   posted by Crisot on 21-Aug-2005 19:45:17 (29128 reads)
Asked by Hyperion, this is a video showing a new feature natively supported by the intuition.library, and some other stuffs.

http://uniweb.free.fr/os4videos/os4intuition.avi

you need a player able to replay xvid codec (dvplayer, mplayer...)

@mr_homm

Thanks for the booze but credit for this feature goes to Massimo Tantignone. He's doing intuition, and as you can see, does a marvelous job at it.

This is amazing how you people can get so much excited with such a little useful feature :) It's funny, reminds of the past, but.. hem hem.. And it's also possible in MOS with Dragon. Anyway, this is amigaworld.net, so that explains the particular nostalgia in all that surrounds the Amiga name :)

First the themes and now this...

I will try to be very clear about this: Give...me...some...hardware!

Phew, good thing that the new microA1 batch soon is here.

@mahen

I think it's the cumulative effect of the whole thing kicking in every time something new is added. At least that's how it works for me

@ Mahen

Don't agree. It's very useful since it brings the ability to see something running in the backgound (3D rendering for example) in only a mouse movement.

And it's important to keep at a high degree the concept of multiple display contexts. Everybody tries to catch up in this area, but i think the Amiga is always in front (!!).

@xtergo

Have you seen Crisot earlier OS4 video demonstrating Petunia? It's blisteringly fast http://os4depot.net/showfile/?file=video/media/os4bt-march2005.avi

@mahen

From the Dragon's FAQs:

-----
Can you make it stick like screen dragging did on AGA? Please please please??

No. Simply put, it's too hard. Amiga hardware used custom chips to do that, something that's not really possible in graphics cards, at least not without some huge changes in Intuition. Sorry but no.
-----

For what I could see in the OS4 video, Massimo Tantiglione did the necessary changes in Intuition. So no, the two solutions are not the same and have not the same usefulness.

*plays with horizontal dragging* mmh... no... it doesnt look uncool.

Is that with Dragon? If the screen dragging is undone (screens don't stay where they where dragged to) once you release mouse button it is not really windows-like. So you don't really get into MDI-like situation. And it doesn't become uncool.

Hope this won't be at cost of speed...

Not at all. OS4 is still as fast as a very fast thing thats in a hurry.

How long does a halfway modern gfx card more or less take to hw (screen) blit an area of say 1024x768x32bpp?

I've not tested that resolution, but the Radeon 7000 AGP I've got in my A1 can blit a 640x480 16bit bitmap at 1500 blits/second. This would in theory give about 290 blits/second (or 3.5ms/blit) for the size and resolution you asked about.

@Georg

Yes this was with Dragon.

Btw we made some tests and blitting 1024x768x32bpp at 1000 fps was piece of cake on my setup (Radeon 9200SE). Gfx cards are really fast today. Only major bottleneck is pixel format conversion if screens have different depths and/or screen bitmaps are in fast ram.

mahen:

just because you happen to ignore Amiga doesn't mean that we have to do the same.

i suggest that you return to your unhappy and unexcited place since there is so much happyness on Amigaworld and ofcourse of the Amiga name which you obviously can't stand.

or something
