Software News   Software News : MorphOS 1.4.5 Free Edition for Phase5 PPC boards available
   posted by tokai on 24-Aug-2005 20:52:33 (20166 reads)
24th August, 2005 - The MorphOS development team would like to celebrate the five year anniversary of the first ever publically available MorphOS release by announcing the immediate availability of MorphOS 1.4.5 Free Edition for PowerUP accelerators by phase5 & DCE.

Update: MorphOS 3D Update pack now available. "This pack brings Warp3D and OpenGL(R) API compatibility to a whole new range of hardware including 3dfx Voodoo and ATI Radeon."

By releasing the latest end user version of MorphOS for PowerPC-equipped Commodore A1200, A3000 and A4000 computers, the OS is brought back to its origins. Prior to creating versions for the bPlan PEGASOS and various embedded hardware platforms, development started out on the forementioned computers by Commodore Business Machines and resulted in a first beta version to be released in August 2000.

For information about supported hardware configurations, installation instructions and the actual download location, please visit

http://powerup.morphos-team.net

Please note that the MorphOS Development Team is unable to provide direct end user support for this specific version of MorphOS. If you encounter any problems, please use the PowerUP forum on MorphZone to ask for help and support.

http://www.morphzone.org/modules/newbb_plus/viewforum.php?forum=42

We sincerely hope you enjoy the Free Edition of MorphOS 1.4.5 and would like to welcome you soon as regulars on a MorphOS community website.

Thank you for your interest,
The MorphOS Development Team

Could somebody give correct/working startup-sequence values to use with BlizzPPC?

BTW. I got some ENV: request while booting,

I'll have to investigate more...

quite funny to see that this thread(+ the other thread here on aw aswell) has more views and posts than all posts together on moszone.

so question... why are the normally "non posters" just bumping this thread ?

Or is it the fact that you have to post here because Amigaworld all of a sudden aint such an evil place anymore?

here is an example:

user: X
latest post: today at xx:xx
last post before today: 2 years ago at xx:xx.

anyway its good to see people are active again if only to bump.

Right.. seems it's not really very easy to get up and running. Things to check:

1. the huge line at the end of startup-sequence needs to end in $kickstart >NIL:
If you load it in Ed, it will get cut off.

2. Make sure you read the syntax carefully. It's looks like a bit of a double syntax.

3. Unless you have 96 MB ram, don't bother. That's the minimum requirement for some crazy reason - and probably why I only got it to reset and go no further.

Right. Back to OS4 :)

@Toaks&others

Uh...

I've even used PPCLinux with (old) KDE with 64MB...

I didn't realised that Ambient needs so much memory...Got to test anyway!

Is there other option instead of Ambient? Doc mentioned something...unnamed?

There's Scalos which IMO is far more advanced and useful than Ambient at this point. However it's still in beta state and thus quite buggy at places.

And I don't know if it will make much of a difference with regard to memory requirements.

Are you joking? Not with this limited hardware support.

Now imagine that you actually have all (and only) that hardware would it make you less of a joke?

Besides it is a good product why the hell one shouldn't a least donate? i mean, oviously not you that only had a 060, but rather the ones who *actually* find a use for it on their PPC.

@ MZ & MikeB:

Don't know if it works on PUP version of MOS, but we have our good oldtimer: Workbench!

Elena Novaretti made a setup tutorial which can be found at elena-fractals.

It is possible but you dont get much free memory. You can reduce memory usage by dropping backdrops and such. It also depends on how much you run 68k software since JIT can waste few megabytes easily.

I hope this works well for those people who have the required hardware.

Thanks to "The MorphOS Development Team" for making this software available.

I think this is really cool news for those that have the correct hardware. Unfortunately I'm not one of them.

If I had the hardware I'd be running it right next to my Amiga One with OS4.

@_PAB_

I beleive it's more to do with availability of hardware in the pool of people testing. Earlier versions of MOS Classic had far broader hardware support but also more focus from developers and a wider testing circuit.

I'll presume MorphOS team wanted to release something working and tested....although as you can see from the myriad kernel booting options, even this is non-trivial depending on the hardware configuration in the machine.

Nah, all kidding aside.. This is really cool, and a nice move to make it avalible for free. Gives most Classic PPC users something to do while they wait for AmigaOS4.

@MikeB

Glad you said 'IMO'...personally I'd take something with a fewer less features and more stability i.e. Ambient over Scalos.

Back when I actually ran a classic, I even used OS3.x workbench rather than either Dopey Mag or Scalos due to speed and stability over 'enhanced' feature set. (I still have my Aliendesign Scalos key somewhere.....that's how long I used Scalos for and it never was stable enough to use in preference to the alternatives.)

Like you said 'IMO'

Having said that...Ambient is also beta...has a few probs. with icon positioning and window refresh(sigh) but I know the guys are working on it

@Crumb

Yup. Checked for all suggested things. I guess it's just the memory requirements that got me.
Oh well.
