Announcement   Announcement : Pagan Games needs developers.
posted by Anonymous on 15-Dec-2004 10:04:49 (5138 reads)
Pagan Games are looking for a wide range of people to join our development community to begin work on a new project and to assist in the resurrection of some of our older titles we have on our books.

With the uncertainties of the Amiga market of late and of anything DE becoming commercially viable, we have kept a low profile to allow the mobile and PDA markets for other platforms, as well as DE specific, to mature.

We have recently secured a deal with a new online distribution service which we believe will offer us a good outlet for our products and as such we are looking for coders and artists to join our existing team.

The project is to begin in January 2005 and is expected to take up to 4 months to complete (estimate). It is a small PDA/Desktop project not a full blown game project.

As with our previous commercial projects, this is a royalty based project, no one gets paid until the product starts to sell, us included.

Coders:
We require coders with experience in C++ and/or Java for DE and/or Win32 platforms. You will need to show us experience in game development or extensive usage of 2D graphics libraries and manipulation, in your chosen language. Ideally we are looking for a C++ coder, but are flexible on your chosen language.

Artists:
We require artist(s) who can create 2D gui interfaces, layouts, logos etc. Any previous experience of creating anything with a space shoot-em-up theme would be ideally suited for this position.

We also require the modelling of 3D objects, again in a space theme (ships, planets, objects etc) by the same artist or by a dedicated 3D modeller.

All rough designs will be given to you as a foundation to work from; you own flair of design will also be needed and expected.

Summary:
The design of this project is complete and we are aiming to hire the artist(s) first to begin work immediately on the visuals then to begin coding work once 50% of the visuals are complete. This means the coder will be able to develop with "signed off" graphics without the need to wait for visuals to be developed.

A good understanding of written English is essential. A good sense of humour is also required! Meetings are held on-line via IRC, and our own mailing lists and newsgroups, so a reliable internet connection is also required.

We all work remotely, there is no central office (but you probably guessed that already) so we do not mind what hours you work so long as you can keep your deadlines and can arrange a meeting with the rest of team when it's mutually convenient for us all. Meetings are held on a regular basis depending on your workload and requirements, however, we will aim to give you enough design to work on your own with little need from supervision by us.

If you think you are the person we need to hire, then please send us an e-mail to info@pagan-games.com with a short resume/CV with example work.

This is a good thing you are still here around Pagan.
I hope we'll see desktop oriented projects from you in the future...

It's certainly not impossible. For this specific project we're going small though ;)

For coders: If you know a little something about SDL it's definitely not a bad thing either by the way

@Trezzer

Man, now that's a wasted chance!

I'm currently jobless because the company I was working at went down... and guess what I was doing?!? I was writing gfx drivers for a mobile device using intent (both VP and C)! - ever heard of MyOrigo's mydevice?

Moreover, right now I'm about to release a small gamey (a port of a game I did for the mophun platform) for AOS4 using _precisely_ SDL (for those who are wondering, the game is starting the betatesting phase... here's a couple of screenshots: 1 and 2).

Now, where's the wasted chance?
I only have an AmigaOne and I *refuse* to buy me an M$ machine!
Oh, well... bad luck

saimo

Sorry to sidetrack the thread... but I'm just curious if what you are saying is that MyOrigo is the company you were working at that went down? If that's the case, that would explain why they did not reply to my recent request about their developer program.

Precisely that :(

Definitely.
Anyway, that "developer program" escaped me... are you referring to the SDK?
If you are still interested, I know that there's a new company now, called F-Origin, that acquired all the IP (I guess) and that is trying to sell the single pieces of technology we developed... but maybe a search around the net may provide more and better info.

Bye,
saimo

Hmmm....what kind of gfx are we talking about here in #-of colours, resolutions & sizes. And how big is the project i.e. expected workload/time?

Would be fun to hear som more details about the game...but perhaps it's a secret

New Platform games for the new Amiga. That's great news !!

Are your plans just to "update" old games or is it also to create completly new ones, with new concept, etc...

Jerry

DawnBringer: well, we're looking at 16/24bit probably for the gfx, probably not real time 3d rendered but 2.5d (3d modelled but 2d animated). Reason for that is that we are targetting as many devices as possible so dont want to push the hardware limits too much.

Think of it as pocket elite type game though that's far from the accurate but it will have that "strageic" element but mainly arcade driven style.

Its an small-ish sized project which we're going to build on with updates and plug-ings, but as standard you'll get off-line playing plus the ability to add your progress to an online clan ssystem...but that's a biggie we're gonna keep under wraps for awhile ;)

Jerryuk007: what we have a quite a few projects from the A1200 pre and post PPC era which have decent 8 and 16 bit gfx already done and designeds ready to rock and roll but with the mess AMiga Inc, AI, whatever got into we decided to wait and see what happens. We're not a big games' company so couldn;t afford to take a risk and release games during that period (it would cost too much bucks, time and effort). :)

Trying not be influenced by the fact that I personally hate 3D, I have to say that I think this is one of the worst techniques, as the stuff produced this way invariably looks extremely dull.
I understand it's a matter of tastes, but I think... well, no, I'll cut it here

@Saimo:

I agree that it easily CAN look dull (too clean), but a bit of spit, polish and a lot of dirt really work wonders for the graphical quality.

@ Trezzer

I still have to see a good example - never found _any_ in my whole life.
Anyway, if you're going for that techique, I wish you will prove me wrong

Apart from that, did you read my PM?

Toaks:

Heh, feels like age, but I can assue you we've never totally abandoned them, we chopped and changed teams members so often (mainly becuase the projects were so large and so much went on with Amiga during those times) that we felt it was best to wait. I know Trez and I are still very keen on Dafel, we even disucussed some ideas about it this morning ;)

@ Pagan Games

Good luck with the project. I bought Blobula and that's a nice little PDA game.
