Announcement   Announcement : Amiga Calls for User Groups
   posted by HMetal on 17-Dec-2003 5:53:28 (7171 reads)
from http://os.amiga.com

Community has always been the backbone of the Amiga platform; indeed, without it, the platform would have folded long ago. With AmigaOS4.0 approaching release, the community has taken a lead once again, with dedicated individuals and user groups throughout the world working to show AmigaOS4.0 running on AmigaOnes.

Amiga, Inc. is now at a stage where we are looking to bring the user groups together into a more formal forum, providing feedback to Amiga, Inc. on how best it can support the user groups whilst also allowing the user groups to be able to bind themselves together in a mutual organisation for self help and support.

This new organisation will be a crucial element in the growth of the Amiga platform as AmigaOS4.0 is released and the community begins to expand. We are thus making a call to all user groups to submit their details in the form below so that we can begin the construction of this organisation and get the resources in place to service it.

I've got ambiguous feelings about microA1 - if it'd be really cheap [less ~300 E - the cheapest peg2] it'd change a lot,
but it has still agp x2, strange/expensive ram, beside that it could "lower the requirements", like A500/1200 before - making soft for plain A500 [in 030/040 & cgx times] wasn't so good [here we'll have i.e. g4 450 + ati 7000 instead]...

Would be nice to see the comments on the thread getting back on track. As soon as you start describing each other as amigans and fanatics (or similar insulting or emotionally charged adjectives) you know that you should reconsider even posting a comment.

This is great news... I heard in an email from a fellow user group member that Fleecy told him an announcement was coming soon regarding the user groups. I just read that email last night... I didn't know "soon" would be this morning. :)

Hi All,

Help out where you can. Create AmigaOne exposure by bring it up where you logically can.

Last night on the local Linux mailing list someone asked about PPC distributions to turn an older Mac into a server. I waited until the real experts had their say. Then I posted that the PPC based A1 shipped with YDL, but that most other PPC distros also worked.

I don't believe anyone is going to rush out and buy an A1 based on my post. However if just a couple of members ask questions, or want to know more, then some word of mouth may start that does some good.

Once Alan has the "money saving server(TM)" version of the A1 ready to ship we will have good reason to bring the A1 up to anyone with more than a handful of computers to rub together.

(To anyone in the Kansas City, Missouri, U.S.A. area who has an AmigaOne. The remaining members of the Amiga Users Group would like to hear from you. I'm also sure I could arrange for you to do a demo for the Linux User Group.)

Happy Holidays to All! (Whichever ones apply to you.)

@Rolpho:
Let's wait until the Amiga One Lite is ready to discuss its features (in the last posts Alan talked about 256MB onboard memory in addition to the memory socket and a riser with 3 pcis. If things work that way you'll buy a One Lite, a hd, a cd, keyboard, mouse and a case with psu... it's great because you won't have to buy ram or gfx card...)

@DaveP:
It's great to read your comments again

That would be a great idea

In my city many of us would have leave the Amiga if we hadn't a club.

This is wonderful news! I signed up our user group the second I found out. The members will be very pleased to know Amiga Inc. has decided to involve us again. AmigaOS 4.0 must be really close to a more general release for Amiga Inc. to take such a public risk.

I hope this somehow leads to free Amiga leather jackets for all club leaders

@Price argument

Erm... have you never bought an Amiga 1200 accelerator then? You get a whole mobo for around the price of a top of the range Amiga PPC board.

@Thread
Great idea, I was just thinking to myself it would be useful to have something like this, and already Ray has implemented it! Nice one!

Cheers, Ian

Sorry about that Crumb. I will lengthen the text field so that future additions aren't plagued by this problem. Also, in the next days, the capability for you to edit your entry will be available, so you can then take advantage of the longer comment length.

I will announce here when editing is possible for your entry.

That's what happens when your right hand and your left hand are in sync. :)

Fleecy notified me early Tuesday that he needed this and it was implemented and online by the same evening. So much for comments about coding snowflakes and whatnot, as seen "elsewhere."

There! About time I added our own usergroup :)
I think these was some form of this thing before, but you had to register as a developer on the developer site or something.. lazy as I was, I never got around to it.. but now, we should be in there :)

Nice to see something like this on the Amiga site :)

Well, you didn't have to register as a developer, but just create an account to log into the amigadev.net site. Once you logged in, the process was very similiar to what is now on Amiga's site.

Agreed. This is where it should have been. I always thought it was a bit odd that the user group listing was only available via the developers site. Now let's see what will come of all of this.

In Poland for example AFAIK NOBODY's got IT !!! - because of IT's PRICE

Well in the Czech Republic there are no A1 owners either. But this is quite understandable because so far there has been neither an Amiga dealer in the country, nor a reasonable OS to run.

Things will hopefully get better after the release of OS4. I personally don't expect an Amiga boom in the Czech Republic but I hope we'll be able to form a decent usergroup.

Regards,
TRIXIE

@price [sorry ;)]
hmm.. as it seems, rather nobody in central Europe has A1 [concluding - in "more" eastern regions the more ;(]. Then how the hell we've got to make the shows of the new Amiga? My group is beginning to make 2 3d games now, we've done it before on Amiga, so why not do it again, but rather not for the classic hardware [the sooner we forget about it, the better for Amiga in general, me thinks], even compiling process is quite irritating

@HMetal:
Thank you! Keep us informed

BTW:
Do you plan to start an OS4-only software repository (with a similar structure to aminet)?
