Software News   Software News : MorphOS 1.4.5 Free Edition for Phase5 PPC boards available
posted by tokai on 24-Aug-2005 20:52:33 (20173 reads)
24th August, 2005 - The MorphOS development team would like to celebrate the five year anniversary of the first ever publically available MorphOS release by announcing the immediate availability of MorphOS 1.4.5 Free Edition for PowerUP accelerators by phase5 & DCE.

Update: MorphOS 3D Update pack now available. "This pack brings Warp3D and OpenGL(R) API compatibility to a whole new range of hardware including 3dfx Voodoo and ATI Radeon."

By releasing the latest end user version of MorphOS for PowerPC-equipped Commodore A1200, A3000 and A4000 computers, the OS is brought back to its origins. Prior to creating versions for the bPlan PEGASOS and various embedded hardware platforms, development started out on the forementioned computers by Commodore Business Machines and resulted in a first beta version to be released in August 2000.

For information about supported hardware configurations, installation instructions and the actual download location, please visit

http://powerup.morphos-team.net

Please note that the MorphOS Development Team is unable to provide direct end user support for this specific version of MorphOS. If you encounter any problems, please use the PowerUP forum on MorphZone to ask for help and support.

http://www.morphzone.org/modules/newbb_plus/viewforum.php?forum=42

We sincerely hope you enjoy the Free Edition of MorphOS 1.4.5 and would like to welcome you soon as regulars on a MorphOS community website.

Thank you for your interest,
The MorphOS Development Team

Why wouldnt it?

Oh and as it happens I have a CSPPC A4000 and a BPPC A1200. I happened to test MOS on my A1200, which I betatest OS4 on most of the time

Ah, I didn't know that - I assumed that you had OS4 on an A1, and that's why I said it wasn't a fair comparison, G3/G4 vs 401/403 is kindof one-sided

No. It's to check how MorphOS arrived over here. Seems all the "MOS is teh evil!" guys are gone now? Huh

How would this be possible when the admin says they prune the user-db every year? See also http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=1025&forum=6 here and http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=14603&forum=6&start=16&viewmode=flat&order=0 here.

@Opi:
What I don't understand is: there was already support for PicassoIV, CV64 and such cards.
This means the drivers, the chip specific code is already there and implemented and working in CGX.
It shouldn't be that difficult to re-compile it ppc-native for MorphOS.
Look at AmigaOS4: there PicassoIV is working out of the box even with the 68k-driver.

In earlier versions, 68k CGX drivers worked. Much has changed since then, they need to be updated to work.

Cool that it's out now. Unfortunately I've written off updating the classic hardware to PPC. A mac mini port would be cool though, there's going to be a bit of orphaned PPC Macs available in the future.

You didn't? Heretic 2 made me upgrade to 64mbs. Later I added 96.

What are you talking about? Since I started to visit this site about 2 years ago I
have maybe seen one or two persons that REALLY dislike MOS. Most have actually
been indifferent or disliked BBRV. Most of us actually wish MOS all the best but
we're not interrested in it. It's OS4 for us, that's why we are here and not in ANN.lu
or MorphZone all the time.

I have seen many MOS users talking #### about OS4 or Eyetech/A1 on ANN, amiga.org
or even somewhat on MorphZone but here on amigaworld.net there is not much
of that which is nice. But most of those people don't like when they are told that they
can't talk skit anymore so they go to ANN.lu and talk about how bad amigaworld.net
is.

If a users logs in he gets another few months before thrown out
Some logs on just to answer polls and such.

I don't see your point the user base is cleaned of inactive accounts, so if you login your account is marked as last logged in and the clean function will ignore you. just because you don't post doesn't mean your not active.

Back when I actually ran a classic, I even used OS3.x workbench rather than either Dopey Mag or Scalos due to speed and stability over 'enhanced' feature set. (I still have my Aliendesign Scalos key somewhere.....that's how long I used Scalos for and it never was stable enough to use in preference to the alternatives.)

Agreed one of the great things about the Amiga community is that we have quite a few choices. Scalos is activily being worked on and DOpus Magellan for OS4 as well.

However at this stage there are even MOS users who prefer to emulate Workbench 3.x on top of MorphOS instead of using its native Ambient solution.

Workbench is good choise for low end systems (i.e. PowerUP Amigas) and many of us have used Workbench how long? Over 10, 15, 20 years?

On the other hand there are many AmigaOS users who replaced their Workbench by Scalos or Magellan II. Nobody cant please everybody

@mikeb:

everyone knows ambient is _far away_ from a perfect desktop, no need to repeat it all the time, else someone could think you're trolling. ;)

I don't think that's the case, there have been lots of MorphOS reviews and mostly these neglected or de-emphasized some the the system's key shortcomings, IMO resulting in possible unrealistic consumer expectations. IMO shoving such facts underneath the carpet is the worst thing the community could do.

The only really objective review I can think of is Eugenia's review for OSNews. She told me that due to the lack of a natice TCP/IP stack, stability issues and other issues the OS cannot in any regard be considered a viable OS for ordinary consumers.

Also MorphOS 1.4 since its release more than 2 years ago, the system has seen little progress and development tools are lagging behind considerably. This doesn't provide people with much confidence.

Don't get me wrong I *want* MorphOS to develop into a more serious solution. I was involved in getting Eugenia a Pegasos and I pushed Eugenia to have a look at the updates.
