Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : Follow-up from Garry Hare
posted by DaveyD on 22-Mar-2005 0:15:42 (31419 reads)
As many of you know I don't spend much time on public boards. But when I woke up to full e-mail, jammed cell messages and many of my people pointing me to specific posts, I made an exception and have now spent several hours reading your comments and speculation. I certainly didn't mean to set all this off. My motivation in agreeing to the IRC was clearly my insanity - hopefully temporary. One disadvantage to this means of communication is it does not allow for quick follow-up questions. And, as an aside, the bot cut off some of my best and most controversial comments. But I guess the ones that got through filled that bill.

I would like to "clarify" a couple items. Please appreciate that I cannot and will not violate confidentiality, with anyone. I hope that I am not doing so now.

1. Is Amiga, Inc. planning to kill off AmigaOS 4.0?

No, no, no and NO!

2. Does Hyperion (I refer to AmigaOne Partners) have the right to extend OS 4.0 to say 4.1?

Yes they do. In fact, for you conspiracy theorists, that is the wrong question. Disclosing details of exactly what this means is confidential. Bottom line - they do have that right and I hope this comment doesn't violate our NDA.

3. Will they (extend that is)?

That is a business decision. I would assume If AmigaOne Partners find the market, we all hope to see, this decision is obvious.

4. Do I have AmigaOS 4.0, do I have an Amiga computer, do I know how to turn it on? And, if I have it, what do I think of it?

Yes I have OS 4 running on an Amiga and elsewhere (that ought to start a new thread). As an aside it was pretty difficult for us to get delivery in the US., even after pre-paying. I have brought this issue to Eyetech. I turned it on all by myself and am currently figuring out how to turn it off.

I think Hyperion's work is very impressive. Particularly so when you consider the limited resources available the Frieden bothers, and many other developers, have to work with. As an aside, the Frieden brothers are very talented and yes I like them. I release them from any confidentiality if they wish to comment on me.

And yes, AmigaOS 4 has utility in markets beyond the desktop.

5. Will AmigaAnywhere be on OS 4.0, when, who pays?

We hope 1.5 and future versions will be. It makes sense to me. Remember, we released 1.5 last week. Hyperion is pretty busy getting 4.0 to all of you. If Hyperion wants it, it will be there. And we do the work. We pay and do the work for all AA enabled devices and to be honest we have a minimum installed threshold before proceeding. This minimum does not apply to AmigaOne and AmigaOS 4.0. It may make sense to wait for next version.

6. What is the best thing any of you can do to support AmigaOS 4.0?

Go buy and AmigaOne and AmigaOS 4.0. If everyone concerned about extensions and the like either has or is buying the AmigaOne, it goes a long way toward those extensions.

7. Does Fleecy still work for Amiga?

He certainly does. In fact, he better be working right now. I make the staffing decisions.

8. What's up with the web site, its design, etc.?

We had to have one aspect of the site ready for a specific reason last week. I suggested the IRC be next Sunday. David pointed out that was Easter (good point). We moved the IRC forward, perhaps we should have moved it back. Knowing that many of you would be our first audience, we added several sections. Like all sites, amiga.com is a living project. It will change very frequently. In the near term daily. Titles are being added all the time, and the like. Our immediate focus is ease of use.

I did read many of your comments. I agree with some, disagree with others. We will make many changes ( a couple based on your specific feedback) but the site will focus on consumer marketing, most significantly the storefront and front page. As all of our developers know, the devnet portion is being designed with their input.

9. What's with all this AmigaAnywhere talk? Why should anyone care?

For those of you only interested in the desktop, skip this. AmigaAnywhere is not what it used to be (DE). This, and future versions, not only extend the market but as I said, literally change what removable media is and does. It is a big deal to us and some in the industry. Some people really like this whole ease-of-use, cross device, scale anywhere solution. Some of you see it as some sort of distraction. It is not. BTW, I did not mention Capacity Networks in my comments. We are not using them in the solutions we're working one. We very much like what they do. We no longer own them.

10. Would I please disclose our strategy, features lists, partners, plans and the like?

No.

11. Will I be doing another "interview" anytime soon?

I refer you to my "Temporary Insanity" comment above. But if AW asks and it is around a product release, or other major development, I will do so. Other than this note, I won't be on public boards.

12. Finally, several comment like this, "What makes you think you're qualified to be CEO of Amiga or most anywhere else? I don't think you're up to the job."

Believe me, there are numerous days when I agree with you.

My best to all of you. Don't panic things are going pretty good. Robots was good, especially if you are a kid.

Garry

Much better summary that the IRC transcript I read. Garry had time to give more
thoughtful answers to questions, than in the "rapid fire" IRC. Cudos for even
jumping in there temporary insanity or not. Very nice that he did.
My spirit are still high about buying an A1, I just need the Euro to take a
turn that makes my pesos look better. :) Meanwhile I'll be duct taping as many
add-ons to my 4000 as possible. Somebody come out with one of those vaporware
cards for classics that will at least let me run

Thanks for the (obviously much needed) follow-up, Garry.

