| Do you play computer role playing games? What titles in that genre you like on your Amiga (broadly construed)?
My favorite games: Abandoned Places (I like wandering overland map and exploring dungeons with slowly increasing difficulty) Ambermoon (concepts, visuals, music) EyAngband (open source Angband variant; well balanced unlike many other variants) Ishar 2 (probably the best GFX for an Amiga game; well, the English translation is horrible)
And yours? Last edited by pavlor on 19-Nov-2023 at 08:44 AM.

On Amiga ? Definitely Ambermoon. Not only technically, but also Storywise and basically the whole game.
Second place would go to Amberstar actually
After that probably one of those D&D titles (both the ones with strategy combat and also Eye of the Beholder titles). But the ones with strategy combat were better.
And of course Legend of Faerghail even if it cannot really compare with the Ambers or the D&D titles... but I sort of liked the game.

I'm still a fan of 'The Faery Tale Adventure' and one fine day I will try and play it completely through together with one of the Ultima parts.
Well Angband seems to be more a 'Rogue Like' game, maybe this will not even fit in the class of RPGs. 'Rogue Likes' always frustrated me because there is no real story behind them, some more modern like Rogue Likes have nice Isometric GFX but as long as I'm just playing against an algorithm generated environment I would miss the meaning behind it.

| Dungeon Master and Black Crypt are right up there with Eye of the Beholder and Ishar series. Later Ultima and gold box D&D games (Kryn series especially) started using the Amiga gfx and sound better which made them more playable. Meynaf ported the Atari version of Gauntlet which is better than the Amiga disgrace and made new dungeons for Dungeon Master that are quite good as well as making Dungeon Master more system friendly. There are many gems out there depending on what RPG style is liked and how much tolerance there is for games that use fewer of the Amiga features.

| dungeon crawlers, Bloodwych and bloodfest. top down, I really loved Angband and Zangband. Once upon a time, a guy by the nickname Bablos ported to the Amiga a huge set of Moria/Angband variants. I liked most of them, actually

Yeah! Angband with pull down menus for most important commands, really user friendly interface for a new user like me (then). |

If it fits into YOUR definition of a RPG, then it is a good enough RPG for me.
It is on my list of Amiga games I want to play, but it was too hard for me last time I tried (well, my skills are quite lame). |

Hero Quest II: Legacy of Sorasil

It looks like a real RPG to me.
Back in those days, the definitions for Adventure, RPG or Action Adventure where not as clear as today.
In an Adventure, you are playing a character in a story, usually you have to follow a very narrow path to solve all the riddles and win. The number of scenes are limited and there will be a riddle, an item or an action in every scene.
In an RPG you can (often) chose an character (or a party with different characters) and play a role in a game, you can improve, your character collect useful items, but story telling isn't always as great as on an Adventure. You might move your character through wide 2D/3D worlds and even if it has a strong story like an adventure, you will have to travel around a lot and improve your character before you could solve the story. Fights are often done in rounds, that might sometimes a bit static.
An Action Adventure is a bit more like an RPG where you will have to fight with your joystick, hit with the right weapon in the right direction and avoid hits by fast movements.
Some text adventures from the early days are more like RPGs: run somewhere, become stronger, buy the right swords and be rated for the gold you have found.
Todays Adaventures and RPGs are great in srory telling, back in the Amiga times, they where not so good doing it. Ultima for example, has great stories, with poor GFX but some Dungeon games belonging to RPGs have not.
JRPGs have often great stories to tell, thanks to RPG-Maker there are a lot of RPGs out there with good stories and thank to RPG Player you can play them on AOS4, MOS ore AROS.
I have heard they have many good RPGs and not all look like those Nintendo JRPGs with little obese kids running through comic towns. Last edited by OneTimer1 on 24-Nov-2023 at 07:26 PM.
