hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Two new µ-A1's models on the way!
   posted by DaveyD on 28-Aug-2004 15:24:23 (15618 reads)
µ-A1 scheduled for release 1st October 2004.

When we first showed pictures of the µ-A1 last October it was of the first of a series of pre-production versions. Each successive version made was designed to make sure that the final specification of the pre-production product suited the needs of both Amigians and, particularly, large volume industrial customers. We used the pre-production prototypes to gain feedback from a range of such potential customers to ensure that the specification and reliability of the µ-A1 met or exceeded their needs and therefore would ensure the commercial success of the product. That process is now complete.

@Crumb

Reading is not your strong point here is it!

The 750FX is FASTER than G4 at same clock WITHOUT Altivec. That is what was said.

Also, I think you miss the point about these MicroA1's. Mini ITX boards have never been about powerhorses with fast processors, fast video and the like.

The MicroA1 is about doing things well, silently and small with low power consumption just like a VIA Epia and the like. The 750FX can do that and the G4 can not.

If you want a power horse, you need the XE or XC.

EDIT: I have a 750FX in my XE and want to upgrade to the G4 ONLY if the 1.4 GHz version is for sale.

@Eyetech

A few questions, if you will indulge me...

1) How is the u-A1 powered - standard molex connectors? or can it use an external Ac/DC adaptor (like a laptop psu, or the adaptors listed on mini-itx.com such as the "Lex 120W PSU and DC-DC Converter Kit")?
2) Presumably the CF card will be bootable? Is there an upper limit on the capacity of the cards that may be used? Is it CF I or CF II?
3) What is the height of the board, including CPU/cooler, etc? I'm aware that it is a mini-ITX formfactor board, and therefore 170mm^2, but the project that I have in mind will be strongly influenced by the vertical height available...

More of a general question to anyone that knows - are there plans afoot to get wireless networking operational on AOS4, and does anyone use a wireless keyboard and mouse?

Cheers!

Personally, this announcement doesn't do very much for me. The price/performance/features doesn't make me see who's going to be interested to buy these things besides Amigans.

I guess it would be easier to get excited if eyetech's plan for the future was clearer in terms of how they intend to make any money on this and how they intend to push the platform forwards. It all seems very unclear to me anyway.

@Chunder

I'm using a Logitech wireless mouse right now. It's a USB modell connected throgh a ps2 adapter at the moment.

I tried the logitech MultiMedia desktop bluetooth version (it's connected to my pc right now, also via the ps2 adapter) and it works to a certain extent (keyboard works , no mouse).

If the USB drivers are included in the update soon I will test the bluetooth setup again.

@Orgin

I'm pretty sure we can assume that Eyetech plan on making money in this venture. I agree it would be interesting to know exactly what they have for plans but aside fro the fact that they may not be free to divulge much (or even want to) I'm not so sure that, I at least, can make a guess at the viability of any such plans anyway! :_)

Thankyou
The front page is different depending on the time of day... unfortuneately the design of the rest of the site is fairly lame and navigation is sloppy. Every so often I have a go a rehashing it but give up for lack of inspiration... I have several folders on my computer with differents revisions that I gave up on

The only thing I don't understand is why the C version doesn't have Firewire? I mean surely home users will have more use for a firwire connection (mainly for external storage as a u-ITX case is small and USB1.1 isn't that fast) then the industrial market?

Just a thought...

@gemini

That's a valid point, I think. But still... let's just hope that some third party picks up and brings out those riser cards. Or maybe I should just be looking for a case that includes one to begin with. That should give you the option to at least use a higher video card and sound or firewire if needed. But then, I recall reading somewhere yesterday that a firewire stack would probably not come unitl 4.1, so until then, it would be useless under OS4.

Now I'm off to look for a new case...

@Hyperionmp

Only one question: will the AOS4 update avaiable in October on the hyperion-entertainment site? Because the last news was on June and I regularly goes to check for AOS4 update or any news added...

@Every one:

How can I post a new threat I mean, every time I've to reply a message in order to select: "post a new threat/comment"...

Have a nice week, and thanks for all efforts from Eyetech and hyperion-entertainemnt.

Nicola

"The 750FX is FASTER than G4 at same clock WITHOUT Altivec. That is what was said."

I haven't said the opposite. My point is that if Altivec is available you can make apps that require real power much faster. It's something like having fpu in your 040 and don't use it.

If Altivec is available you'll use it in the apps that require speed, and the speed difference is important. I don't care if integers are faster on a G3 because when I really need the speed I'll launch the Altivec optimized version of the program.

The latest g4 generation have a reduced power comsumption and don't require a fan.

MiniITX isn't about using fans too because you require a silent computer and that g3 requires a fan.

The point of using a MegArray slot is having the possibility of upgrading your cpu easily. I don't understand why Eyetech doesn't give the offer of buying it with a G4.

And the damage done not including a G4 as standard is that less Altivec-enabled apps will be released because half users will have a g3.

I think those are valid points.

Having then to waste money buying a G3 mod when you wanted to buy G4 version in the first place.

The second point i would not of thought off at this point but is clearly important.

I don't think that the C version will have that option, that is the PCI-104 bus that is available on the I version but not the C. The only way I can see to get Firewire on the C version is to get a PCI card but many mini-ITX cases do not support a pci card

Personally I would like the I version with a MegArray connector, and give people the choice of having a faster fan cooled G3 or a passivley cooled one.

Sorry Eyetech, good idea, bad implementation (IMHO which of course stands for diddly-squat )

Still a bit too pricey, unfortunately...

And I was expecting something more about the specs... some "secret" infos that I eared, seems wasn't true...

@gemini

I agree with you. I much appreciate the I version even if i don't need PCI/104, but the rest interest me. Correct me if i'm wrong, but FireWire is vastly used with DigitalCamera, and IRDA would be perfect to use the µAOne as a media center (just plug a TV tunner card on the PCI... if you have the drivers, of course :-/ ) and it would be very Amigaish !

Also, i hate to say this too, but falcon1 had one point : the choice of the CPU should be explained, and why the FX CPU have a fan and not the GX ones, which is more powerfull, should be explained too...

And last, the GFX cpu choosen... Half the perf than a GF2/MX !!! Errr...
It should be sufficient for me, but it WON'T convice people who want to be new comers ! Linux, which is a µAOne supported system, have much more 3D apps than AOS, and they may require something more up to date.

Like ALTIVEC, the 3D horse power is not used as of yet in the AOS platform, but is the µAOne designed to leverage the future, or to settle the present ?

I'm so sorry to say all this because there's certainly a lot of work done to design this, but there's some choice i don't understant. For me, the C version should have been like the I version, minus the PCI/104 port, but with a megarray and a better GFX CPU. It would have been coster, but it would have been more attractive anyway.

Sorry

The pricing looks great to me, but why is it $100 more USD than Euros? Last I saw the two were (approximately) $1USD == $1Euro

That was long time ago It's now something like this: 1EUR = 1.2085USD (27.8 2004 15:15)

These few words about MicroA1-C you can find on Eyetech site.

Quote:
The board comes with a single PCI slot which is capable of taking a -1, -2 or -3 slot riser card.
