hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : First AmigaOS 4.0 Pre-Release update available
   posted by MikeB on 11-Oct-2004 0:21:36 (15265 reads)
It is with considerable satisfaction that Hyperion Entertainment can now announce the immediate availability for download of the first Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release update for registered Amiga OS 4.0 users.

Notice: A moderator pressed the wrong button by mistake and deleted the previous news item and 120+ comments. Oh well, though luck, feel free to start again.

Due to the extent and scope of the improvements incorporated into the update, it comes in the form of a full ISO image (33 MB) which needs to be burned on CD-R(W) by the user and is intended to replace the original Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release CD for installation and rescue purposes.

Please note that the file as well as the resulting CD is for personal use only and may not be distributed in any form to third parties.

Registered users may also opt to order a new full CD which also contains the updated SDK and contribution section (details and terms to be announced shortly).

Among the new features are:

* Kernel-Level Altivec support.
* Much improved compatibilty/speed of 68k emulation (JIT not included yet)
* Improved 68k FPU emulation
* Fully PowerPC-native Picasso96/graphics system
* Fully PowerPC-native MUI
* USB support for input devices
* Support for onboard serial and parallel hardware
* Driver support for the SiI0680 IDE adaptor (including UDMA support)
* Improved PIO mode VIA driver
* Improved Internet capabilities and better ethernet support.
* Printing support
* Improved audio hardware support, including new drivers.
* Comprehensive bug fixes, speed improvements, added features and functionality across all system components.
* and much more...

Try doing a clean install instead of an update of an existing installation.

I also assume you updated your U-Boot and installed the new SLB using Media Toolbox?

Hi!
First of all 10x for this update!It's another world...
A few questions:

1) when do I download SDK update and contributions update?
2)It's the second way there isn't release notes about changes....please upload them....;
3) A part visible chances, there are many improvment to all O.S., but it is possible some of them are disabled for error in istallation, for example usb stack which miss in startup-sequence (I have added run >nil: c:usbctrl start in s-s);
4) prefs/env-archive doesn't contain contextmenu.cfg, and for this fact I'm not able to customize contextmenu, Can you explain me what is there in contextmenu.cfg in way to customize all CM? (another "error" in istallation is this: powermenu is left in wbstartup...);
5) Thanks for: DOS (Assign-mount and asterisk character instead of #?), Hires pointer, all improvements to icons.library (trasparency, live drag, ecc...);

Good Work and I hope to download Update 2 soon

Figures... my PC's CD-ROM died, I need that for work so I removed the one from the AmigaOne, thinking "well, it hasn't been done for months, I can probably use the Amiga's DVD drive for a few days". I do the transplant, my PC works again, I log into amigaworld.net, and guess what: it's finally done

If you are running an A1, you could comment out the setpatch line in your Startup Sequence file

@Hyperionmp

Will the update CD be orderable by anyone with an A1? I wouldn't mind buying it even if I can download the update. Update, SDK and contrib neatly packaged on a CD, yes please :)

Hmmm, I left the download running all night, only to discover the download was corrupted.
Tried again and it was finished in 3 minutes.

Hooray for Hyperion.

@all

The night was long and installation was only some minutes.
My A1 flies and distributed.net client says something about 7.9 Mkeys/sec so altivec support works

Everything works ok. Except I still get those reading sector errors from 1 to 256?

BTW Download time from Hyperion server was 30 minutes with 1Mb/sec dsl line. At first speed was 0.7 KB/sec whihc ended with 11 KB/sec.
After that I burn the CDROM the wrong way (ISO as file on CDROM, 2nd attempt worked, so I'm not used to play with my wife's laptop )

THANK YOU HYPERION & ALL THE AOS4 PROGRAMMERS

Since we all have to re-establish our posts to this thread, I'll just repeat what I said last time:

"Considerable satisfaction" must be the understatement of the year.

Well done, guys.

@Hyperionmp

Hi! Congrelatiuns for your work!!!! :D

Will be a "complete update" including the new SDK and the contributions later?

It can be a good option for the users with good connections, and only send the Prerelease updated CDs to the users that want it!.

:P

The SDK will be released shortly, I'd say second half of the week or early next week.

If in doubt, use SLB_V2. That's the full version that can boot everything from every file system (supported, that is )

@ poweramiga2002

This is a problem that happend only for two other people, as far as I can tell. It seems it only happens when you update. If you can, please try a new install.

We're trying to find the problem and fix it.

@Hyperion: A big thank you!

It's typical that I'm away when such an important release occurs, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it when I come home in 2 weeks

Uh, no, not really. SetPatch is still required to make third party devices NSD-Compliant. It should certainly work with that.