Hopefully you (even read this and) realize some of the following:

1. Many people have 'seen it all' so far, so it's easy enough to read things into 'incomplete' statements. (Such as those made with a 400 character limit, and no follow-up questions 'allowed.') It's too easy to take a 'blanket statement' that doesn't address something in entirety (ie, AOS4.X rights by Hyperion) and see the worst. Sorry.

2. RE: AA. It isn't so much that 'no one cares,' as it's seen by many to perhaps be the wrong focus. Not everyone is in the IT industry..so while AA _may_ have a more profitable potential future over AOS4.X for example, most people here care most about the continuation of AOS itself, and some see it as mis-direction or a 'threat' to the continuation of AOS. That obviously includes some developers...I hope AA on AOS4.X comes to be, as in that event, I'd expect at least some of the current AOS developers to produce something with it, which would obviously give AA some exposure, as well as some new apps. Bonus if it's free on AOS4.X- people _will_ use it then. A few thousand users may not seem like much, but there's certainly a higher concentration of at least 'part time developers' in this crowd than in a sampling of a like (or more ) number of Windows or OS X users...plus if/as it becomes popular, if it's free on AOS, you'll also pull in some additional A1/AOS sales, which is good for everyone.

3. IRC is NOT a good medium for this type of interview. I don't think that's anyone's fault, I just don't think it was thought out all the way through. A single person asking the (pre-submitted) questions, or even a filtered questions list submitted via email would both have been better options all around.

I know 'we' certainly appreciate the time for the interview, if not the misperceptions derived from it, and hope that you consider keeping in touch in some fashion, as this community has seen it all, and could really do with the occasional bit of good, or at least honest, news.

i wonder about what happent to HAGE&PARTNER, i loved amiga os 3.9,
i sold my amiga1200 T ppc -bvision, in the last second too get anuf mony to bay amigaone, but 2 years later, i got it, now i am waking up from the drem off an
amiga native ppc OS and realise that it has become true, and yes i love hyperion, and i think there are doing the job very good, but alittel toooo slooow, anyway i use os 4.0 and i like it more and more evry time i useét
i think it coud bee even more better ore delvopment coud goo alot faster iff there had H&P on the os 4.0 team ( FULL TIME), and iff amiga, inc are willing to put a littel off money for delvopment to finish os 4.0 it will go quiker to make it finish, and iff H&P was in on the delvopment, maby there will continu to make software for os 4.0,

not to say anything bad about hyperion, i just love what H&P did to amiga os,and not to forget there (amiga os 3.9). iff H&P was onboard, there shoud not be in charge offcourse just co working, that coud be nice,

maby there will be helping on os 4.1 ??? iff someone let them...

i can see that now that hyperion have allmost finish the job it will not be fear to let H&P get some off the credits. ther still did a good job on 3.9

anyway what is the story about H&P not making the os 4.0 in the first place.

@Cecilia

"we don't need any more children sh*ting in their diapers, thank you!"

Children my a**. I'm learning to code on AmigaOS and looking back I've learned a lot and threw away many hours of my precious time. If AmigaOS was to change like what was inspired by the IRC chat the whole API would probably change. The RKM Libs book is only 900 pages alone!!! Everything I read would be lost! Now surely this wouldn't happen overday, but it wouldn't make any sense to me if it was to be discontinued.

if you had any idea of the ups and downs of my career, your head would spin right off it's neck.

here's a reality check:
when the going gets tough, the tough get going.
That idea is what has kept me continuing even when really horrible things happened.

however:
almost as SOON as the IRC was over, the whining began.

how rediculous!

and, BTW, there's no such thing as knowledge going to waste. anything you do to keep your brain alert and functioning is NEVER a waste. And i speak from personal experience.

Very cool...

I think its good Garry has clarified things and hasn't written a load of marketing hype and given some wishful road map. He seems to be genuine and realistic.

Thank you Garry! Just the fact that I know you listened and cared enough to clear up some things speaks volumes to me. I don't own an A1 or OS 4 yet, as I had been waiting for the final release of OS4. And I had begun to question if I should, thank you for reassuring my original decision to buy one!

Now as for guessing the mystery OS4 device, my guess
is a. PPC based 'tivo' type mobo, already used in
consumer devices, or b. PPC based server mobo, that is
already used in business circles.

Thank you very much for the clarification, Mr. Hare. It certainly was a very helpful followup, and is a relief for everyone. I appreciate it very much.

First off, Thanks for the clarifications and the initial interview session!

Bot/IRC client problems
The bot didn't cut off any questions. Actually it wouldn't have been able to do that. It might have cut off user questions, but users were told to keep their questions to the IRC line limit of around 400 chars.

Garry's IRC client did cut off lines, and he was asked to split up his answers into several lines so that it didn't.

Hopefully he'll be more familiar with IRC next time, and I hope there will be a next time.

Attacks
The IRC network was attacked (DDOSed) by several parties during the interview, the bot itself, one of the american servers and norwegian servers was the most attacked ones.

Logs of attacking hosts will be sent to the responsible parties. I find it sad on behalf of the attacking parties that this type of demonstration is still being done. Last time I experienced this was in 2001 with a similar interview session with Amiga Inc. This time most people didn't notice and the network seemed to have hold fairly well though.

Thanks to all users attending and please forgive me if you were unsatisfied with the session's technical merits and please let one of the ircops know what could've been done better.

Greetings.
