Hardware News   Hardware News : New PowerC Products for the Amiga 1200
   posted by Mikey_C on 23-Dec-2004 18:02:18 (21755 reads)
ACK Software Controls, Inc. is pleased to announce two new products for the Amiga 1200. The first product is a Freescale 8245 based CPU card clocked at 400 MHz.

The card will have a SODIMM slot for memory expansion and also includes a Silicon Images 680 IDE controller and a Radeon Mobility graphics chip. This CPU card will fit in standard A1200 cases, but a towered system is recommended.

The second product is a modular busboard and CPU combination for use with towered A1200 machines. The bus board features an AGP 1X slot and three PCI slots. Additional features of the busboard include two DDR DIMM slots for memory expansion, a Silicon Images 680 IDE controller, onboard USB and ethernet. The CPU card will initially be a 750CXe product, but other CPUs will be available.

Both products will ship with an OEM version ofOS4 and contain a version of U-Boot as the firmware. Products are presently in prototype form running Linux and will be available in Q1 2005.

Additional information will follow in the new year.

Sincerely,

Adam Kowalczyk

ACK Software Controls, Inc.

Hmm,

I just may have to find out how well this CPU card will work with an RBM Onboard 1200 busboard and the associated Toaster and Flyer cards. The only problem I can see with my setup is that RBM's busboard makes the CPU card face the mounting plate, so I'd have to rig up an adapter to move the CPU card around to allow for a heatsink and fan.

This would give me another reason to take a serious look at porting the OpenToaster stuff.

It's a stimulating thought to get one, but hell, when I bought my CSPPC, it was just as expensive as a complete peg/a1 is today (Ok, maybe cheaper than an A1). Any indication on much this baby is gonna cost?

I don't know but I suspect it will be much cheaper than the uA1 or CSPPC.

What I want to know are the physical dimensions. Cheap PPC laptop anyone?

I'm glad I kept my #2 A4000D. Now I can see its fate, in a new tower, with a 400 MHz PPC and OS4.

Adam has great credentials - not only is he a betatester and groks the OS4 side, he has also had plenty of experience with the MAI boards and groks the HW side.

Great.... good to hear that.

@sgm

Me too. I've got 2 A3000's, so twice as tempting.

Wow then It'll be better than the coldfire
So I begin to understand why we see so much solutions at the same time...
It's really a good news for my A1200 because I'll upgrade him from HD200MB and nothing more to last PPC technology

Sure I'll buy it!!!

Hang on, did I just read correctly? Will this board fit in the standard A1200 case?

Mr. Hardware Computers will be carrying these accelerators when they are ready to ship. We will be working to insure that Video Toaster users will be able to use this long awaited product. Pricing should be better then the old days of the CSPPC costing from $1250-$750. I have been told pricing will be better then this.Imagine you system running on 512meg of ram with well over 4megs ram for gaphics and high speed udma 133 ide. The 4000 used much slower speeds.

Finally something to replace this @o$@er$u(%|n^ BlizzardPPC with. It sometimes takes me to hit the reset button over 50 times before it boots.

Sounds like you have a cruddy power supply. I've noticed that most Amiga expansion towers, etc. that were made came by default with pretty cruddy PSUs. They may have had high wattages printed on them, but the ripple and levels of the voltages on the rails tended to be crap.

Amigas tend to be VERY picky about the stability of the power they're fed -- get a high quality Antec or Enermax power supply, modify it to work on your Amiga, and your system will probably boot without a hitch.

I was confounded by exactly the same problem as you when I towered my A4000 in an Elbox tower. The problem was entirely the PSU. Replacing it with a quality PSU with low-ripple rails that were on voltage (tuned the pots in it and checked with a multimeter) and it starts up every time.
