Software News   Software News : Jabberwocky v1.5 available
posted by Kneedeep on 25-Jan-2005 20:12:47 (4278 reads)
A new version of the jabber client Jabberwocky is now available for AmigaOS 3.x, AmigaOS 4.x and MorphOS.

Jabberwocky is a jabber client software for Amiga Computers. It is open source and released under the GNU GPL License.

Jabber is an instant messaging system, similar to ICQ or AIM, yet far different. It is open source, absolutely free, simple, fast, extensible, modularized, and cross platform. Server modules (transports) allows cross messaging between other networks (AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo).

You can also login on different (or even the same) computers at the same time by changing the resource info.

The OS4 version seems to react badly to missing MUI libs (In most cases the
68k version just does nothing if there are missing libs). OS4 MUI itself
seems to react badly to mixed versions of libs that rely on other MUI
libs. We might try adding some sort of version checking in the future.
One know problem is people not installing the complete NList update.
If you install a different version of NList.mcc you need to install all
the mcc's that are included in the NList archive.

I have a minimal MUI installation on OS4. Not all the MUI libs are needed
by Jabberwocky. Take a look at my versions and compare them to the versions
you are using. Jabberwocky OS4 works if your libs are right. Also, you
need vapor_toolkit.library for textinput.mcc. which is available at
ftp://ftp.vapor.com/pub/misc and other places if you google it.

I would recommend checking out the CheckMCC function in YAM, it's located in YAM.c.

http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/yamos/yamos/YAM.c?rev=1.174&view=markup

It does what you want.

I checked my classes and updated the ones missing or with a lower version, but it hasnt made any difference. I crash after I've connected and I've just retrieved my MSN contact list.. the Grim Reaper stacktrace shows that its crashing when using NList.mcc .. do you want the crash log? If you compile with GDwarf-2 you can pinpoint the exact line that caused it to crash..

this version works fine here under AOS4, as did the prerelease version 1.5pre8.

I only have problems getting in touch with Yahoo users via Jabber. So I think I have to change a server where I do have access to MSN and Yahoo users? Any hint?
At the moment my jabber server is amessage.de or .info

I can't get it to work either. Grim reapers when I get my MSN contact list. Don't understand what's wrong. Think we really need to sort out a way of ensuring everybody has the most up to date versions of the libs.

Can the known fully working libs be packaged with Jabberwocky?

My only problem with Jabberwocky is I can`t save my prefs and every time I run it I have to set it up.
Someone has this problem? I have this problem since I installed Jabberwocky the first time in my A1 with all the versions I tried.

Is a bug? Pues va a ser que no! It is going to be that no! ( this is a rought translation of a very famous phrase here in Spain now ).

Yes. That's what we need. A slightly less thorough version of that will
probably be the next addition to Jabberwocky. I guess opening the guide
and selecting the "Requirements" button is to much to ask of users

I suppose I'll also have to list all the files in the NList package
in the requirements instead just NList. Assuming that people will read
the NList docs and realize they need to install all the files in the
archive is probably assuming too much.

I did some testing and the only "missing file" that causes crashes for
me is the vapor_toolkit.library. That's probably because it's
called by textinput.mcc and MUI doesn't even know it's needed when
it starts the program. If any mcc libs are missing MUI just doesn't
open the program.

I think most of the crashes reported here are a different issue than
missing MUI mcc libs. I'm working with one of the beta testers to
try to resolve the problem. For some reason, people who are using
a clean MUI installation from OS4 pre update1 aren't having problems
with Jabberwocky and the new OS4 version of the NList package.
The beta tester has no Jabberwocky crash if he reverts to NList 20.108
or older.

Most of the reports also seem to involve MSN contacts. The only difference
between an MSN contact and a Jabber contact as far as NList is concerned
is the "%" character. An MSN ID contains a % character while other Jabber
ID's don't. The only further advice I can give people who have crash
problems with Jabberwocky on OS4 is to try an older NList version.
