc, with stuff added as they go. One annoying thing with this 3.2.2 update is that there apparently are components that have kept version/date strings from 3.2 and 3.2.1 yet are not identical, because… well, it can be many things. Icon.library 47.5 is one such example I saw right away.

I have yet to go through my “buglist” for 3.2.1 to see if all are fixed in 3.2.2, but at least a few of the most obvious are. A good trick to test the OS is to use a very restraint system that is low on memory, so that memory footprint and leaks become obvious.

@kolla

Good points kolla.

Before OS4, I had AmigaOS 3.1 running on a 68000 CPU (no accelerator).

I never had 3.5 or 3.9 or the Boing bags or 3.1.4 or whatever it was called.

So, yes, I can see that there might be alot of conflicts for anyone trying to use software from those other incarnations of AmigaOS 3.

A few days ago, I installed MagicMenu on my emulated Amiga. It seems to work just fine. I'm also attempting to find an unarchive program for AmigaOS 3.2. I can't remember what I used on my old A2000HD. LHA maybe? It's been so long now.

Probably just LhA, but I wrote this specifically because there wasn't a ReAction GUI unarchiver for OS3.2 (needs xadmaster.library): https://www.unsatisfactorysoftware.co.uk/download.php?file=avalanche

Strangely enough the icon.library still doesn't support png icons, so some icons aren't there anymore unless you install the one from aminet.

When you wanna compile a package and do an 'sh configure', it stops w/ the message ' configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables'
Which is weird as it compiles w/o a problem on previous projects (which have a makefile already).
I didn't had this problem w/ 3.2.1 and it works perfectly w/ my 3.9 boot. So something is broken here.

Yes, it's a free update and doesn't seem to be any reports of strange behaviour/crashes.

That said, using OS 3.1 and 1.3 here. Not comfortable with the back story of OS 3.2, developers not seeing any money, despite Hyperion seemingly making money from it. Then there's the ongoing legal issues with regards to whether Hyperion have the right to publish it at all, court cases with Amiga Corp/Cloanto, etc.

Anyway, 1.3 rocks

That seems the 'killer-app' feature! I'm having some issues right now because my A1200 is refusing to boot from 3.2.1 pre-installed on a CF card. The additional old spinning hard drive connected through the buffered CF2IDE adapter has Workbench 3.0 on it which will not boot properly unless I have the CD-Rom connected with the required new libs files!

It's a nightmare with OS3.2.1 until I get the CF card working!

Several of the developers have repeatedly said that they don't actually want to earn anything from their efforts with this

While I support that they might not want to earn from their efforts, I wonder if not developers why does one should support anyother

Good points.
Yeah, 3.2.1 crashed on my 1200 constantly, trying to boot from disks.
I'll be buying new ROMs again now.
Really glad people are trying to fix this legacy stuff, although, i'd like to move forward into the modern age now that we have affordable things like PiStorm.
I guess you have to get the old stuff fixed before adding in new stuff though.
Maybe I should stop now lol.

I agree.
Some sort of donation is a great idea. If it goes to the developers.
