Hi,

I do have my FSB on 100Mhz and I will set it to 133Mhz. That should gain some speed? Think so.

@Shoe

I've heard (from a Beta tester) that the newest release of AmiPDF is lightning fast, and no longer has those slow loading/refresh problems. I guess that's what you are referring to.

@Coder

Thanks for the review. It's good to read peoples experiences and first impressions.

Good review.

About MTB and the "must click on grey part":
it was like this with HDToolbox on OS3 and it must stay like this because there can be several empty areas on your disk, then how MTB could know which area you want to create a partition into ?
Example:
|--DH0---| |---empty --| |--DH1--| |---empty---------------------------|

You have to select one of the two empty areas and then click on "Add partition"...

bye

@elwood

It was a suggestion about the partitions. It comes down to what people are used with. But it could be a bit of a search for newbies. It works, that's the most important thing.

@ Coder

Thanks for the nice review...

BTW, the installation manual can also be found on the CD itself, so no need to get online to read it ;)

I actually was referring to people that did not have the cd or for wannabees of OS4. But again, the manual is a very good one.

It is running very smooth here on my A1. Sure I can crash it with badly written apps from the old time. As I understood it if something crashed and you select "kill" it will stop the process but the screen will stay. Like with IBrowse, when it crashes it stays.

But if there is only one empty area you shouldn't have to click on that

Coder, I suspect that the reason for IBrowse being a demo is a matter of licensing. Distributing the demo version may be free, while the full version would cost money that Hyperion doesn't want to spend until Amiga OS 4.0 is ready for general release. They would have to pay again with each version along the way.

Nice review. APDF was a 68K one or OS4 native?

It's native, but since it relies heavily on file I/O, which is a very weak point with the current clib2, it's extremely slow.

The latest version is between 10 and 60 times faster.

@Coder

Thankyou for sharing your impressions of the AmigaOS4 Pre-release.

I think these first impressions are very important.

@Quixote

That's true. It's something you decide to do or not to do.

Imho it would be better the other way around. Click add partition and ask the user wich empty area to work with, if more than one, or continue automagically if there is only one.

@Coder & Quixote

The demo of 2.3 was included for one reason: the 2.4 OEM version that will ship with OS4 final isn't ready yet. Therefore there were two choices: include the 2.3 demo, or don't include anything until the final release. It made sense to include the demo.

As for the testing and prefs issue, 2.3 and 2.4 have been tested under OS4 for quite some time. The problem with the preferences were only reported to me a few weeks before the OS4 pre CD went into final testing. As I couldn't (and still can't) reproduce it on my system configuration, it took some time to locate the problem with the help of Davy W and Severin, both of whom had the problem. Only a handfull of the 100+ OS4 testers reported the problem, and it doesn't happen on every system. As soon as we had a test case, Oliver fixed it, and I informed everyone where I could, of the locale.prefs work around so they could at least carry on configuring the software in the meantime.

The fix Oliver made was in the 2.4 branch of IBrowse. Stefan needs to apply the fix to the 2.3 branch, which only he has the source for. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view), Stefan has also been very busy helping with OS4 - helping port MUI to PPC, porting SnoopDOS to PPC, helping to fix some of the initial problems with the Radeon drivers etc etc, so hasn't found the time to create and release the fix yet.

@Vader

ok.

I am picky in the review.

So SnoopDOS is going to be made PPC? If I remember 3.0 was the last one and that was from '94. Really cool that it will be made for OS4. Any more info on this?

Stefannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
