Software News   Software News : First Screenshots of BarsnPipes for OS4
posted by ssolie on 8-Nov-2005 20:25:16 (11934 reads)
The first important step with the porting of the MIDI sequencer BarsnPipes on Amiga OS 4 is achieved - the program starts. The author would like to show the two screenshots as evidence that a successful port is now very probable:

Screenshot2

The pictograms for the graphic user interface are loaded using datatypes i.e. they can be changed by the user.

Very good news. Many thanks to Alfred.
I know he's making many Amiga OS4 users very happy.

I don't see what all the fuss is about, personally I really like that GUI. Granted the icons aren't the most beautiful ones but who cares? That prog captures the spirit of the Amiga.

It is also ironic that Microsoft bought out the Blue Ribbon company (and they certanly haven't done it in order to improve competition) then they released the source code of the Amiga version, behaving as they usually do, as if the sources were some kind of useless and worthless crap.

So, thanks to the talent of Alfred Faust, it actually looks like that Microsoft made a favour to the Amiga community!

Now imagine if we could only have the source code for programs such as DeluxePaint or Scala MM!

I'm not sure how it does it, but it seems as if it does not use REaction or whatever it is. I'd prefer a standard looking interface, rather then one that uses its own widgets etc. I dont think those picture grams are the worst thing. The whole interface is a little cluttered and looks difficult.

@pods

Well the real problem (for me) is not using system window frames,
not using 4:3 aspect correct images and lastly the heavy usage of bright
and dark colors which MUST be a strain for the eyes with long usage.

But not using system windows can be wrong on my part because reading
on Alfreds site it says he uses gadtools now. Gadtools programs should
automatically be "converted" to using Reaction in OS4 AFAIK..
Maybe just B&P uses its own color scheme for everything on the screen?!?

@thread

Btw doesn't anyone know how it stands in comparence to todays most
used software? What's good in B&P and what's lacking?

It's really great to see one of the GREAT Amiga softwares of the time get
developed again. Now just get some others going aswell

The source code was released at the time Microsoft bought the company and was a
condition of the sale. Lyle certainly can elaborate this point better, but don't credit Microsoft,
it was not their "generosity" at work here.

Thumbs up Albert!

I'm not sure how many of those who dislike the GUI have used B&P...

What really matters most is what it can do. It is by far the most powerful and flexible piece of MIDI sequencing software I've ever used, and there's many things that can be done with it on the Amiga which aren't possible even with the latest professional sequencers for Mac/PC out there.

Don't underestimate the power of the pipes (and tools)

As far as the GUI is concerned, its simplicity, contrast, clarity and amount of information visible is all I care about.
When you're recording or performing on stage, you don't necessarily have the option to stand close to the screen, and in that situation eye candies don't help at all.

Keep up the good work Albert!

A brief history of Bars&Pipes, only as accurate as an old mans memory.

Microsoft bought out the company "Blue Ribbon Soundworks", previously "Blue Ribbon Bakery", about nine or ten years ago.
Blue Ribbon was the producer of such programs as "Bars & Pipes", Bars&Pipes Professional", a LOT of accessory disks for those,
a program called "Super Jam" (great fun to play with), and an organizer program called "Who, What, When, Where"

The primary creative forces behind BlueRibbon were primarily Todor Fay and Melissa Jordan Grey(with no offense to any others creative types there)
Todor had previously worked for "Mimetics", as the primary author of "Soundscape", an incredibly powerful but difficult to master Amiga Midi package.

On moving to Seattle, Todor was instrumental in the development of "Direct Music", a part of the "Direct X" multimedia
extensions of Windows. I don't know what he's been up to lately.

When BlueRibbon was bought by Microsoft, the programs were released to the public, and the source code to B&P was graciously offered to a small group of
Amiga programmers who wanted to try and keep B&P alive and current. I was a member of that group, and so was Alfred.

I cannot say who decided to release the code, but a comment block at the head of each file indicated that they were a Microsoft release.

