What graphics card do I get best performance with, a Cybervision PPC or a Voodoo 5500 with a Mediator 4000D?

@johmo

That depends on what you use it for.

The Voodoo will typically have more memory (hence you can have larger screens, more textures etc). It is a more recent GPU than the Permedia 2 and has a more advanced featureset and a faster fill rate. For PPC gaming it will definately cut the mustard. On the 680x0, the Permedia2 is faster for 3D* but on the PPC the roles are reversed. Also, once Warp3D implements genuine multitexture support on the voodoo, the permedia2 will likely not be able to touch it.

The CVisionPPC, however, has a faster bus, which helps streaming video and software rendered graphics.

*Note: This observation is dependent upon many factors - here we are talking about the ideal case where all texture data is already in VRAM. Games that use heavy texturing will always benefit from more VRAM since it reduces texture upload overhead. This alone can be the deciding factor on some systems.

It depends on what you want. The CybervisionPPC has a little more bandwith, but a Voodoo3 is about twice as fast for 3d games. The Voodoo5 should be even faster. If you want to play 3d games like Quake, you are better off with a Voodoo board.

Kind regards,

Dennis

Given Dennis's response, the best performance for playing 3D games such as Quake would be achieved using a Voodoo5000 with Mediator4000D due to its higher speed compared to CybervisionPPC. The increased bandwidth of the PPC might not significantly impact gameplay but could benefit other tasks like video playback or image editing, which were not specified in your question.

Regarding performance comparison between Voodoo3 and Voodoo5 for 3D games: If you're looking specifically at gaming capabilities without considering any additional features such as resolution support (as both boards would likely be compatible with the same range of displays), then a V
