Internet News   Internet News : Main AmiNet Site Gone, Possibly For Good
   posted by OSS542 on 26-Sep-2004 2:08:41 (5677 reads)
It looks like the main AmiNet site is gone, perhaps for good now. Many if not all the other US sites also appear to be gone, and perhaps two or three sites (uk, se, cz) in the official aminet site list mirrored at the European site list. It's not looking promising here.....can we as a community do anything about this "AmiNet rot" ?

Staff Note: It is not clear yet which of the "old archives" will be allowed to remain once the new drives are in place.

Here is the notice from the main AmiNet site: (URL : http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WUArchive has suffered a RAID failure, it's nStor controller died. The disks may get recycled for another use.

This is what's available

A replacement machine has been ordered, it will be the last half of October before it's back.

WUArchive has been around for a long time, and evolved through several hardware configurations and owners.

It's content will be changing, some old stuff will remain, other chunks will go. For items to remain, they will require a sponsor from here at Washington University. A written statement of benefit maybe required. We are leaning toward K-12 outreach, and open source mirrors for wustl.edu.

If you have ideas please contact Allen Rueter 314/935-6429 or Dr. Bill Smart in the media and machines lab, 5-4749.

Thanks for your patience.

Perhaps it would be good for a handfull of driven people to get together and discuss the current crisis. If the mirrors are dying, we should look at setting up new ones...

IIRC, the last time something major happened to WUArchive, the German mirror took over as the main site.

Not sure why that hasn't happened this time (although I can't seem to access it through FTPMount for some reason). Has anybody emailed Urban Müller yet?

Chris

Yeh, this is really ugly. But maybe it's for the best. Maybe Aminet needs a face lift. Maybe an integration with os4depot! I have having stuff in many places. We should have ONE stop for our Amiga file needs.

Don't know if you have noticed, but there's a new search engine, or frontend to aminet now.
Ever tried to search for the lha unpacker on aminet, without knowing the full name of the archive? Well, it's almost impossible.. but here it's easy. You just type in lha%. and it searches for lha+anything+dot+whatever.. ie, lha#?. and gets those results. Also has an option to add screenshots and way more.

Perhaps that could be the "frontend" to aminet in the future? Now we just need some mirror sites.. and if it's just 20GB, I'd be willing to set something up.

If someone could give a mirror bandwidth estimate Id consider it.

@DaveP

Probably doesn't help too much as it covers the whole of WUArchive, but here are some access stats for FTP and HTTP

You can probably make a best-guess estimate based on some of the retrieved Aminet files at the top of the popular files lists.

Chris

I have checked the current status of the sites as of Sep 26, 2004, based on the list of aminet mirrors on ftp.unina.it, and here is what I found :

USA us.aminet.net Complete mirror, full WWW support (gone)
Germany de.aminet.net Complete mirror, full WWW support (working)
UK uk.aminet.net Complete mirror, full WWW support (gone)

Actually, the uk aminet site is not gone. The url (if looked up via google always finds wustl), but if you manually go to UK Aminet, the url works as usual.

Does not look good..

If i would have enough money for the hardware and hosting costs, I would mirror the whole Aminet and start a Finnish Aminet mirror.

A friend of mine told me about a quite cheap serverhotel with atleast 100Mbit bandwith. He already has server running there. It was something like 25EUR/month. You have to use your own hardware and stuff does not make any maintenance, you have to do everything by yourself. You also have to pay them some euros/hour if you are going to make some hardware changes or something like that. But it's still quite cheap.

But right now I'm just a poor student..
