Software News   Software News : MorphOS 1.4.5 Free Edition for Phase5 PPC boards available
posted by tokai on 24-Aug-2005 20:52:33 (20156 reads)
24th August, 2005 - The MorphOS development team would like to celebrate the five year anniversary of the first ever publically available MorphOS release by announcing the immediate availability of MorphOS 1.4.5 Free Edition for PowerUP accelerators by phase5 & DCE.

Update: MorphOS 3D Update pack now available. "This pack brings Warp3D and OpenGL(R) API compatibility to a whole new range of hardware including 3dfx Voodoo and ATI Radeon."

By releasing the latest end user version of MorphOS for PowerPC-equipped Commodore A1200, A3000 and A4000 computers, the OS is brought back to its origins. Prior to creating versions for the bPlan PEGASOS and various embedded hardware platforms, development started out on the forementioned computers by Commodore Business Machines and resulted in a first beta version to be released in August 2000.

For information about supported hardware configurations, installation instructions and the actual download location, please visit

http://powerup.morphos-team.net

Please note that the MorphOS Development Team is unable to provide direct end user support for this specific version of MorphOS. If you encounter any problems, please use the PowerUP forum on MorphZone to ask for help and support.

http://www.morphzone.org/modules/newbb_plus/viewforum.php?forum=42

We sincerely hope you enjoy the Free Edition of MorphOS 1.4.5 and would like to welcome you soon as regulars on a MorphOS community website.

Thank you for your interest,
The MorphOS Development Team

@ Victim

And was the CyberstormPPC video the #AmigaZeux team released in reply to Ryu's AmigaOS4 demonstration on the BlizzardPPC a fake? Unlike what this video showed (Pegasos1-like perfomance!), I have only read reports of people getting not so good performance so far.

One reason I ask is because BBRV confused a lot of people in the past, by having pictures taken at an Amiga event of his PowerMac alledgedly running MorphOS, which turned out to be showing nothing else than a MorphOS logo on a MacOS X desktop...

@MikeB

It wasnt a fake but it was using light MUI settings. I used to run Ambient on my PowerUp system, too (1.4.5 PowerUp version is overloaded with alpha blending and other secondary stuff, no doubt).

For this BBRV allegation you can probably provide a link for assertion?

Amiga.org removed the picture from their gallery, maybe because it was faked/confusing (the laptop at least).

But here some comments from Amiga.org back then to show I am talking the truth with regard to the confusion:

Budda: "I never saw that ultra slim laptop on top of the microwave. What is it running? Is it just Windows or Linux with a MOS backdrop?"

strobe: "That's a Titanium Powerbook."

Sadly they even confused your's truly...

From OSNews:

MikeB: "Here's a nice show picture of an Apple Titanium PowerBook and MicroWave ;) running MorphOS"

I don't think that's the case, there have been lots of MorphOS reviews and mostly these neglected or de-emphasized some the the system's key shortcomings, IMO resulting in possible unrealistic consumer expectations. IMO shoving such facts underneath the carpet is the worst thing the community could do.

Still I think Ambient is one of the most advanced solutions around. No solution available is perfect, Scalos is buggy as well, WorkBench even in OS4 lacks a few things Ambient has for ages. The _truly great_ thing in MOS is that you have a choice, and replace Ambient with almost anything you like See the good side of it

Ah okay. I never could figure out who was better, Mr. Fleecy or BBRV. That laptop was indeed meant to intentionally confuse crowd. People see what they want to see.

Agreed, waiting for Magellan for AmigaOS4 myself. (Hope to see an OS4 native version of Scalos as well, when the full release is done)

And that is precisely why BBRV gets under my skin - he loves playing mind games and messing with people. Remember how he would make 99% of his announcements on a Friday and often intentionally word them controversially, so that there would be mile-long threads during the weekend? Say what you want about Amiga Inc, but I much prefer their hopeless optimism and downright business incompetence over BBRV's used car salesman / circus host schpiel.

@ CodeSmith

Personally I have no problem with BBRV playing funny PegPong games (such as Pegasos as an Atari, though Atari may not like such PegPong games) over at MorphZone, as long as he keeps to his business.

Disable all the wierd MUI settings and you'll get very decent performance. Gradients and alpha stuff especially. Gradients were never optimized nor tested on PowerUP cards by Stunzi.

Some prefer to focuss on personalities and politics, others prefer to focuss on actual products and/or services. (or a mix) So the only person able to answer your question is you yourself.

same here. I am only interested in what WE do, what those of us who really care about all-things-amiga (every flavor).

I'm happy to see this development. people are hard at work.

as to BBRV and others like them, word to the wise: don't do business with immoral people.
the end.

This one really deserves it's own news item - significant update to MorphOS.

I guess if you were a MorphOS user through the past year or so, you would have also spotted other significant updates to MOS core components from the developers...didn't seem like development slowed down at all. Most of it was just whinging for the mystical MOS 1.5

I havn't really been keeping track of MorphOS but has there been any mention of the Port to Mac hardware?

getting a PPC amiga compatible OS on some of the older mac hardware would be great for everybody, you can get a biege G3 for £10 on ebay (i have 6 spare G3 233 desktops (rev A) and a few other old world PPC macs, i would donate a few to the morphos team if it would do any good). Even if they only supported the beige G3s it would allow the amiga comunity(s) access to some cheap hardware to start developing, support for higher spec macs could come later.

Sorry if this has been discussed somewhere else before, as i said i havnt been keeping track.

Well try as I might, I cannot get this blasted thing to boot. Well tell a lie, I did manage to get it to boot once, and it didn't seem to be half bad - a big improvement over 0.4d. However, since that one magical boot, I have unsucessfully spent 5 hours attempting to get it going again to no avail.

If anyone at all has anything useful on how to get this blooming thing running on an A4000 PPC+CV booting from UWSCSI HD let me know how, since it obviously just doesn't like playing ball here. I've looked on the "MZ" foums, and they are about as helpful as a slap in the face with a wet fish - but to be honest I have just about had it with all the resetlevels and dela times none of which seem to be helping any.