We were all anxious to develop it further, but from the very start Alfred seemed to be way ahead of the rest of us. He's very fast, or was at the time, anyway.

Over time, I lost track of the project, but as far as I know, Alfred has been the full-time keeper of the source, and has also done a MOS port.

When I ordered my AmigaOne, I took a try at porting Bars, but I'm a lot slower than I used to be.

There is one advantage we will have over the classic version.. Most users were limited to one each MIDI IN and OUT. There was a multiplexer that
offered three outputs, but there was no more bandwidth. The CAMD on OS4 supports USB MIDI ports.
At this moment I have Eight MIDI IN and eight MIDI OUT, each full bandwidth. With a faster processor and more MIDI I/O, the
opportunities for music, or show control, have really blossomed.

I don't know for sure if Alfred will integrate B&P with CAMD, but I have found the source for my old
CAMDIN.ptool and CAMDOUT.ptool, so we will have the connections available.

As I said in a previous post, Alfred has kept the fire burning. The fact that B&P is even available at this time is to his credit.
It's a very optimistic happening for the AmigaOne/OS4 community.

All of the above is as best I remember, if I'm wrong, please correct me.

You know MS does push millions of $$$ in R&D for user friendly GUIs etc. and still most people don't get the clue how to use a prog. !

Define "most" and the alternative offerings... It would be a good bet that more people knows about MS Office than any competing office product from the AOS platform.

Quote:

OK here we also do have the millions of useless features each MS prog has.

Factor in other full featured office style suites i.e. Open Office/SUN StarOffice, IBM Lotus Smart Suite and Corel Wordperfect Office.

Microsoft’s Windows Moviemaker 2.0 looks to be less competitive compared to Apple’s solution i.e. less features.

Quote:

But for novices most MS progs and also those of other companies are difficult to use!

Name the alternative.

As Tomazkid and Kicko already pointed out I'm feeling very happy right now.
But it's more like

I've been waiting for the OS4 version, since I bought my AmigaOne.

The GUI is proffesional, and not meant to be flashy, otoh it's free from digging dogs and all such crap.
The GUI also works if you happen to be some distance away from the monitor.
B&P isn't the killer app that will save the Amiga singlehandedly, but it's a very competent recording tool, and I think it's holds it's own very well, even now.

Someone here suggested that it was hard to understand.
I've tried cubase.....

I'm still waiting for B&P

The funny thing is many progs used by professionnals be it audio, video or multimedia or 3D are often set up with a non computer conform GUI.

Factor in MacOS X and it's aqua themed applications (from Apple and third parties).
Modern non-conform GUI usually includes themed control panels i.e. large bitmap control panels which are modelled as real life devices e.g. brush metal finish mixer.

From memory,
1. Raytrace applications that follows Win95/2K style GUI would be 3DSMax, Cinema 4D, RealSoft 3D,
2. NLE applications that follows Win95/2K would be Sony Vegas s 5.0, Ulead Media Studio, Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5.
3. Midi/Audio applications that follows Win95/2K would be Cakewalk Sonar XL.

What’s important is the core feaures to be operational on AOS4.

Btw doesn't anyone know how it stands in comparence to todays most
used software? What's good in B&P and what's lacking?

I'am afraid its not even comparable in anyway with todays standards in musicproduction software. It lacks so many features, like VST-plugins, Software-synths, HD-recording, AISO-drivers and so on. I dont wanna sound pessimistic, but I cant see how any professional musicians will start using this software. It's really 10 years to late.

Probably not competitive enough for charging a premium price tag....

An example of open source midi sequencers can be found from

Great news! Really looking forward to using this on my AOne

Btw, on Alfreds homepage there's a guide on how to make skins for the BnP GUI: Rules for skins

(I'm planning on creating a GUI which looks more like the default OS4-look)

IMHO it should has a gui like audio evolution, probably B&p users are going to use even Audio Evolution and thus they switch between these two programs in many events...a coherency of gui in this case should help to work
