Hi Björn,

Excellent work!

I do have a suggestion though:
Filenames can get pretty cryptic and at the moment they use up a lot of space on each line because the full path is listed (which is not needed, since you an already see the path you're in at the top of the screen).
If you were to remove that path, maybe you'd get some extra space for a column holding a short description of the files. If there are a lot of files in a list it is quite cumbersome to have to click on the 'readme' link for each file to see if it is interesting. A short description will be much clearer IMHO.

Oh and maybe you can toggle the background color of each table-row (or highlite it on mouse-over). On high resolutions the columns are further apart and in big file-listings it will be harder to make out to which row each item belongs otherwise.

Regards,

Onno

@Ohno

Hi Ohno, thanks for your suggestions.

I've removed the category from the filenames in the directory listings as you suggested. But I will keep them in the search and recent list. I might separate them though to make it easier to see. The Readme column shows the decription the submitter gave when he submitted the file, so the description is really up to the submitter.

I've added the row color toggle to the ToDo list so I will look into that. I will however not introduce any javascript so mouse-over won't be done

/Björn

It seems I'm the only one to hate that people spend time re-inventing the wheel instead of enhancing the current wheels

Hi!

>I had a nice long chat with DaveyD, I think it was on Monday, about OS4Depot we both see >that there shouldn?t be a conflict of interest between our sites. However I wouldn?t want to >see software upload to only one of the sites. So a script to upload to all three sites may be >useful. Perhaps AmigaShare can provide this, as I think we capture more data about the >App.

I absolutely agree. I do not want to p*ss off anyone by only upload to one of the sites, but on the other hand it is annoying if I have to upload every file to several sites.

Or alternatively to a script - a user who volunteers to reupload my files :)

Hey nice work... the more sources of Amiga software the better IMO. Good luck and a prosperous future to all Amiga software sources, old and new ...

BTW: I just uploaded the Frodo port (without sound, if anyone has the time to fix it, ask me for the source-code...) there. Asides from missing Sound+Joystick Support it is the same like the AmigaOS-Version, though.

Ouch... "same like the AmigaOS 3.x Version", that should read... seems this week was stressy a lot if I write something like THAT above... :(

Kudos to Björn Hagström & Amigaworld.net. The site has a clean look , appears to be well organized, and includes links to the other file repositories.

Thanks,
JCC

I'm not a fan of AmigaShare (no offence to the maintainer intended, I realise a lot of work has gone into it and you have my appreciation for that), firstly because the design and navigation is a bit "fussy", and secondly because you need to register with the site to do anything much with it.

OS4Depot is very nice indeed, and I notice it also has an "also upload to Aminet" option on the submission page (which goes some way to stopping me complaining about duplicating Aminet, and I'll leave inserting such comments here as an exercise to the reader). However, upload via a web page? Ugh! No thanks. Put an FTP upload option on, accept .readme files in (possibly extended) Aminet style, and make it so that anything uploaded via FTP also automatically uploads to Aminet. The website can then allow mirrors to be selected (using Aminet's existing network), adding some resilience, saving time for the uploader and allowing both groups - those who want to see everything, and those who just want to see OS4 native software - to see what they want.

Everybody's happy. Especially if you can make an alliance with Urban Mueller so any OS4 native software that gets submitted directly to Aminet ends up on OS4Depot.

Actually if you can do that, there would be no need for the submit options on OS4Depot.

Chris

I applaud not using javascript, but that doesn't mean a mouse-over effect is not possible. In CSS you can define a hover-style for any HTML-element.. Sadly IE only support the hover-style for anchors ().

For any other CSS-compliant browser, using a stylesheet with these lines will create a hover-effect:

TR { background: #FF0000; }
TR:hover { background: #00FF00; }

(sorry for the terrible colors, I'm not an artist )

In IE you'd have to create styles for anchors then. which is described pretty nicely
over here.

But just toggling the colors is great and the updated site looks great as well.
I just wanted to let you know javascript is not always required for fancy browser-effects, CSS is pretty cool

Onno

@Ohno

OKi, thanks :)

I'll look into it if the current color toggling proves not to be enough.

Looks great. A modern and stylish aminet alike interface.

One suggestion worth trying maybe:
Make the 'Main Categories' a top menu if possible (make room for two rows of menu for future new categories). This will give you a lot more horizontal space for the actual listings (File, Category, Version, ...) and make them look less cluttered.

Fantastic work, Orgin (just like the adjustements you did for Amigaworld).

@z5

Yeah, that could work. Hmm.

I tried it on the dev site, but it didn't fell out good. Hmm, I'll keep it in mind though. There might be a way to do this without making you feel closed in. I've reduced the cellspacings in the mean time, to give a bit more space for file listings. I also cropped the category field, just hoover the pointer over one for a popup with full category string.
