   posted by MikeB on 13-Apr-2005 16:32:33 (11113 reads)
April 12, 2005 - San Francisco, CA – Amiga, Inc. today announces the launch of the new AmigaAnywhere™ SDK (software development kit) version 1.5, providing increased performance, time to market and revenue opportunity for Amiga's global developer community. The new SDK combines both new features requested by existing developers, customers and users, and new services and technologies designed to extract the maximum potential from the next generation of digital devices.

@Orgin

Back in the days you had the NDA and SDA. And only when you signed the SDA are you being informed. I mean the mailinglist on which some mail exchange happens. Now the way it goes now as taken from the interview is that for registred developers the SDK is free. But it seems they are going to look at your case and see if you can have it. To see of you can become a developer. For all the rest you have to pay for it. This is how it seems from the interview. So even if you are already a developer it still is not certain if you can stay one by having the free SDK. It seems they want to review each case and make sure they get only good people. Now this is how it seems to me from the interview.

What bugs me is that where you can get this SDK? Not much info. But yeah who is going to pay for the SDK? None. Really no one. As in 0, zero, less then 1. But I am sure in 3 months time the developer list will have about 3000 names on it. PR magic as I call it. Ah well do I care? Nah not at all. Not anymore. I wonder what the price of the SDK will be? You got to be kidding if this is over the 150 Euro. I burned my tushy 2 times already. Better wire that money to Hyperion so that the guys there can get some pizza's and beer. God knows they deserve it.

But it also runs on Linux, so it's not a Windows exclusive thing

yes, but not even linux ppc, only x86.when more OS´s the better but A.inc seems that want that the os vendors pay for the port so i think that never will be seen a BEOS, Palm, symbian or MacOS port.When amigaanywhere be avaliable for more than windows and linux it will be more atractive for developers and users.

I hope that this commentary is not for me.My comments are constructive criticizes.I want more than nobody that Ainc has success and amigaanywhere will be avaliable, indeed, anywhere (every OS)

@BigBentheAussie

That's just silly. If AmigaInc don't WANT your money/contributions/whatever then you sure as heck shouldn't give them anything. They need to come down off of their high horse and realise they are not that good. They need to look after developers, not the other way around.

I wonder how much of this SDK is a). different and b). AInc’s own work and not just re-badged TAO Intent stuff.

I think that the following bits are new...

Quote:
...this SDK introduces a raft of new multimedia technologies, such as dynamic scaling services, the LinX matrix transformation service, the PRISM descriptive UI engine, a high performance Sprite/animation solution and a comprehensive bitmap font engine.

and:

Quote:
...an abstract, device independent state persistence service, content extension to support level packs and feature enhancements, and an inverted list database for more complex data requirements.

but this is the clincher for me - the thing that was sorely lacking from the last distribution:

Quote:
...incorporating a vastly improved help and documentation system not only documents the Amiga Anywhere solution but also provides examples, tutorials, demo and API autodocs.

For what it's worth, the login section recognises your old AmigaDEV.net login details, but then goes on to request you to fill in a form about your "Developer Interest" - unfortunately none of the options apply to me; I just want to have a play around with something new, learn some new things, and hopefully - eventually - develop something... *sigh*

@Fransexy

No, it was not intended for you. I included my comment to you directly. Sorry, I didn't mean it to look that way.

@Hooligan

It has nothing to do with different opinions. It has to do with closed minds who put up a hand in front of their face and say "I don't care, I'm not interested", and yet they sit around bitching because "Amiga is not doing anything". Just because Amiga is not jumping to do everything that the community is wanting them to do doesn't mean that they are not doing anything... And just because someone's opinion is that they don't like AA (even after they admit they don't know much about it and have never used it) doesn't mean that AA is a bad product. The old saying "You're damned if you do and damed if you don't" applies.

All I meant was that there are always people thinking pro-something and against something, and always people posting about what their belief and point of view about the matter is. Nothing wrong with that, thats why the forums exists.. only because of that I found your comment about 'bitching' a bit odd.

The thing is, if people didn't care, why would they be posting crap about it?

I'll just start by saying that I was never extremely interested in the AA concept, I'm more of an AmigaOS guy myself. But sure, it might turn out to be a really cool thing if it takes off. And it's good to see that things are moving ahead with AInc.

Best of luck to them, I can only hope that they manage to turn this into a successful venture.

Cool, so something actually happens at the Amiga HQ..

Question for Garry is: When will this technology become available for real Amiga users running AmigaOS4. Amiga"Anywhere" not running on Amiga's own OS is laughable IMHO.

here is the link to the new Amiga Developer network site. It's available from the link on the Amiga.com homepage under Developer.

As for not running on AmigaOS 4, that was addressed in the follow-up interview. See item 5.

@Orgin,

Dev tools should be easy to access so that people can try it out and see if it is something for them.

While I totally agree with all of you on this matter it's not that uncommon that (new) technologies is hard to come by. I recentlly looked into the new 3D TFT technology from sharp (www.sharp3d.com) and there too you have to request the SDK. It's not downloadable directly from the site.
It's wierd I know, but I bet there's a reason for it.

@herewegoagain,

Anyway, I think this is great news and I'm looking forward to a DE player for OS4.

p.s. And I too would like to know if I'm able to upgrade my existing SDK to 1.5...?
