Uh uh uh I really hope that this doesnt mean that the desktop amiga is getting down-prioritized. Bad memories from Gateway emerges when Jim Collars (I think) wanted to scrap the amigaOS completely in favour of a special amiga linux flavour. (Anyone remember the ?amiga is not about the OS its about the hardware and spirit? speech).

I really hope that AmigaOS isnt going to be canned in favor of DE. Especially because a synergy between these two products could be a really good product. My only concern is that it would be SOO easy to prefer DE over AOS 4.x and leaving the latter as a development platform for software houses who wants to develop for mobile phones.

One thing that eases my mind is that I think the Hyperion guys would put up quite a fight to preserve amigaOS as we all know it.

The success of OS4 is very much tied to the Amiga users of old. When Eyetech and Hyperion release their final products, we need to have already whipped up support amongst the old Amiga user base. Sales of AOne and AOS4 will make it a success. If we just sit back and complain about it, then it will fail and only DE will remain.

Everything Garry said previously and at Amiwest indicates that DE will have a pivotal role for the AmigaOS.
The fact that the TAO deal has been renegotiated speaks volumes.
Whilst there may be two branches of AmigaOS for a while - I am fairly convinced that KMOS will be porting OS4 to intent, post haste! It's the only feasable way they could excpect to have an AmigaOS laptop this decade!

Really, this is a best of all worlds scenario - OS4 on the A1 for the amiga community and developers and OS4 for everyone else on DTB's, PDA's and Phones AND x86 laptops.

What more could anyone want!

@Colin_Camper

And the other thing of course, is that DE/intent seems to prefer to run hosted (from what I remember of AI's old announcements), and the perfect host is AmigaOS. I think we will see some form of convergence between the two, but I wouldn't speculate as to how far this would go.

If KMOS were going to just kill off AmigaOS, why did they buy it before acquiring the rest of Amiga Inc and the DE? If they weren't interested in it, they would have purchased DE first.

Chris

I agree.

The thing is, intent by itself is not going to run a DTB or phone. There is something compelling and attractive about AmigaOS (that's why we're still here!) that COULD run on these devices - but you need the binary compatability. Anything written in c for VP or VP itself would be able to wipe the floor with java.

Hey,

The real test is if we get a T-shirt as promised (stated).

If a tee-shirt with anything Amiga shows up on my doorstep, then I will be a greater believer.

HOWEVER, I am already enjoying my Amiga One with OS 4.0.... I am finding more an more uses for her everyday. Image FX 4.5 on the way, YAM is a "one click" to check my email, IBrowse (although not AWeb) is working alright.

My hat is off to Hyperion and anyone else involved in getting these products to market. It may have taken some time, but it Definately is worth the wait. I am excited at all that is happening lately....

Thanks to all involved....

Tall AMigan

Oh sh*t NO NO NO! I would go for the MOS then.

Intent VP is a little endian CPU etc. And OS needs to bang the HW directly, always. Otherwise it will perform like UAE and we would need to forget fast context switch time and multimedia, etc.

Instead, I'm sure we will see AmigaDE ported to AmigaOS4.

For the laptop... I think already three years ago there were official plans of AOS on x86 laptop via Berniethlon (including AOS4 parts). Bernie has already been in talks with KMOS, so I would not be too surpriced if there would be x86 laptop (AOS4 run mainly in emulation) and later native PPC laptop.

Yes, well my concern would be that they would try to force users and developers to make the choices that were more favourable to their business. In the now more recent interview things have been better clarified (DE a different market and different product, developers will be able to chose etc.)...

"One thing that eases my mind is that I think the Hyperion guys would put up quite a fight to preserve amigaOS as we all know it."

AmigaOS is now owned by another company.

@Muffin
"PPL!! listen to the mp3 for crying out loud! ...always the same, commeting before you know anything...

That MP3 and the more recent interview weren't available this news post was made, and the wording on the speed transcript did make it seem like I interpreted it.

