Eh, you are aware that "someone" had been withholding MorphOS releases for a very long time. The first thing they did when that got resolved was to make a MorphOS release that includes all licence information, to solve all these issues.

>MorphOS's ixemul.library wasn't available in source (sic!) code for some time,
>and I know of people who asked to get the source code and didn't get it.

However, when I worked out that I did indeed have the MorphOS ixemul binary as part of my MorphOS CD, I requested sources, and received a reply (from BBRV, no less :) within hours, and the sources within less than two days.

You may very well know people who fared worse, but as far as *I* can see this particular case, there was no problem whatsoever receiving the sources.

But shouldn't he get the sources of GPL version to compile the same exe he downloaded earlier ?

I would say that if Piru or anyone else (myself included) insisted they have the right to the sources of DvPlayer now I would question their morality. The FSF is about freedom (see the first 'F') and the GPL-only sources are still free. The campaign to free the GPL sources and keep them free was successful. Anything beyond that is pure personal greed in my opinion.

@all
The viral-like aspect of the GPL has been discussed to death outside of our microcosm (see www.google.com for details) and no final decision has been made on this aspect. In fact, the FSF is currently leaning towards loosening up that part of the GPL in the next revision but time will tell if that becomes a reality. You'll find plenty of documentation and disagreements on this aspect of the GPL ad nauseum. Although discussing such things here is somehow fun for some I would encourage anyone who is really interested in software freedom to join the various serious discussions outside of AW.net. Software freedom is very important and there is plenty you can do to help out. Commercial interests are attacking the foundation of software freedom via your governments right now (changes to copyright law, changes to patent law, etc.) so if you really care, get really active and make your voices heard.

Back on topic..
I purchased DvPlayer, downloaded the latest (GPL free) avcodec.library and DvPlayer is a great effort and very slick. Still has a few rough edges but compared to every other player for Amigas out there I'm impressed how often it doesn't just crash when given bad data. It can only get better.

@COBRA

"The documentation in the avcodec.library archive that was available at the time of the DvPlayer release had no mention of any GPL code in there."

Have you asked copyright holder and/or FSF about their opinnion/advice of how to handle the unfortunate situation.

What features exactly did we lose, if any, with the new library?

May I just ask a question when GPL is discussed much here.

I'm working on a game which uses SDL and SDL-Net which both is LGPL if I'm not wrong.
Can I later release my game under some other license to be able to make money of it or if I don't want to release my code?

the game is going to be similar to X-Com.

It's great to see how many people are readily saying that DvPlayer is in violation.

Yes, it is great that some people feel that GPL'd code should be protected.

Quote:
FWIW, only a real lawyer can tell you that, not any armchar lawyer that has a copy of GPL.txt.
Only the copyright holder of the code can tell you that. No lawyer necessary unless the license holder feels there has been a violation, in which case he/she can begin proceedings.

Quote:
If people are concerned about potential GPL violations, they should report it to the FSF and be done with it. Then, a real lawyer can look at it and say yes or no.
Why should they report it to the FSF if the FSF is not the copyright holder? It even says right here on the GNU website to contact the copyright holder:

"Once you have collected the details, you should send a precise report to the copyright holder of the packages that are being misused. The copyright holder is the one who is legally authorized to take action to enforce the license."

Quote:
Anything else ("DvPlayer is illegal") is just slandering.

It's only libel if it's NOT true. ("slander" is spoken, not written)

It's odd that Hyperion, a software development house, is not only apparently unfamiliar with the GPL but seems to consider the protection it offers open source programmers a "threat".

With the current, static AmigaOS4 SDL link libraries you can't use SDL (if you would do that your code would become LGPL as well and you'd have to release the sources).
But as soon as there are shared SDL libraries (SDL.library, SDL-Net.library, ...) for AmigaOS4 you can use the shared SDL libraries in non-LGPL software as well.

@sundown

We lost AC3 decoding. Meaning most DVD's will be quiet!

Unless they have MPEG audio (mostly very old DVD's before DD was
chosen as default sound) or PCM. 2ch PCM is popular on music DVD's.

@Samwell

Doesn't GPL mean that people are free to build their own avcodec.library including the AC3 codec part.

Yes it does. But as long as avcodec.library's source isn't available
this is not possible.

@Samwel

It can not be illegal for avcodec.library author to publish the GPL using version. Right?

And for sanity, every avcodec.library using SW should not morph to GPL SW because of that. But if they are forced into GPL "mode" because of that...

@Samwel:

You can check out all of my changes from the original CVS.

Check out mplayerhq.hu website's main page and search for "amigaos" string.

Yes. If I make a binary interface and you make one that is compatible and under GPL, that doesn't mean my binary interface is suddenly in violation of GPL. That would just be silly. Because it would then be just a matter of reverse engineering some tiny dll in Windows and replace it with a GPL version and start suing... Surely this is not the intent of the GPL authors.

@Samwel

Well, that explains why the I had no luck getting sound to work on the demo version of DVPlayer I downloaded last night.

Any news on when AC3 playback is going to be brought back to us? Indeed, is it going to be possible?

You need another one to play when the computer is actually ready to use.
Maybe add more for malfunctions and then we'll have music all day.

too many games,
maybe some should start checking all the files in the blue camp and see how many are GPL material??
