posted by Crisot on 21-Aug-2005 19:45:17 (29142 reads)
Asked by Hyperion, this is a video showing a new feature natively supported by the intuition.library, and some other stuffs.

http://uniweb.free.fr/os4videos/os4intuition.avi

you need a player able to replay xvid codec (dvplayer, mplayer...)

This is amazing how you people can get so much excited with such a little useful feature :) It's funny, reminds of the past, but.. hem hem.. And it's also possible in MOS with Dragon. Anyway, this is amigaworld.net, so that explains the particular nostalgia in all that surrounds the Amiga name :)

There's some funcionality like drag and drop over screens that doesn't appear to be present on Dragon that somehow gives it more usefulness that in the past...

No, I've missed that. Thanks!!!

Totaly stunning... I think it's very unlikely that another OS is close to be this fast... conciderig the HW it's running on. There is no need for me to have it faster... yet

heh , maybe you should just wait with the complaints until you have actually tried it?

I've seen the video, and will try soon on my setup, but I can make som "wild" guesses from what I'd seen

But I guess added value would have to be put (on dragon) before this feauture becomes usefull (like each border allowing to see a diferent screen), but hey... let's stop here, for the sake of not being "Amiga like"

Quote:
It can actually drag left/right as well, like the old AGA, when the screen behind is smaller than the viewport.

BTW, I never seen the screen being draggen horizontally on my Amiga, at least not as in "click in a delibered place (bar) and drag it" like the metaphor implies, automatic panning I'd seen though...

just because you happen to ignore Amiga doesn't mean that we have to do the same.

i suggest that you return to your unhappy and unexcited place since there is so much happyness on Amigaworld and ofcourse of the Amiga name which you obviously can't stand.

or something

Are you being rude or what?

@Crisot

Great video!

I take it the draggable screens is something just the beta testers have right now? At least last time I tried it, and I have the Intuition update released for the themes installed, I still couldn't drag them.

And I just could not help but think "two more weeks" when I saw the bit at the end.

credit for this feature goes to Massimo Tantignone. He's doing intuition, and as you can see, does a marvelous job at it.

Wow... the screen-dragging comeback !

Thanks to Massimo and all those that make this thing a reality...

R.I.P. custom chips! This is the final nail in the custom chips' coffin. They are now totally unnecessary.

Very impressive!

the reaction may seem a bit "over the top", but this is a site for fans of amiga, so why the surprise? who ELSE would get excited about this???

I have yet to feel any exceitment over Windows. I feel happy about linux because some of it is very fun (while other parts are just weird), but only amigaOS ever made me truly excited about using a computer. the closest i've come is using AfterEffect (which was created on MACs first and then ported to windows), but that's a special program that i'm sure no one on this site but me has ever used (well, maybe a couple of others).

and one of the truly cool things only amigas could do was screen drag. and, yes, it CAN be useful. sometimes just being able to show off to people who have windows is the purpose. I once just TOLD a guy about it - i didn't have my amiga there - and he was impressed with the IDEA of it.

the fact that a programmer took the time to make this possible is a cause for celebration. so, don't be a buzzkill
ka?

At least in the video I did not see that. What one can see is some wb icons being dragged on an application icon on the wb screen which then pops up a requester on the paint program screen.

That's an appicon of a program on the workbench screen. Dragging files on the appicon load them into the application which is on the other screen halfway down.

Wo - I finally got there; had to download Ryu's 20Mb mpg version, as QT7 on this Mac mini doesn't seem to like something about the avi file...

Was it worth it? Hell yes! You betcha

That reminded me of some of the comments I've heard from Windows users.
like trying to explain the good thing with not needing to have the active window on top:
"What is it good for?" We're doing fine without that feature etc.

The excitement comes due to the fact that untill now it was said to be impossible to do screen dragging with modern gfx-cards.

@Chunder

Get VLC from videolan.org - that'll handle most of what you can throw at it and is nicely ported to OS X.

Hi Taoks,

I was going to say, if you're going to rain, do it somewhere else where we'll never know about it, like a file on your hard drive made with the "ed" command, but your's works good too.

Hi mahen,

Ever see the "Dance Monkeyboy" video of steve ballmer? and he THINKS his OS has features, just imagine if IT REALLY DID! !!!!

Oh, and, it's ONLY NOT useful, UNTIL you GET IT!

(Like when bill gates says, oh look, we've added this to windross...like say, iPod functionality.)

Hi Georg,

Watch it again, and again, and again.....

It's an mpeg playing, and he dargs it from a back screen to a front one.

I noticed THAT first play through.

THAT WAS SOOOOOOOO COOOOLLLLL!!!!!!!!

!!!!!!!!(micro)AMIGA(One) --- AOS(4.) --- BLOODY RULES!!!!!!!!

P.S.

Hi Excalibur,

NO!!!!!

No, no, no no, NO!!!!

You were supposed to say it IS there, there's this ONE PIXEL on the title bar that you have to click and drag on for that feature, and IT CHANGES RANDOMLY EVERY HALF AN HOUR!!!!!!!!!!

Hey DWolfman,

Found it yet???
