hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Decoding DTS sounds from your DVD files
   posted by Chip on 20-Oct-2005 12:41:54 (5084 reads)
I've just released the second audio decoder codec for AmigaOS4 what can be download from os4depot.

The dca.codec helps all avcodec.library using application (for example: DvPlayer) to be able to decode DTS sounds from mpeg2 streams.

The installation is very easy: copy the dca.codec file from the archive's bin directory to your libs:avcodecs dir and if you already used a player what opened it, execute an 'avail flush ' command.

Enjoy!

@Toaks

No, digital out won't output DTS/DD, since AHI and the drivers can't handle it.

@Davy:

The 7.1 mode is actually an 8-channel PCM mode. IIRC, DvPlayer can decode to that. Only the emu10kx driver supports it though.

There is a big problem with this 7.1 mode: it's 32 bit.
It would took too mutch time to convert the decoded sound sample from 16 bit 5.1 to 32 bit 7.1 and AHI would convert it back to 16 bit 5.1 for the emu10k. In this case you can forget the dvdplayback without skipping on a uA1 machine.

There could be 2 solutions for this problem:
1. Martin would add 16bit support for 7.1 modes.
2. Getting an other sound system

@Chip

Ehh.. You mean 24bit not 32bit?!?

The DVD standard does not allow for higher than 24bit 96KHz 5.1 channels.
Mostly they are 16bit 48KHz 5.1/7.1 channels though.

Is there any possibility of DvPlayer auto-sencing when AHI is set to digital out
and not decode AC3 or DTS streams and send the unchanged?
Would be great when you connect your Amiga to a multi channel amplifier.

No. As far as I know, it's 32bit.

I don't know if AHI can provide this information to the player.

Yes, AHI can provide that information. But it doesn't matter, since (again, sigh!) both AHI and the drivers can't handle non-PCM audio.

@Chip

Are we talking about the same thing here?
Sound detail is never higher than 24bit on DVD's.. Are you talking about data bits?

Can't you guys talk to Davy about this, sending DTS/AC3 directly digitally would be
prefered when playing movies through DvPlayer.

Ok. too bad!
Does eXtream handle different sound formats than PCM?
Sending DTS and Dolby Digital is prefered digitally. if you're connected to
a multi channel amplifier.

But really it must be the the players job to decide wether it's decoded or not,
would it not?

eXtream will handle it.

Ofcourse it's preferred to have DTS/DD support, but there isn't any, ok? Therefore, the player HAS to decode it.

@Davy

Good to hear! I can't wait to see eXtream
I'm sure it'll be the best thing since sliced bread