"..and the talk about DE as if it's some kind of a plague is getting on my nervs!"

Depending on the type of Amiga user you are/were IT WAS a plague!!!! People have been supporting this platform for many years, and I can't repeat it enouph, it woudn't be the same if it wasn't for us! AmigaDE was the thing that AInc. would have substituted AmigaOS with. If that had happened what would be left of the platform ? That's right nothing!

Not really true. If you put more money on developing DE than AOS, it affects AmigaOS !

Who said they did that ?

BTW, ever saw the selling of a company and/or products without any words at all on the amount of money involved in the transfer ?
Garry Hare said he bought the Amiga for his (developpers) community: everyone knows that if it was true a lot of years ago, it is false today... there is noone anymore in the "community".
No website for KMOS ? Kinda weird that a company working on wireless technologies, developping an OS (AmigaDE/TAO) that's heavily based on JAVA finds a website useless ;)
...
I could go on and on.

Sounds like KMOS=Amiga Inc. to me...
Sounds like nothing has changed except it seems someone has injected some money into it. And that Garry Hare seems to be the CEO of Amiga Inc, after all.

Leo.

Bought Amiga Inc.

-> There is something, they want enough to accept the legal and financial problems of Amiga Inc. As there are only two things left, its the brand Amiga and AmigaDE.

Bought Capacity Networks

-> There is a target and there is money to achieve it. Fits well with the stated goal.

No KMOS website

-> What should they put on it really? May sound strange but its an unnecessary burden, especially considering that the Amiga Inc. web pages are supposed to used if need be.

TShirts went to print

-> Nice gesture and/or will and ability to meet obligations. Its a minor issue really (except for some people ...) but a nice step to build confidence.

Law suite settled

-> Good thing this ridiculous thing is over. Interesting that the judge basically clarified that already the first ruling only meant that Amiga Inc. has to meet the requirements of the contract ... NOT WHEN ... as there is not a timeframe anywhere in the contract.

No request for AmigaDE on pegasos by genesi

-> Speaks for itself.

Paying developers to develop applications

-> Remarkable concept

AmigaDE and Tao

-> This is the part where the implications are quite unclear imo. To me it sounded like AmigaDE will be used in the short term to gain some ground in the market and later support as many different devices as possible, even if they dont run AmigaOS.

Conclusion? Announcements ... of things that already *happened*. Aswell as a little insight on want the long term goal is (and that Gary realizes it *is* long term). Also good indication that the cross-platform remark was indeed meant as in cross-pda-cellphone-desktop.

The pieces seem to form a nice picture actually. AmigaOS on my laptop and handy, communicating among themselves and foreign systems, powered by efficient transmission techniques and having access to "unlimited" storage space "somwhere"

Unsuprised and unexcited by this news, sure KMOS have great hopes/intentions, but whether any worthwhile/successful products will emerge? Long past caring who owns "Amiga" trademarks/IP to be honest. I just want to be able to buy a finished OS4 and an Amiga One (hopefully at a lower price than at present too), + some cool new apps to run on it!

@Leo

First off, KMOS is a privately held company, no public investors or stockholders, so no reason for them to disclose how much they paid for anything. It's simply none of our business, no matter what we would like to know.

Second, that post you just made is on the line... Did you download Garry Hare's speech and interview and listen to them carefully? He explains those things in common sense terms.

Havent read all the thread yet but I read on (havent seen it mentioned)
Amigaos/ Amiga one forum that Kmos plan to use the Amigaos/ Amiga one forum for announcements.

Not entially sure if that applys to the other site on Amiga.com

I m still catching up on reading the current news

The whole reason I loved amiga in the first place was
it was easy to use
didnt cost the earth to buy
and you felt part of a family.
there was and still is a club for amiga owners

having a club membership is very important and thats very rare nowadays.

having said all the above I have one question for tptb incharge of the amiga ' future.

Will I be able to buy a new amiga with the amiga os by Christmas
