Software News   Software News : Thunder Works Consider Port of Jet Thunder
posted by Toaks on 23-Sep-2004 13:01:45 (7306 reads)
As Amiga Flame reports this wonderfull 3d flight simulation is beeing considered ported to Amiga:

"In the AmigaOS forum, Steven Dobbs described how he had stuck with the Amiga platform until 1999 and that even now he still remembers the platform fondly. Although, Jet Thunder won't be in beta until 2005 and technical problems may prevent a conversion, Steven Dobbs with some help may bring this jet combat simulator to the AmigaOne."

Read more for more information.

Jet Thunder is a project to create a realistic flight simulator based on the air war in the South Atlantic, in 1982 - the Falklands/Malvinas conflict. The team behind the game are military aviation enthusiasts, who have spent nearly two years designing this jet combat simulator to be as realistic as possible. The project's co-founder and main programmer, Steven Dobbs has revealed in an on-line forum that he is wondering whether Jet Thunder could be ported to the AmigaOne.

Jet Thunder will feature a range of single missions, based on historical missions, and even multiplayer modes such as dogfight room, cooperative, and online-campaign. There is also a complex Air-Sea-Battle campaign system in which a commanding AI will give orders to naval, air and ground AI units based in the current tactical situation, the player will fly in an environment that may change unpredictably, so the outcome of the campaign can be different.

Check out the Amigaflame site for more Information and pictures.

This is exactly what we need, a flightsim in full 3d and with lovely gfx.

Try the link on amigaflame that goes to projects homepage.

Downloaded an AVI file from there, looks great. Even the cockpit is lightsourced.

That caught my attention right away, how the light changed inside of the cockpit as the plane banked and certain parts became brighter to reflect the light. Also, in the other video that is showing the volumetric clouds, you really notice the reflection of the cockpit console and everything on the inside of the glass. Lots of attention to details there. Looks like a great start to me.

Team

I was just thinking....

Hyperion are coding OS4, Hyperion are coding Warp3d / Nova (or at least a team headed by them are).

Hyperion make their main income by porting games.

Has someone PM'd Rogue etc to tell them about this as it would make a lot of sense for Hyperion and the game developer to start correesponding about this RIGHT NOW...

Just my $0.02 worth ($A of course).

Regards
Darren

Not really...it's from an old game never released or finished (But the project still lives in another shape )

Hmm....only 3 or 4 people know about DawnLight (so far) ...so I'm pretty sure we have a budding ASM wannabe on our hands!

I hope everything is better, whatever the problems was!

(I don't wanna fly UNDER the Golden Gate!...I wanna bomb it!!! on the topic of FlightSimulators )

If this landed on OS4,

You could count me in for a purchase.

I do like the volumetric clouds. Could maybe do with a little more ground detail but it's a tasty looking sim none the less.

fuzion: well what u saw on the vid is a very alpha staged thingy..

remeber he wrote something about a beta at earliest in 2005...thats pretty far away when u look at the vids and everything so im sure the whole engine will be souped up..

anyway i wont critize anything as i know what a alpha is and how much work it is from alpha->beta->final.

cheers

from the start I've been programming with portability in mind.

right now it would for example probably straight compile between windows and a suitably set up linux system.

just doing gcc ... and thats the porting over and done with - thats nice :) of course there might be some endian incompatablity to work through through the data files, but nothing currently too taxing should emerge.

hopefully morphOS or amigaOS will have the API's needed to do this simple porting.

course, would develop in paralel - but unforunately, I havent got the funds to get an amiga one or pegasos - so the porting will happen a little later, perhaps when Jet Thunder is in some advanced beta stage

steven_dobbs: so it all comes down to an Amigaone or peg. , that doesnt sound too nasty now does it ?

that said, the 3d api is still not in beta stage for os4 so development and testing it at this moment aint possible but hopefully it wont be long now till we have w3d .

thanx for replying to this thread.

cheers

Hmm... whatever became of the "Sponsor a programmer" initiative? Sounds like ThunderWorks needs a uA1.

@Steven Dobbs

Thanks for dropping in to give additional input. The best people to talk with concerning the required programming parts you need would be the guys at Hyperion.
