Software News   Software News : Battle of Wesnot for OS4
posted by afxgroup on 28-Sep-2005 23:43:23 (16818 reads)
I've successfully compiled Battle of Wesnoth.

The Battle for Wesnoth is a free, turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme, and is now available for Amiga OS4.

Fight to regain the throne of Wesnoth, of which you are the legitimate heir, or use your dread power over the Undead to dominate the land of mortals, or lead your glorious Orcish tribe to victory against the humans who dared despoil your lands … Wesnoth has many different sagas waiting to be played out. You can create your own custom units, and write your own scenarios – or even full-blown campaigns. You can also challenge your friends – or strangers – and fight multi-player epic fantasy battles.

I'll post it on my site and then on os4 depot because the archive is really big. So if os4depot's admins want to download it from my site it would be really appreciated..

to run it (for now):

Assign USR: YourPath:path_where_wesnoth_exec_is
run wesnoth

f.e.
assign USr: DH2:Wesnoth
run wesnoth

When it starts, it is a little bit slow. so don't worry for the black screen. It has many options that can be passed to the command line. So a Gui (DANIEEEELLLL!!!) it is needed as usual..

Enjoy

Sorry but I can't get any sense out of SnoopDog just now. I keep getting a message like this

env lock envarc:weather read fail

on a continious basis. I have no assigns, no program, nothing in Prefs relating to "weather" and yet my system keeps looking for it.

till i find an answer to that i can't even get a log. HELP

ace

@afxgroup

maybe you could get in touch with the official site in order to mention the AmigaOS port and the download link (and may be merge your changes into the source tree ?).

That would be cool to keep the Amiga in people minds.

BTW really good work

i have touch no great things for this port. the code is really clean. no warning. nothing.
However i've contacted the game authors. they add the official port on the site

for the game problem, i have this in my A1:

ASSIGN USR: DH2:/Wesnoth/Wesnoth/
and then
cd DH2:/Wesnoth/Wesnoth
run wesnoth

there are 2 dir wesnoth but you can use only one. just modify the assign. nothing else. I don't know if rar has create problem (like protect +e problem)
look for the protection bits of all files

@acefnq

That'll be Wet, but you shouldn't get loads of those, and it doesn't directly look in ENVARC: (env-handler is responsible for that part of things). Anyway, to get rid of the message, try "makedir envarc:weather".

Just realised it is probably the WB titlebar causing it. Temporarily remove any env-vars from it and the log entries should stop.

music doesn't work because a bug on SDL_mixer. i have recompiled right now a new version of this lib and i must recompile all wesnoth. regard language. the program use the setlocale() function that doesn't work under os4 and so i must replace it.
I have patched the USR: requester. now should not be necessary.
working on it. however the english is the default language

Regards

I've been playing with it for a few hours, and also got the Windows-version, just to compare.
It works fine, except the OS4-version is a bit "sluggish" with graphics now and then, compared with the Windows-version. But no crashes, and everything (except the music) works fine

Do you have a fast pc?

It might be that on Windows, the graphics is HW accelerated...?

Could be, Radeon 9600XT 256 mb on a P4 2.8Ghz, compared with the XE with Radeon 9200 128mb.
Does the network work with multiplayer btw?
Tried to connect the games on multiplayer between the A1 and pc, did not succeed.

Hi All,

If anyone reading this thread fancies writing a short (or long) review/preview of Battle of Wesnoth for Total Amiga it would be greatly appreciated by me and our readers!

We don't have a strategy game expert on the team so someone who is really "into" this genre is bound to make a better job of a review than us!

As ever you don't need to be a journalist or a good writer, if needed we can tidy your prose before publication.

If you're interested PM me or email:
editor@totalamiga.org

Robert
