Software News   Software News : MorphOS 1.4.5 Free Edition for Phase5 PPC boards available
   posted by tokai on 24-Aug-2005 20:52:33 (20171 reads)
24th August, 2005 - The MorphOS development team would like to celebrate the five year anniversary of the first ever publically available MorphOS release by announcing the immediate availability of MorphOS 1.4.5 Free Edition for PowerUP accelerators by phase5 & DCE.

Update: MorphOS 3D Update pack now available. "This pack brings Warp3D and OpenGL(R) API compatibility to a whole new range of hardware including 3dfx Voodoo and ATI Radeon."

By releasing the latest end user version of MorphOS for PowerPC-equipped Commodore A1200, A3000 and A4000 computers, the OS is brought back to its origins. Prior to creating versions for the bPlan PEGASOS and various embedded hardware platforms, development started out on the forementioned computers by Commodore Business Machines and resulted in a first beta version to be released in August 2000.

For information about supported hardware configurations, installation instructions and the actual download location, please visit

http://powerup.morphos-team.net

Please note that the MorphOS Development Team is unable to provide direct end user support for this specific version of MorphOS. If you encounter any problems, please use the PowerUP forum on MorphZone to ask for help and support.

http://www.morphzone.org/modules/newbb_plus/viewforum.php?forum=42

We sincerely hope you enjoy the Free Edition of MorphOS 1.4.5 and would like to welcome you soon as regulars on a MorphOS community website.

Thank you for your interest,
The MorphOS Development Team

I don't expect anything from free software.

Thats why it doesn't disappoint me and why I prefer commercial software.

Not saying that commercial software doesn't disappoint me sometimes but at least I can feel justified in my sentiments!

Good for you. I suppose you have banned OS4Depot and Aminet
in your firewall?.. :)

And like Mr Calibra said, the correct term would be free of charge.
I stand corrected.

@realize

I think Ralph had been very clear that MOS for classic will not appear.

On the other hand ... perhaps he meant: with AGA support.

Moderated by Wiffy - Offtopic reply to flamebait.

In the end. Free MOS is very good news for DCE/Phase5 customers.

Why on earth you folks can't discuss MorphOS without baiting each other, flaming each other, going off topic to make derogatory remarks etc and even I see taking the pee out of each other I don't know. Thats firstly a forum thread and now this news item.

I don't find it admirable, and its rather offputting for carrying MorphOS on a specific mutation of a classic-Amiga hardware 'news and discussion' in future. Seems that to some its a rallying call to act like children, to others an opportunity to bait.

There are a Terms and Policy to the left, if you can't discuss it civilly then please feel free to bugger off.

In fact I've just put it to the staff as to whether or not they want to carry on having to monitor MorphOS on classic Amiga 'mutation' threads so closely as it seems to attract the more juvenile rule breakers en masse OR to cover it with only 'no comments allowed' items OR just disavow it completely.

If you want to see further coverage, then act like adults. If you don't want further coverage continue on in the direction you are.

I'd prefer you did the former.

@Ryu:

I would advice you that don't compare it to OS4 classic version, you are under beta test NDA, it can be easily breached with such comparsion.

Too bad that this MOS release is not working on CV64, I would give it a try to check the speed... Maybe next release.

@Wiffy
It seems that all the children/trolls have moved from ANN to here. At least thats the only explanation I can think of, since the exact same identical thread on ANN had not one piece of flame bait, or any negative remarks at all actually.

Personally I think it is good news, as it should give a new lease of life to incredibly outdated hardware like the A1200. (BTW, I count the A1 & Pegasos as just "slightly out of date":^)

It might even promote better relations between MOS & OS4: Current & future AmigaOne owners won't need to buy a Pegasos to run MOS, as they can use their old A1200/etc. (If OS4 is released for A1200/etc, then the reverse argument also applies, for those who already own a Pegasos.)

Man I want this for my AmigaOne, which is to say I don't want Linux or Windows but would love to dual boot OS4 with this.

The only reason I never got a Peg was I didn't want to give money to Genisis I didn't like the vibe I got from them when reading anything, and no I don't go on first impressions and I don't want to start a flame war. I would buy this and wouldn't think twice about buying it either if a uA1 version came out.

I think the developers of this OS are some of the top programemrs around (and the OS4 devs too )

SO to the developers I say get version 1.5 working on AmigaOnes and Classics too as start earning some money.

Whats worse is that one of the worst stirrers in the thread has admitted that they have left the scene and is just coming here to troll.

How sad is that?

Very disappointing that PicassoIV and all those older cards are not supported.
Seems for me, that they want do increase GRex and B/CVision sales with this release.

Yeah, it's thier personal, evil agenda. That, or all developers who owned classical release had such hardware, thus only this HW is supported. Go, complain to Elbox and others for lack of support. You get it for free. If you want to use it, throw few euro and get yourself supported gfx card off eBay.

I'm gonna install it on my 1200 tower this weekend I think.
Will be nice to actually play around with it.

Cheers to all involved in releasing MorphOS for Classics.
Pint(s),well, paypal donation, if I get it working and I like it, to ya all.

Good news for Classic Users, but only that MOS is avaible on the Classic PPC lines, no one can expect that Quake3 runs on such old Hardware.

I hope that OS4 is getting final this year so that classic users can use the whole range of Software (from OS3.9 to OS4 and MOS)...
