@DaveP

Sounds like a French movie. I went once to a French movie. About a couple that biked in the country side and talked about personal feelings. I think for 2 hours long. I cried, but not because of the movie but because of the pain I had. If I just could have found a piece of rope.

Not to mention the time I went to see a Japanese movie which I thought was about action on the water or something. It turned out to be that you had some boys that took synch swimming lessons.

How come I never end up with a p*rn movie?

Amelie? Yeah a bit wacky in places but very very good.

Aguire, The Wrath of God (German) is also a stunning film although the dvd is a bit blurred.

Dave.

Personally, I have a bit of a problem with films in languages that I don't understand.

In English/American films, I understand what's going on. Yet for some bizarre reason (I'm a neurotic, okay?! ), my eyes still wander between the on-screen action and the subtitles. I wish I didn't do that, because quite frankly, sometimes it scares me. It's just...not...right. They get things wrong, they miss out on relevant stuff, and also it's mostly not possible to translate every word that's spoken throughout a long piece of dialogue, or you'd fill the entire screen with subtitles.

This proves to me that if I didn't understand the native language of the movie (i.e. English), I'd miss out on a better part of it. And the part you did get to experience wouldn't really be as good as you know that the whole of it is.

So to put a cinematic experience entirely in the hands of a translator makes me feel a bit uneasy about the whole thing.

Of course, I do watch the rare foreign film, and they're just like any other films, some excellent, some not quite as much. But still, I'll never, ever know just how great those excellent ones really are.

So you've never seen any of the Taxi-films?

you'll get a laugh or two from those

In Taxi 3, you'll even see Sylvester Stallone speaking French

I agree, I can have the same feeling, but I don't judge a film by the language it's in. Such a film would be Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon- it was a bit tricky to follow with subtitles, so it's best not to think about that and instead focus on the magnificently choreographed action- warriors who can fly and so run up walls!

The only alternative to subtitles is dubbing, and that's extremely difficult since foreign speakers seem to speak faster than us. So, in films such as Bruce Lee's earlier roles, The Big Boss, Fist of Fury and Way of the Dragon, the dubbing is quite poor, but if you look past that the films are quite enjoyable.

After all, why should Yanks and us Limeys have all the best films?

I can also recommend Dirty Pretty Things with Audrey Tautou. And Station Agent is also one my favorites.

And the swedish movie Ondskan (The Evil is the english title i think) is good too.

Neither do I.

Problem is though, it can be difficult to judge a film at all if you don't know what really goes on in the dialogue. Of course, most subtitles do succeed in conveying the general contents. But it's impossible to tell if a foreign movie has really great or quite terribly written dialogue.

Yes! A really beautiful movie. Very good indeed. I did take my little brother with me the second time I watched it, so hopefully I can mold him into a trans-cultural movie-buff.

Which sucks even more..

Ah yes you see that is were you and I differ their is at least one voice in my head for every language and the can all speak english too auto translation is kewl

hey, jealous yet???

Actually I find that after a while I forget I'm reading the subtitles at all I just sort of absorbe them in and its as if I can hear them speaking in english

And i'm not nuts, my voices have told me that everyone else is nuts because they don't listen to thier voices, and because jason (voice #673) took over my body last week and wrote me a certificate that states that I am not mad so there

@mjohnson

I have to agree with Aldur here. Although I prefer to be able to understand the language spoken in a film I'm watching, I no longer have any problems with subtitles if the movie is any good.

Take for instance Bang Rajan! A movie made in Thailand was a bit of a cultural shock for the first 10-15 min. but after awhile I forgot about the subtitles and the low-budget atmosphere and became quite immersed in the fate of the small village fighting against vastly superior forces.

I'm sure there are many nuances that are lost in translation but I'm just as sure that I wouldn't understand much of it anyway even if it was all correct lacking the history and cultural background of the Thai people.

Thai horror movies are good. Last one I saw was The Shutter. Now you have The Grudge but I have seen the original (Ju-On) with Thai dubbing. It's a Japanese movie. But now they have a lot of Thai movies with English subtitels.

Funny thing here is that there is not a rating system in the cineman. So a kid of 4 can go in and see slaughter action. Like House of the Dead but when a woman comes out of the water they do block the boobs. So little kid sees body parts flying everywhere but no boobs. And on public tv they block smoking. Like no kid can guess what they do. And a gun to the head is also blocked. The most annoying is blocking alcohol commercial during soccer during the day. So if I watch soccer and there is a Carlsberg sign behind the goal it gets blocked and you cannot see anything at all. Why bother to show the soccer when I cannot see the goal?

I'm looking forward to Revolver, the sequel to Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels... but only because they're filming it near to where I live - I'll be spotting extras and locations that I recognise

Unfortunately, I tend not to watch films until they've been out for a while; the most recent good film that I watched was Equilibrium - pretty damned cool, I reckon!

City of God (Cidade de Deus) is a good film. Very accurately shows life in the Favella's of Rio (and indeed how life in general is there). Also has the added bonus of being a true story.

Brasil actually has quite a few good homebrew films.

yeah, "city of God" is quite explosive! It's something like watching hardcore videos of legendary Brasilian Sepultura in some chill-out mode. [- they often sing about the "other/unofficial" (or how to gently call it) side of life in the region].

and a French film of that size - "La Haine" ( the Hate ) - quite similar subject , in French only.

...and something form "mainstream" ;) - "Immortal". Quite a brave film - only few real actors -all the rest and all scenery generated in Lightwave & Maya AFAIR, and quite original world [as for nowdays s/f films] cyberpunk + huge cities (similar to "5th element") + ancient Egiptian goods ... but don't expect some original ending

it could be also "I Robot" - it's based on legendary Isaak Asimow's book, but it's done by "legendary" hollywood-assembly line-movie-makers Who knows - maybe it could be the succesor of "Blade Runner" ? [nah, never mind ]
