Software News   Software News : MorphOS 1.4.5 Free Edition for Phase5 PPC boards available
   posted by tokai on 24-Aug-2005 20:52:33 (20168 reads)
24th August, 2005 - The MorphOS development team would like to celebrate the five year anniversary of the first ever publically available MorphOS release by announcing the immediate availability of MorphOS 1.4.5 Free Edition for PowerUP accelerators by phase5 & DCE.

Update: MorphOS 3D Update pack now available. "This pack brings Warp3D and OpenGL(R) API compatibility to a whole new range of hardware including 3dfx Voodoo and ATI Radeon."

By releasing the latest end user version of MorphOS for PowerPC-equipped Commodore A1200, A3000 and A4000 computers, the OS is brought back to its origins. Prior to creating versions for the bPlan PEGASOS and various embedded hardware platforms, development started out on the forementioned computers by Commodore Business Machines and resulted in a first beta version to be released in August 2000.

For information about supported hardware configurations, installation instructions and the actual download location, please visit

http://powerup.morphos-team.net

Please note that the MorphOS Development Team is unable to provide direct end user support for this specific version of MorphOS. If you encounter any problems, please use the PowerUP forum on MorphZone to ask for help and support.

http://www.morphzone.org/modules/newbb_plus/viewforum.php?forum=42

We sincerely hope you enjoy the Free Edition of MorphOS 1.4.5 and would like to welcome you soon as regulars on a MorphOS community website.

Thank you for your interest,
The MorphOS Development Team

I got it to work, slight error on my part with the startup-sequence.

I'll hold back on commenting for now.

Nooo.. please at least tell us, how the overall feel differs or not with AOS4 beta? Which one is smoother with basic desktop usage?

Unless Ryu's got a CSPPC version of OS4 it wouldn't be a fair comparison anyway...

@Ryu

You big tease you....

Would this be your first ever usage of MorphOS?

Be very cool to hear your opinions...it always took me a long time on a first install (whether MOS or OS3.9) to get up to usablity (various classes, programs etc.)

From what I saw of a year old beta of OS4 on tekmage's 4000PPC, it looked cool but it's a long time since I ran MOS 0.4+ on my CSPPC.

Wish I had my 4000PPC tower to try it....had the money set aside to buy both Classic MOS and Classic OS4 at one point - sadly those days are long gone

@CodeSmith

Why wouldnt it?

Oh and as it happens I have a CSPPC A4000 and a BPPC A1200. I happened to test MOS on my A1200, which I betatest OS4 on most of the time

@JKD

Nope this isnt the first time Ive used MorphOS. I last had a good play with a MOS machine at the Benelux show back in err 2003. Back then my opinion was one of "well this is all very nice, but err... it doesnt feel right".

I would love to comment on how it feels, but so far I've been mucking about with resetlevels and delays for about two hours and I've yet to see it boot into Ambient.
After it resets it just does nothing at all. I did get an older version going on the same hardware, so I guess it's just a question of hitting the "magic combo".
Right now I'm rather fed up with rebooting though

WOW!

This really is something that I would not have expected to happen in the era of BBRV & RalphS.

( at the same time it is "good" timing to take away some AOS4 sales? )

Aggressive post, flamebait, first there is no indication per se of a problem with the person you mentioned, second it is not an excuse to go off topic. Take it up with kimmok in private message.

Are you joking? Not with this limited hardware support.

Moderated for upping the ante

@Thread

Sadly i have only a 060 on my classic, if i had a BlizzardPPC i could give it a try, my classic is collecting dust.

This is a good release. Many old amigans have been abandoned
when both MorphOS and AmigaOS4 set for newer platforms. They
were promised both MOS and OS4 on their classic PPC Amigas and
got only very old MOS beta, or waiting for years (OS4).

Have a good time with MorphOS!

I was all ready about to download it... I can finally give MorphOS a try and compare it with AmigaOS 4. After all, there's no way my Amiga can't run it.. right? Right?

Oh dear. Hardware requirements basically seem to say you need a G-Rex (which I can't use and don't own) or a CVPPC (which I sold 6 months or so ago). I have a fully working Voodoo III in my Prometheus but they only support two graphics cards solutions?

Guess I won't be trying MorphOS after all.. back to developing AmigaOS 4 for me....

I imagine I'm not the only one in this boat, too.... hopefully the MOS team will realise that by restricting drivers they're largely restricting their own developer base.

get the classic hardware or buy a pegasos. It's your choice. Be happy to download it for free of charge.. Since AmigaOS4 will cost $$$ ...

What do you expect from free Amiga software?
Besides, Elbox (Mediator) have never been very
open towards other companies and software..
