Yes, of course not, it's up to the liba52 author. The prob is, frogger had the same problem with the same lib (only that was statically linked) and he had to remove the decoder altogether. The author was not happy at all but allowed the project to continue without being "infected". I'm not sure that he will be as tolerant now, as this happened many times.

Yeah that same happened with Frogger.. Even if GPL sucks you can't violate the lisence, you just have to live with it.. I hope this can be solved somehow.

@Cobra

All of my devices (HD, CD & DVD) are connected via sii0680ide.device. They are all set to UDMA5 mode.

I have: "ahi.device 6.2c OS4 (15.Apr.05) fdtrans 51.14 (C version)... etc...". I have a SoundBlaster live.

The thing you mention about slow audio & the video slowing down to accomodate describes it perfectly

FuZion.

So Hyperion, can we please see a small update to the Radeon drivers with
overlay to? Then I would be so happy..

You're asking the wrong people. :)

And it's being worked on as time allows. Time for this stuff has not been abundant recently, we'll get back on it as soon as we can, but a lot of work on overlay has already been done.

I raised exactly the same issue some years ago about another mediaplayer whose name excapes me now, and it was for MOS...

Is it not possible to do the liba52 code as a patch to avcodec.library?

Even if it was, it's possibly too late for that. While I agree that using the liba52 stuff would make the avcodec.library GPLed, if the statement of liba52 being statically linked to avcodec.library is true, I'd still want some more clarification of it affecting the DvPlayer binary.

Statically linked things are one thing, dynamically linked things are another, and shared dynamically linked libraried yet a third thing. I don't know what kind of dynamic linking this is, but there have been ways around such issues - see Nvidia's closed-source graphics drivers working in Linux kernel as an example... I don't know exactly what roundabouts Nvidia goes through, but they have legal proprietary components in there somewhere. I suspect it has some sort of LGPL divider in the middle, but don't understand it enough to bet anything on my assumption, or if that situation is directly comparable to the DvPlayer stuff.

It might have been neat to do a seperate shared library with liba52 and any other GPL things, and then whatever he could close-source in avcodec.library, and then just have avcodec.library able to make use of the liba52/GPL shared library if present for those particular things, to help maintain a consistent interface from whatever uses avcodec.library and liba52.library, as the API to each of those could be different and avcodec.library could wrap or translate to the common API.

I don't know that I understand the issues of dynamic linking shared libraries which are GPLed affecting a binary that makes use of said libraries. It sounds like a lawyer was queried on this stuff, I saw some mention of FSF somewhere but couldn't tell if that meant an FSF lawyer was queried or not, who supposedly said everything was fine. I hope to see this stated more solidly soon, as I missed the brief registration available period, and this sounds like a nice program. :/

it should have been taken up with the authors in private

and should have been up to them to let us know about the problem

just seems certain ppl just want to cause as much trouble as they can

@cobra

It was private, until the author asked on amiga.hu forum who sent him an unfriendly mail about DvPlayer. It just continued onto this forum, as I amongst others, don't speak hungarian very well. Actually I don't speak hungarian at all...

Anyway, it was brought out in public by the author himself, in this case. If it wasn't I'd agree with you 100%.

*sigh*

I saw this thread had exploded and thought it'd be people praising the product, or at least saying it isn't working

Is there any hope for the Amiga community? I bet the author made an honest mistake, and even if the aim was to bypass the GPL, that suggests an effort was made to work legally. A simple e-mail pointing this out would have worked fine; I expect the program would have been withdrawn ASAP. Yes, I realise that everything in that e-mail is legal and valid, but I can read between the lines as well as anyone else; I hardly think that the letter would have had the same tone had it been a MOS native application, if indeed it would have been written at all. Just that you're entitled to certain things under the law doesn't mean that its a wise idea to stretch them to the limit for such trivial acts.

I only hope that this doesn't lead to some sort of GPL vigilantiism, with people desperately searching for violations in MOS programs...

The sheer pettyness of this kind of thing is beyond belief - are some people so small minded that they'll widen the rifts in the Amigoid userbase just for the sake of point scoring?

If you take a closer look at the GPL and its followers you'll see why they hunt programs like this down. Not only in the Amiga-sphere. There are plenty of examples of this, and in this case there should've been enough alarms going off before any of this happened, IMO.

True, and thus a bit dull (I've not had time to download DVPlayer myself ),
better this GPL thing is sorted out now, than later.
My guess that it would have been a lot more messy, if the DVPlayer had went as contrib on the OS4-final CD, and then someone had discovered the GPL, or? .

The same issues were brought forth about MorphOS programs by the same people. It doesn't have to do with any war or BS like that. The issue was made public by the author himself, until then, it was a private thing (discussed on some irc channels).

You don't get the point. It's a very good product, it just has some licence issues that have to be resolved before it gets sold. Now, let's say that this didn't happen and that the author had sold 300 copies (for example) and THEN it gets known to the liba52 author, would you think that it would have a happy end? Money would have been involved, which could end up being VERY messy.

@AMiGR

But people have bought it allready
Or does this mean that the money can't be drawn from the credit cards untill the GPL is solved?

@AMiGR

But why did Piru have to threaten Cobra?
He could simply have pointed out the GPL violation and asked
Cobra to take down the software or change the archive to comply
with GPL instead of starting this ####. IMO Piru started this JUST
because it's a OS4 software!!!

Just read what he wrote in the email, he gives a link to it himself
on ANN.lu.

Dunno, but still the number must have been small.
